  • The P-40 was a great fighter but because the Army brass at the time of it's development didn't want Allison to develop a two stage two speed supercharger for high altitude use. This was one of the reasons the P-51 got the Merlin.

  • Great post! The P-40 has always been my favorite warbird, but I've got a hometown bias. They were all built here in Buffalo, NY. Incidentally, one of the mammoth Curtiss factories here, where virtually all P-40s were built, was demolished only a few years ago to make way for a runway expansion at BNIA.

  • beauty

  • Great video of an often unappreciated warplane of WWII.

The P40 was a very capable fighter under 14K feet. The only thing holding back this bird was a supercharger such as the one on the Merlin with the Spits or the P51.

  • Even still, it had it's edges over the 51 and spit, It generally preformed better at lower altitudes because of that. A buddy of mine has flown both the P-40 and the Spitfire, and says he loved the 40 because of that.

  • love those P-40s!! 8^)

  • this is awesome
