  • D.K. is the Man!!!

  • This is terrific- thanks to Dave for sharing this. You know, he gives personal classes in SUP and I can only assume they're pricey, so to make the whole thing available on youtube for free tells me he's cool.

Another good vid to check out is by Nikki Gregg.

  • he's such a convert from snowboarding

  • This is a great video for those of us that want to try but didn't know how to begin.

  • Kalama, you are the be(a)st. I knew you when i was young and you use to sail windsurf. i remenber your jumps, so high. Aloha!

  • I like this vid. I'm a kitesurfer, but when we have no wind, I'm limited to what I can do in the sea. Yes I can try body boarding, or skim-boarding, or just a general swim. Surfing to me looks like too much trouble as you wait, and yes a set comes in.. never guaranteed... or you fall off after a few seconds (this is what's I've seen over here in the uk so far BTW) Paddle boarding looks like a nice relaxing way to have a good non-windy day out in the sea... while still having fun.

  • this is learn as you go, you dont need this idiot to instruct

  • @GREENBINGBONG

Dave Kalama invented tow surfing with Laird Hamilton and is a legendary figure in the sport. "This idiot"? You apparently know dick about surfing.

  • @GREENBINGBONG actually i needed this. ive never done anything on a board in water so i had no idea how to start using my paddle board and this video was reallyy helpful.

  • Where is this lovely bay?

  • Your the best Mr. Kalama. Thank you and please keep charging!

  • Ok, I'm trying to understand this sport. I'm an avid windsurfer and I see these people on the lake. I don't get it, I really don't. It's like doing a board sport with 0 adrenaline. Is this a sport for people that just couldn't cut it surfing/windurfing/kitesurfing? Why would you spend money on this?

  • @inthefuns I think its cool. Just because you "dont get it". Its more peaceful than anything. Almost walking on water. Once you get a bit older youll understand the need for peaceful things mate.

  • Hi @inthefuns, there are three answers to your question; 1) it is a great core workout trying to balance on something moving so slowly, 2) it is something to do when the surf is flat (which is a lot) or too wet to skate, 3) if you learn the basics on a lake you can progress out into the surf – riding swell as well as waves, increasing your water time.

I doubt that anyone uses a SUP instead of another board sport, but rather to complement it when conditions dictate / allow .

  • @sk8rsurf Fair enough... I guess whatever gets you on the water is better than not being on the water. Maybe I'll have to give it a go! Thanks for the response....

  • @inthefuns plus, not all people like the adrenaline you get from actual surfing. some people use it to just relax

  • How to lift a board, how to stand, how to balance...you don't tell people how to do those things.

Seriously everyone, it's almost impossible to lose your balance on one of these things, just do what works for you and if someone better than you sais something else, try it, but don't take their word as law.

Also, it's my personal preference to have a board with a handhold, easy transport and reminds you where you're standing.

  • Would have been nice to have some instruction on how to recover your board and paddle after falling off. Otherwise, nice vid.

  • Perfect !! very very good... tks

  • cool

    you are the best

    tnx ^^

  • cool. thanks!

  • ditto, mahalo!

  • best instructional vid ever!!
