I'm as big a supporter of Monty as anyone, but the guy as much as I personally want him to be, isn't anywhere near the word "great" yet. The trouble with Monty is variation. He either hasn't learnt, or doesn't put it into practice, the art of variation. Changing speed, not by .5 of a mile or kilometre per hour but with noticeable differences, likewise with his length, or position on the crease. I know Monty's action is very orthodox and doesn't necessarily lend itself to easy variation...

...but these are essential points that an international spinner needs to develop. I'm going to talk about him in a second, and I know his record initially wasn't very good, averaging 40 in ODI's and high 30s in tests but Daniel Vettori worked on all these facets, and is now the number 1 One Day bowler, and one of the most consistent test matches bowlers around. He is truly a great left arm spinner, whose wicket taking record is and will be hampered by a very weak surrounding pace attack.
