Communism failed in practise because everything went stagnant... Capitalism is also failing because in order for a Capitalist economy to be successful it must grow and continue to grow... A better way must be found!
That said, we must as individuals learn to be content by making the best of whatever our life's situation happens to be. If there is an afterlife, I doubt that there's any economic system in it :)
communism and capitalism in the end are very often based on lies and "profiting" from other peoples naivety... sad but our world is rotten so we have to make our bits of heaven on this earth !
No offense, but Lola says she likes the new dog better. Ha ha! Me? Either one will do. It's funny, isn't it? People that we're told are miserable in their society often times aren't. Of course, in this case they were ignorant of there being a "better" way. Or at least another way. I'm still glad the wall is gone. People shouldn't be kept ignorant about what's going on in the rest of the world.
actually this friend told me that they had television and were not quite oblivious to western "values" but they mostly noticed the ease of travel compared to theirs...
I remember when the wall came down. Even over here never having been to Germany it seems as if it wasn't true for a few days. People my age had never known of Berlin without the wall, never known of a time without the Soviet Union and certainly never really expected it to end in our lifetimes.
We had a lot of disinformation from our educators on a great many things about the Soviet Union as well but I would say it probably is not the bias many would think.
Such an interesting topic DC. And you had a lovely story to help illustrate a verse in the bible where Paul says he has learned to be content in all things. I think I've told you Philippians is one of my favorite Bible books. So that man's life was gray but he didn't know it. I think simple things are definitely the best. We all think things have to be elaborate or expensive to have value. Hugs DC. It was such a pleasure chatting with you yesterday. You and Helene are just so cute.
Good-bye Lenin is still one of my favourite films and a very touching story of the life of a family in East Germany in the days, before and after, the wall came down.
I used to feel lucky growing up in the UK, but now things have changed and the manipulation and lies that we have to swallow on a daily basis probably far exceed what the East Germans ever had to deal with. Even Switzerland is one big rotten apple hiding under a veneer of rosiness.
oh ou have inspired me to vlog on what it is like living with the east side of the wall 20 years later, i hope i will do it and not bottle out tomorrow
I found your vlog fascinating. I so enjoyed your prospective and ?'s you asked your friend and colleague. I think sometimes we put too much emphasis on other things and maybe need to focus more on simplicity and contentment. We could all learn a lesson here. Thx DC. I'm a chatterbox also! hehehe
my vids are usually quite long since I go on and on since I improvise mostly... funny that I don't remember where I was when the wall came down... changing diapers probably... take care !!!
Hey DC...I so remember when the wall came down. I was 33 and at the time I lived in Hanover Pennsylvania! There is a huge german and dutch population in the area. Many of the villages were named after german towns like...East Berlin and Heidlersburg to name a few. We went to a huge celebration with friends at the Hofbrauhaus in Abbotstown. Our friends were overjoyed...because they were going to see, family and friends...most for the first time now that the wall was down! Continued...
I pretty much wasn't allowed to think for myself either as a child so all sounds familar. You just make the best of it. Sad though about the color which speaks volumes.

You are so right that we need to be more content with what we have and not to be concerned with what we don't.
DearestBecky 2 years ago
contentment is often an act of will since we will always find something that we think that we need...

Vet interesting topic and very well told.
I never thought about what it must have been like, and everything you speak of is so very true.
It is very hard without family and s positive support system around you.
Coming on You tube you can get lucky and meet some positive people.
Thank you for sharing....

I agree that things are usually very different to our perceptions... and sadly mostly in the wrong sense...
