  • I think the reference to Carl never missing a note was perhaps to his vocals. Yeah The Ed Sullivan guitar intro was pretty bad........ he was 14 give him a break

  • I'd see so much Green Day doing that :O

  • I was expecting Bon Jovi haha

  • i like the beach boys but......that was embarissingly bad

  • All the folks having their "Aww Brian is cute" thoughts are as disturbing and creepy as Brian was from about 1970-1989. I wonder if his kids thought Bri's smack/coke/booze abuse and wacked out behavior was cute when they were growing up. I also question some of your alleged love of Brian. An obese, unhygeinic Brian spazzing out in public is sad. The guy used to be a functioning adult on top of the world, and fried himself through drugs and neurosis. I don't buy the schizo excuse either.

  • @peterp21 I am sure not a day goes by when Brian's mis-spent years don't bother him, which makes it all the more important for him now to grab every day and squeeze the most out of it, creatively, which he seems to if his media profile is anything like accurate, condemning people for their addictions and addctive natures is like condemning breathing for making imperfect lives too long, and prolonging imperfection. True forgiveness comes with reparation,Brian does that every day as an artist.

  • @peterp21 go away.

  • Al loved this song he still sings it in his solo shows

  • Even though it's a shitty live recording, it still demonstrates pretty good vocals by the group. Dennis was just 6 months from dying, but could still smack the drums.

  • Why do this song? They are really, really bad. Someone should have told them.

  • Dennis looks terrible, though he at least shaved off the beard and long hair at this point. The bloating from alcohol is very obvious. If he hadn't drowned, it was only a matter of time until he dropped dead.

  • are these guy's in the stanley cup playoff's ?

  • It's had to believe that by Dec 0f that year , 1983, probably less than 4 months from this video, drummer Dennis Wilson would die 'way too young' . Its too bad that Bruce Johnston's after song 'praise' didnt include Dennis' drumming as well, in addition to Carl Wilson and Al Jardine's Singing on "Runaway". That indicates under appreciation and band friction, ...Of Course, who is to say ..that a little credit goes along way,,, toward self respect ..and staying the course.

  • @gjmaztr7 LOL, right. If only Bruce had thanked Dennis, he wouldn't have died ACCIDENTALLY. That's the "Wilsons are gods, the rest are assholes" contingent for you...nothing is ever the Wilsons' faults. And "stay the course"? When was Dennis ever ON the course? He was a degenerate alchololic, smack/coke abuser, and womanizer. He was also unreliable and simply didn't bother to show up in working condition/at all on tour. Maybe "under-appreciation" was in order?

  • @peterp21: The self righteous troll strikes again. You go from site to site spreading negativity. Go back to your Sunday School, dude.

  • @gjmaztr7 I watched other clips from this show. The second drummer had to fix tempo problems multiple times so clearly Dennis Wilson was struggling quite a bit during this concert. When that is the case, sometimes it is best to play through as a group and draw attention away from the problems.

  • Brian likes this song.

  • nice falsetto by Al

  • Funny, hardly a shot of the much-villified mike love...

  • @carmichael2411 that's a good thing.

  • hey....., it's brian wilson and his back-up singers.........phil spextor

  • The Beach Boys are the best group in American music history.

Their music will be loved for generations to come.

    Even longer than that.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Al looks kinda like del shannon anyway

  • @gittahfiend ha! indeed!

  • when I watch these videos, the ones from 1983 I almost cry seeing Dennis in the shape he is. I still watch them though, and I thank you for posting them. I saw them at the ohio state fair in 1982, and again in 1986. the show in 82 imho was the better of the two cause Dennis was there.

  • Thanks for posting this, it was fun to watch.

  • crazy seeing this. this was not only my first beach boy concert but also my first M's game when I was 3 years old.

  • its so sad, i mean i love seeing brian wilson happy, but it's for the wrong reasons though :(

  • What a brilliant cover version of Runaway. Is it available on any of their albums? I can't seem to find it.

  • Wow...this is a classic. Bri is obviously toasted but having a good time. Dennis would die only months later......

  • Brian as we all know and love him.

  • @Helen25243 there's something about that big body moving to the music that makes me SMiLE

  • Great seeing Brian so animated.

  • if dennis hadn't shaved he wouldn't have looked as bad, even though it was obvious. sometimes I think even if he had gotten clean, he wouldn't have been in the world much longer. SRV a fine example he got clean then bam! died in a helicopter crash. life is full of irony.

  • Ed Carter is lookin at Brian like this guy is nuts, and Dennis looks like he is about to barf all over the drum set....on the video of the same concert, Carl's whatcha do to me MIke Love gives somebody the finger.

