I love Joy Division, and of course would listen to something like this 1,000 times before I'd throw on Lady Gaga or Bieber. That said, I don't think it's necessary to slag off on stuff that a lot of people like in order to express an opinion about the artists I think are great. I'm particularly turned off by comments along the lines of "why couldn't (insert pop icon punching bag name here) be taken instead of Ian." I have strong opinions, but they fall short of wanting to see someone die.
@LeLimeLine maybe because it's not really that great a song....personally, i despise it -- from the goofy sounding voice to the cheesy keyboards to the trite melody i am utterly repelled by it and can't see what people see in it.....i even hated this song when my favorite band the swans covered it........about the only thing i like about this song is the words, so thumbs up if u like the words and thumbs down if u hate the words.
@posthumanhero swans murdered this song, and im a swans fan before they turned shit, it was so obviously faked pained emotion like all the fools who have atempted it, what they just dont get is that ian meant it, and it showed, all the others were desperately trying to conjure up this emotion like a fake orgasm ,all other versions are useless.
@posthumanhero You have no musical taste, that however, is not my actual point. My point is that even if you do not like this song, there is no need to be rude about it, that is desperately disrespectful to a very young man who died. I'm not particularly keen on the Beatles, for example, but I would never criticise their music so crudely out of respect that members of the band have died and that there are many people in the world who take a lot of pleasure and assurance from their music.
This is a terrific LIVE version of Love Will Tear Us Apart, by Joy Division, but THIS VIDEO IS NOT the song they are singing and IS NOT Love Will Tear Us Apart delayed...sorry chaps...But both ARE Joy Division...
i hate how you think you know it all when you actually know nothing, this IS joy division playing love will tear us apart LIVE and the video is them also playing love will tear us apart, yes there is a delay but that doesnt mean that its a different video/song, if you knew your band history then youd know that ian curtis only plays the guitar on ONE joy division song.....i'll let you figure that out for yourself, retard
I was born on April 15, 1980. Ian Cutis the lead singer unfortunatlly took his life not long after I was born. This footage must have been right before that time. This song i believe (Correct me if im wrong) was their last major single before the band turned into New Order after the death of Ian Curtis. Ian I believe is in a place that he wanted to go. To bad he wanted to go so soon. R.I.P Ian We All Love You.
It doesnt matter how many times i hear this song (or in fact anything by Joy Division) it reaches a place most other music just cant. I just love them.
one of the best songs in the world my kids hate me being out with them and this song comes on i sing along or dance [daddy style] to it but hey you only live once
Saw them in October 1979 supporting the Buzzcocks at Sheffield. A wonderful experience. I had never heard of them before but went out the next morning and bough "Unknown Pleasures" A great band.
i just want to say, I love Ian Curtis and Joy Division with all of my heart. i wish i had been there to see them live, just once, JUST ONCE. this is a beautiful track, but most of them are.
Shame you don't get to see Morris properly. Obviously the sound isn't the best here, but you can still tell he's giving one hell of a performance on the cans.
I love the original recording of the song, to me it's a flawless piece of music all the way through, so it's some testament to this band that they also make it work very, very well in a more up-tempo version. Thanks for sharing.
coz curtis couldnt play the guitar he holds the one note he plays in the tune right the way through with his fingers . have a look at the video in the rehearsal studio aswell ... never lets go of that note
ian could play the guitar,he played and live i might add on3 songs i think.the rest of the band are on record saying he had a unique way of strumming the guitar, though hedid feet embarrassed playing the guitar
It's interesting the way he turns his back to the audience and moves into the shadows when his guitar parts come on. Maybe he's taking advantage of feedback with the amps but I suspect it is because he doesn't like showing his guitar playing.
Kurt Cobain And Ian Curtis were both great song writer. But you can't compare the two.I myself liked Curtis song writer better and Joy Division songs better.
You don't know what the fuck you are talking about.
I'm just starting to really like Joy Division, I was really interested in Sid's life for a while and I listened to Nirvana for almost a year and I think if you looked into it you wouldn't say shit like that.
Considering where Kurt came from and how far he got (not money or fame-wise).
i don't fucking care about kurt kobain's life or about his background! i just think that he was nothing compared to people like sid vicious or ian curtis that walked the same way 20 years before that folk called kurt cobain...
kobain is right about that. I don't like nirvana. They appear as a cheap north american interpretation of uk punk, however they never came close to it. kobain's nihilism, guitar smashing, anti-conformist actics appear so lame now, such a re-hash.
I remember reading a late 1970's NME and BuzZcock's Pete Shelley (i think) had just scrificed his guitar. Underneath the pic was written something like- but hasn't it all been done before Pete?
Dude it is Cobain not kobain. Just a friendly agrument. You can in my eyes classify nivana and UK punk like the sex pistols. It is two totally different generes. Yea some stuff by nirvana had punk rifts but to comapre it to UK punk is off base. Who cares who recked their guitar first Each did it because they felt like it. Grunge rock had different values than punk rock as well as a different message. Listen to the lyrics you will understand. Again just a friendly opinion
hey uponchristian..I couldnt agree more and you couldnt have said it any better, fall out boys version of this song is the worst cover version ive ever heard of any song and they should be beatn for their trouble, a wuss rock band should never cover a masterpiece of a song by such a great group as joy division, RIP IAN!
no, as far as i know nirvana never covered this song....AND THATS A GOOD THING, theres no other version comparable to jds version, especially fall out boys version...they sucked hard, i dont like the wuss version of this song, jd is the only one ill bother to listen to!
I'd actually love to hear a Nirvana cover of the song, but that's really just because Nirvana means so much to me. Someone said Kurt said this was the most beautiful song he had ever heard
And you will limit yourself thereby. Ian's vocal on Love Will Tear Us Apart is particularly sublime but that does not mean others should not cover the tune. I heard U2 do this song - clearly Bono was a huge JD fan - his timing was impeccable and somehow he added something (not replaced) to the song. I am sure a young, and at the time, anonymous Bono sat in his room and sang along with the record - that history he has with song brings something to it. I don't suspect you'll understand.
I really like u2 but I dont like their version of love willl tear us apart, his voice doesnt suit the song, this song is meant to sound melloncollie and bono sounds too cheerie for the song which the song isnt meANT to sound
covers are covers.....they're not meant to be analyzed in their own. They're meant as a tribute. It doesn't matter how close/far/different/same they are. If you're going to cover a song exactly like it was done originally why bother?
@uponchristian Suppose so, but you have to look at the time, as punks and that were into the good old fashioned British word of wanke and they weren't into stage managed sets.
