@J0eFlesh That is true. Don't assume however that Steve's standards for lawn care equate to a curriculum you might desire. You are fortunate that our federal government seems to favor evolution. What if they favored creationism instead? In a diverse nation such as ours, isn't it is best to these leave matters up to local government so that the people decide what is appropriate for their needs? I find creationism to be silly. However, I hate to deny a community the right to choose.

the analogy ignores the fact that private education and home schooling is still available, mowing or treating your lawn yourself. Also, most of the control is currently the state and local regarding education. This is why you heard about different states debating what to teach in their public schools.

So, the Heritage Foundation is absolutely opposed to: No Child Left Behind , Race to the Top, IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), and national standards--all things that conservatives love. Interesting. I thought this was a staunch conservative group.

We have a Federal Education Department for the reasons of 1- National Security- If you educate kids with non-science in a scientific world our nation will fail economically. The long agreed-to history of America/World is being changed by Conservatives. To have a history lesson that is simply wrong (dinosaurs exist with humans or Paul Revere being early NRA proponent) is simply to abuse the children.Leave schools to locals and snake handling will be in schools.FED is oversight for nuttyness.

@boredjoewo Here's a little hope for you. ALL of the founding fathers were home schooled. As well as Abraham Lincoln. Even a homeschooled child won the Scripts Spelling Bee. There are GOVT run schools that have children reading books like Heather HasTwo Mommies. Not to mention Al Gore's Inconvient Truth which has now been proven to be filled with misinformation. Don't even get me started on "The Story of Stuff". That propaganda filled film with anti-capitalist views.
