External mics are always better than internal microphones if you know what you're doing. As a videographer you have to touch your camera and since it's recording to the internal microphone, your audio is going to suffer. Also, there's no debating the higher quality of the NTG-2 to the 5D's internal microphone. Never use the internal mic on the camera.
