This whole album, "The Mask", is just awesome! It is a rare and hard-to-find album today, features "You're So Remote", and "Hip Level" Some awesome bass work from the Glover, and some of the most interesting and sincere lyrics, by the way! This album is a great piece of art!
Summer of '84. I was 17 years old and thought it was the coolest song ever when I first heard it. I especially liked the prolonged jam at the end of the original version. Wish I could buy it somewhere.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME !!! I wish this had received more airplay back in the day. I remember hearing this once maybe twice on the radio, loving it and then forgetting it because I never heard it again until now - CONGRATULATIONS Mr. Lippman on a GREAT video and RG on a coooool tune !!!!
Thanks for uploading this song! I had the lp like 25 years ago! Please can you upload more of this record? I remember "Getting Stranger", "Fake it". It was an unusual thing back then since Glover has always been into hard rock (Purple, Rainbow and he also produced albums for Nazareth and Judas) but a real good stuff there!
Took me years to figure out who did this song. I used to think the chorus was saying something else. Not sure how I found it, but I am happy I did. Like others, I was shocked to find out it was Roger Glover. Wish he would do more like this.
Just recently bought this on vinyl, after a long search! Love the album! Between being the bassist for Deep Purple for the last 40 years, and putting together the Butterfly Ball, Mask, and producing albums from bands like Pretty Maids....this guy is a major influence on the world of hard rock!
When I was a wee lad, my new neighbor, A. Leesman, who was a young adult and my role model blasted this song a few times one day on his really loud Hi-Fi system. I digged the music and the occasion even though it was not really what I was into at the time. He also introduced me to Alan Parsons Project and Asia.
I met Roger Glover back in 85 backstage on the "Perfect Strangers" tour. I told him I dug the video and he was so happy he grabbed my hand and kissed it. :)
I never knew Glover put out this song. I absolutely LOVE this song, chorus, energy!!! It sounds like something that would have been perfectly suited for Gillan/Glover Accidentally on Purpose
I sound like a broken record for all the other comments, but I kept the lp single of this longer than I could keep a working turntable. I finally had to get rid if the LP, but I hoped one day someone would upload this. Great lyrics, beat, spirit. my quest is over and I can now put the mask on whenever the mood takes me. Thanks!
I remember listening to this on the cassette tape in August 1984 all the way from Massachusetts to check in to my new duty station in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was a great song for the time!
had no idea that this is THE ROGER GLOVER lead bassist of DEEP PURPLE. went searching his name and found out THIS IS HIM. anyhow this is a really fab video but there is so much more to know about him. :)
thanks for creating this brilliant piece of work...I've always liked it and have been looking for it on here...It's a pity MTV didn't give it more play....that time was such a dry period for quality music
This song blew me away the first time I heard it (It was on 'Friday Night Videos'). The vocals in the verses have a very unusual sound, I thought. I never understood why this didn't become a real hit.
Not too long I had done several searches for this Roger Glover song, to no avail until now. EXCELLENT to see it posted!. Somewhere in my aging cassette tapes collection I have it recorded straight from an FM broadcast BACK in the day.
It never ends with the treasures in the Purple family that continue to surface on the internet, in this case thanks to Peter himself, it doesn't get any better than providence from someone actually involved in the making. I've been keeping an eye out for this since Youtube went up.
It's one of my favourites, love the storyline that follows the song, you need to really listen and watch to appreciate the work and talent within this very well done music video.

Today - out of the blue - I started humming The Mask.
Buried for 27 years somewhere in my head.
There it was.

I always loved this song, mostly because of the great melody and Roger´s incredible voice.
But the lyrics absolutely suck big time. "I see my own reflection, but this time, I got the mask" must be one of the worst lines of the decade.

Very Peter Gabriel or Genesis. Not my style of music, but very good ...