  • Kick ass clip, thanks for this!

  • It would have been funny if Brian really went coco and started beating himself up on stage!

  • this is from the beginning of brian's second series of tretments by landy, actually. poor dennis looks like he's on his last leg here, but trying.

  • @bobbycormier I believe that's the year he died. He did look pretty different in his latter years.

  • Brian looks like a mental patient out on a day pass....

  • ...which is pretty much what he was at the time.

  • he was, Bless his heart. The man was really trying

  • @tristianity4u He was at that time.

  • Thanks.

The WHO were at one time or another were going to fire Keith Moon due to his drunken passing out antics.

  • It's obvious. The BB were so tired of his horrible drumming and being drunk that they hired another guy {Bobby Figueroato I do believe} to sit right on stage and play with him.... and BB songs aren't all that tough to play on.

Plus, many times they threatened to fire Dennis.

  • They obviously COULDN'T afford to fire Denny. When they did look what happened. He died a few months later and what was left of the Beach Boys as the great band they were died with him. Poor Carl was the only real Beach Boy left and he was fighting a losing battle while Brian was being Landified.

  • The Beach Boys weren't the same after Dennis died but Carl was not the "only real Beach Boy left." Alan Jardine was an original members as was Mike Love and Brian WIlson (though his participation was sporadic). Bruce Johnston was a member since 1965.

    {Click BB45s for rare Beach Boys video archives}

  • @BB45s I meant Carl was the only one carrying on in the true spirit of the Beach Boys & Brian's musical vision. Therefore he was the only one in the band at that time, imho, who was keeping the Beach Boys name/good reputation alive. I'm very aware Al (who I like very much) and Mike were original members, but @ that time Al was sided in the Mike faction (opposing Carl & Denny) which was exploiting the BBs reputation & doing their best to ruin the legacy of great music 4 the sake of making a buck

  • Dennis Wilson could still out drum you and he 125 fathoms under the sea, dumbass.

  • Thanks for your comment jackass. Seems like you know piss all.

  • He never really tried to be a 'drummer". He was a "clubber" ( and a damn good one) and the 'sex symbol"

  • i like the cover verry much.

    brian likes this song.

  • Terrible..but you can't sound great or look cool with every thing you do.

  • Aw I love this, how cool! Thank you:)

I love you BEACH BOYS!! May you rest in peace Denny & Carl, we miss yoU!

  • This si the year that Denny drowned.

  • thanks a lot, lost this one. Good to see it again.

  • This is just fantastic, thank you for posting! Brian looks like he's really enjoying himself. He & Al aren't really the right heights to share a microphone haha!

  • haah , Al is really short too.

  • He looks even shorter next to Brian, who's at least 6'2".

  • yes! but i've always like Al, and his odd expressions in just about all the photos the beach boys have ever taken:)

  • ....and Al was always the most consistent singer through the years.

  • Al was/is good. but CARL never missed note

  • On records you're right ,LIVE carl sometimes gave a lax performance.I've got video evidence.

  • Yes, actually none of them were perfect. Carl and Al were the best in person for me personally.Dennis was not the only one who drank. check out one of the Australian performances where Carl wa smashed. I heard bad and great notes from them all, which is why my favorite sound from them is as a group in harmony warts and all LOL

    They were human

  • so true:)

  • @BeachBoysGuy1...... im a huge beach boys fan..so i put there greatest hits on my mp3 . to work out at the gym...as yu do... we...ll ....it turned out to be one of those shite throwaway live!! cd,s...it was just crap..live.......i fell off the damn machine...i stik to studio hits now...

  • @BeachBoysGuy1 Of course no band is perfect either. I wish Carl and Dennis were alive today....though if they were their ears would be bleeding from listening to all the new crap they make now a days

  • BBG1...errr, Melbourne Australia 1977..

Maybe, I guess Carl's "notes" were lost in transit. Truth is, none are greater than another. They all contributed to THE greatest vocal group of all times, no do wop nor jazz singers gave us such wonderful sounds.

  • @BeachBoysGuy1 Sure he did. Carl did not sound very good in 77 and 78. Due to chemical dependency issues, sure, but still - there are some "ouch" recordings out there.

Regardless, no need to discredit Al.

  • @BeachBoysGuy1 Carl never missed a note? Are you kidding me? You obviously haven't seen the Beach Boys' performance of "Wendy" on the Ed Sullivan Show...

  • @mikedrawls41 oh come on! the kid was only 16 at the time!!!

  • Thanks this is AWESOME!!!!!!!! AL sounds so good when he sings Runaway!! Please check out of my channel for some cool Beach Boys stuff
