To me, I thought the film was a character study. Films don't have to have a plot to be a good movie. Just look at most of the Martin Scorsese films. I was definitely entertained by the film, and its not supposed to make you feel happy. It wants you to absorb the positive energy that Sally Hawkins is expressing. Yes, you may be annoyed by her, but that just shows exactly what kind of person you are. A negative person. Her personality is supposed to be so alienatingly positive, you would cringe.
Nothing happens in this movie, quite right. By all means, it should be rubbish, but I found myself wholely engaged in what was going on and how this girl was going about her life.
There is some great acting here, and an engaging story, if not all that interesting.
p.s. Please remind your mother that the person she should be angry is with herself for her inability to comprehend her mother tongue spoken in a slightly different way.

1. You're supposed to be annoyed with Poppy at the beginning.
2. Poppy doesn't behave like a normal person; if she did, there would be no point in making a movie about such a character.
3. You're not supposed to come out from the movie with joy; it's a "sink-in" movie where you only begin to like it later, not just after watching the movie.

When I saw this movie, Poppy annoyed me the shit out of me! I didn't blame the driver for being angry and annoyed because she won't pay attention.

agreed. although i will say, sally hawkins was great...but the film is just not all that critics are making it out to be.
