i love chickens im 17 and i have 4 about to have 5 i got a blue laying hen called amercada(spelling not to good) a leghorn a road island red and a barred rock and they are over 10 months old net laying eggs but they are my friends not my food i love them.
I'm raising two of those, and I do have a question, when can they star laying eggs age wise? mine were born in February, so I predicted early july, but I'm not certain.
When a chicken lays an egg, will they all hatch into chicks if you let them? or are eggs with chicks the ones where the hen has mated? How long can you wait to collect an egg?
@kd4adv Healthy chickens usually molt in the Fall after their 1st birthday and then every Fall after that. However molting can also be caused by stress, illness or diet irregularities. They usually stop laying while molting, which can last from weeks to months. Also, they lay fewer and fewer eggs as they age. I REALLY suggest you read up on it. There are lots of inexpensive books on the subject, or even just an hour at the public library will tell you all about it. Good luck!
We just started raising chickens...beginning with 6 Rhode Island Red pullets this past summer. Three (or possibly four) of them are laying eggs now. Lotsa fun!
It is not the only State Bird. There's also the Delaware and the New Hampshire. Also, true Rhode Island Reds are not supposed to be small. They were originally created as a large, brick-shaped dual purpose bird with plenty of meat on the bone and still a good egg laying ability.
I had a Rhody. She was the bully of my bird family, but she laid great eggs. I wish she hadn't been so mean to the barred rock hen and the black cornish, but she had an attitude of entitlement and a loud voice. I will not be able to have another in Hollywood because they are so vocal, but I really did love her a lot, and the eggs were the best.
i have 3 RIRs, light brahma rooster, buff orpington, EE, and 2 breeds i dont know. soo what does a brahma and RIR cross look like? cuz he is getting frisky with the hens...
i have 5 purebred Rhode Island Reds and a cock, there brilliant, lovely dark hevey hens with large brown eggs am hatching chicks this year, all of them are show birds
I have two rhode island reds one female and one male my male is really big is that natreaul for rhode islands i also have a chille chicke that lays green eggs.I have 73 some more to and three turkeys
i have a road island red hen and about two weeks ago she lost a tip off one of her toe some how.Now her tail fethers by her but are always wet and dirty looking.any ideas what wrong.she must be sick?

When are the molting periods and what would be the cause if they stopped laying eggs altogether while still living?

i think the shell doesn't matter, but true backyards hens do lay eggs that have a much more orange tinted yolk, and these do taste amazing.

I like crossbreeds better then purebreeds.
It's much more fun when crossbreeds have chicks, 'cuz you never know how the chicks will look :)
With pure breeds, you always know how the chick will look when it's grown up and how it will look when it hatches.
Crossbreeds are so pretty =^__^=

Correct.. the Blue Hen is the one in Delaware. Strangely, not of the breed known as Delawares.
