well I've always wondered that myself. They never did any real flashbacks of the teachers as students. Other then the short scene of Stein and Spirit. Though, Azuza did say that Stein was her first love. Maybe

yep. It's quite ironic though. They mention Stein's love life. In the Manga Marie dated BJ. Though it was changed in the anime.
