Even though I am a Mercedes fan more than I am an Audi fan, I must say that quattro is the best, you can tell that they tried to make Audi seem the worst by fitting the smallest profile tires that you can get on a q5, which are a lot lower profile than the ones on the other two and not testing fairly, shame on BMW.
The difference is center differential. The Q7 has an LSD center diff, it needs wheel speed difference to transfer power back. The other two have electronic locking diffs using ABS systems. In this test Audi looks bad but in real world computers cannot understand everything that happens every second on the slippery stuff. Mechanical diffs for the win.
Who does not know what a clutch on an Audi may even write nothing ... This is not an electronic braking system, a mechanical connection! In harsh environments where electrical fails, Audi will drive by and laugh)
A couple of points I would make. xDrive is an excellant system that has proven itself. The Audi Quattro is extremely effective however and it is obvious this video set up the Quattro for failure, the vehicle was proceeding up the ramp but the driver halted the progress. The xDrive doesn't need that kind of advantage. Both systems work well... both systems will routinely pass my Subaru on a snowpack road unless the snow gets deep. So do you want a BMW or Audi, eiher is a good choice.
p.s. I laugh when I see these japanese are scared to scratch the vehicles so they use plastic wrap to avoid friction contact , I guess these are rented or borrowed vehicles...
I don't see anything wrong with either car, just because they work in different ways doesn't mean one is inferior to the other. After all, all 3 got over the rollers.
I wouldn't trust any of these all wheel drive comparisons ... anytime you set up anything other than 'real' life, the results are subject to manipulation ... it is all about which auto manufacturer paid for the test .. even if it was a backdoor pay off! Take these cars out into the real world on a real winding road, and on real snow and ice ... then do a test .. and don't forget the drives ... they have a lot to do with it as well!
Audi introduced the Quattro in 1980 the rest is history. Audi is a pioneer the rest of the manufacturers just try to get into what works Quattro works up until a few yrs ago BMW nor Mercedes had all wheel drive in they're cars.
Looks like you never drove and Audi. The Quattro might be old but it works why change something that works. It can always be duplicated but never imitated. All other car manufactures have jumped on the band wagon for awd Lexus, Infinity etc.
This video it total crap. Why does the driver of the Q5 stop giving it gas when it actually starts to go up the rollers? One also has to think that the Q5 runs a EDL rear diff and as Audi describes as "Self-locking differential providing automatic and variable front to rear power proportioning", not a Torsen diff. BMW tries really hard to try and discredit Quattro, but I guess when your on top, everyone is after you!! Its always best to stick with the original, Audi!!
@fnjeep314 quattro is the best between the germans but I would say the new jeep Quadra-drive 2 system with quadra-lift beats all 3 @ this point. The new grand cherokee is unstoppable. ( yes I realise it is ML-class based chassis but the drive system is still GM / JEEP )
@fnjeep314 He keeps stopping to demonstraight how effective and fast the power transfer is from the front to the rear wheels. I don't see the problem.
@LukiXS2 The quattro system delivers the engine power equally to all wheels, but lets say 1 wheel looses traction, what happens then?Well it multiplies the torque from the wheels that r spinning and send it to the others, but when the car is on rollers there is no torque 0*3=0 Meaning the car wont be able to deliver any power to any wheel while that single 1 is spinning
This system works just fine when the ESP is turned on,because it stops the spinning wheel so that the power can go to the other 3
Audi uses the Torsen center differential. This is a pure mechanical, friction based self locking diff. It has a torque bias ratio of 3:1. This means, it is able to send 75% of the power to the axle that has better traction. It's also faster than any electronic controlled system. But: It always needs a little torque, to lock properly because its mechanical. No torque = No friction = No lock!
This test on rollers is pretty stupid and doesn't show reality.
You said: "the quattro system gives ALL the power to the wheels that ARE spinning, meaning the car wont move."
Which is wrong in my opinion. It only sends the power to the wheels that are spinnig if they have no traction at all. If there's little traction which results in torque in the drivetrain, the torsen will lock and send the power to the wheels that are NOT spinning.
But: Stupid roller tests like this don't say much anyway...
@NarishmaJr So it's not wrong to say that the Quattro AWD system has less stuff to go wrong and is faster than nearly any other AWD system. It just has the disadvantage which you can see in this video.
If the driver knew how to drive a quattro, he would push the brakes slightly and off he goes! By applying brakes slightly, the torsen would lock.
@NarishmaJr Todays cars of this class are all very similar anyways I think. So everyone should drive what he likes. I currently drive a very old Audi and it's the best, most reliable car I've driven until now. My next one will be an Audi too I think. Not because I think they are way better than others but just because I like them ;)
Well... Why don't you just buy a Subaru? They are very good cars too.
All crossovers are rubbish if you ask me. If you want four wheel drive get a proper 4x4 and some accessories for what they overcharge for one of these.
the audi didn't even have the ground clearance to get on the ramp. their all rear based awd / 4wd and with enough gas I'm sure they would make it up the ramp
guys thus is just a clip to criticize quattro. They used a roller to make one side of the wheel's traction to become a zero to give a slip and made other wheel need a lot of torque like when the car is in the slope at the same time. In the case like this, awd couldn't get out of this situation like the video. But this situation couldn't be made on the real road because even icy roads have a traction. This video is just to criticize audi. 4matic, x drive never could beat quattro on the off road

even though I'm a happy posessor of an x3, this video is a trick. quattro doesn't react as quickly as xdrive, and it takes more seconds to work... you stopped the q5 right when quattro came in action and you can see it because the q5 started climbing

We done a test similar to this one - it really works!!!
The BMW xDrive-System is in comparing to the 4-Matic or Quattro system completly elektric which makes is react much faster. The other positive thing about the xDrive is that the power can autimaticly go up to 100 % to the front or the rear axle. 4-Matic and Quattro only up to 80 % to each axle.
4-Matic and Quattro is not bad but not as good as xDrive.
Sorry for my bad english, I'm from Germany, just like the cars.

Sorry to disappoint you.
