Thanks for this - I think this was shown on another broadcast, just detailing what the goggles Geoff was wearing did to protect his fact. Apparently, when he jerked forward from the impact, his face (protected by goggles, of course) hit the steering wheel.
I couldn't remember at all what year that was, so thanks for posting this... 4 years ago. :)
Geoff Bodine was one of few (and I mean literally few) drivers in Cup who wore full-faced helmets in 1989 (sans visor). The hit he took here smacked his head against the wheel, and probably would have broken every bone in his face if he was wearing an open-faced helmet.
From what I understand, Geoff actually took some grief back then for wearing a full faced helmet. Now days everyone wears one. Geoff also introduced power steering to NASCAR and developed safer seats.
I think the real reason why the "Inner-Loop" chicane besides J.D. McDuffie's fatal crash was Tommy Kendall's near-fatal crash in a IMSA GTP race earlier in the 1991 season where he cut a tire down and hit nearly head-on into the tire wall at roughly 175-180mph while going through the old turn 5, which was one of the fastest turns on any track in the world at the time.
Bodine lost a lot speed/momentum spining around. Had he not, he probably would have been hurt badly. McDuffie slid in straight on with no brakes, and missing a wheel.
well, aside from mcduffie's fatal crash a few years later, theres another reason we have the inter-loop there now. also tommy kendalls crash in the IMSA race around this time as well.

If you watched the 2nd Pocono race in 1990 you found out what happened to Geoff Bodine in this race!!

That spot that Bodine hit is almost exactly the same spot that JD McDuffie hit in 1991... Hence why the "Inner-Loop" was introduced in 1992.

When did another driver take over from Rusty Wallace as driver of a car sponsored by Kodiak?
chrisuncleahmad 3 years ago
Ken Schrader got Kodiak as his sponsor in 1990

The bus stop chicane was added after JD McDuffie's fatal crash in 1991.

Geoff hit that guardrail like Jimmie Johnson hit turn one a few years ago. If you look that wall absorbed a ton of energy.

Those cars looked so awesome sliding up through the Esses on the Bias-ply tires. I miss that.

I wish that buick and olds came back 2 racing. They had more character than the chevys and Pontiacs had.

How the Crap did Geoff Bodine Walk away and JD McDuffie was killed in the same spot?

McDuffies rollcage broke IIRC (Plus he landed upside down)

Plus he landed on his roof.
