we all know the lead guy is not guilty so you shouldnt take offense to my comments. Question is, did you suck some wheel later on up the road for your "troubles"??
@wwarrington Yes I should take offence, did I overreact? Maybe. By taking offence clearly I am admitting drafing further up the field, obviously. No smoke without fire and all that.
I loved having to cross the yellow line to get past these pricks, which is a DQ offence. I also loved the guy on my back wheel from mile 90 to mile 111.
My bib no was 771 - cause of the drafting was sheer beligerence of the people on the course.
i passed this guy with the camera as this SECOND huge peleton passed us all. i wanted to give everything I had and sprint up there and tell all you cheating FUCKS exactly what you are. But I didnt have it in me. I hope more people will post vids of this bullshit. Drafting rules are very simple, sometimes frustrating because of the sheer number of people, but nevertheless still apply.
YOU KNOW WHO U ARE AND U SHOULD COMPLETELY DISCOUNT YOUR TIME AND VOW TO NEVER FOLLOW THE LEADER AGAIN!
Great work my man Unfortunatly it only highlights the a small volume drafting that went on, it was a joke this year. One question to all that drafted on the bike leg or "missed out" the first bouy on the second leg of the swim. How the hell can you say you have completed an individual event when you cheated??? #524 and The tall lady form the windy city who rides a cervelo P2.....
By the way, it was the case in Roth 2009 regarding the top 10 to 3. Theoretically the 3rd place was between Norman Stadler and Patrick Vernay. So, if the top 10 is not impacted (maybe only in this case?) regarding the most important rule on Ironman, how it can work with the rest of the athletes!? It only works in Hawaii? Well, WTC can be very worry about The Spirit.
I am more afraid to be out on the course with this guy than the drafters...he's worried about shooting video, he has one hand up with a camera...Jesus leave all the "sh*&" home and come out and race and let the officials do their job. If you want to volunteer as an official you have the job, just don't ride with me anymore pulling this stuff...you are distracted, look at the video competitors are distracted...everyone knock off the bull and RACE!
You're probably so irate because your in the video. What this guy did was awesome. Riding one handed is not big deal. What do you think happens when you take a drink? The pack crossed the center line, THAT's dangerous.
This is video going in to an aid station that you can see up the road, look at the port a potties on the right at the end. This dude is riding one handed as people are setting up for an aid station and getting bunched up as they slow. Yes there was drafting but this video is not of it and in my opinion is intentionally deceiving.
BS.. watch the video watch the other with the 2 cameras.
I had helmet cam an the handheld. The aid station came almost a minute into the video. The rear shot shows them coming from far away. Then I put the camera away well before the aid station.. NICE TRY but your WRONG!!!
What is this, the Tour de France? Wait, It's an Ironman!!! I thought there were drafting rules. A real penalty needs to be put into place, like an extra 5k run for people who do this -- not more rest like it currently is.
3 times (always a few minutes after a marshal passed by a group like this came flying by me in a tight pack. The third one was just in time to get hit by another race marshall and he was giving out red cards like it was christmas. It was nice to see that bunch at least getting a breather at the next penalty tent. Of course, 30 mins later, most of the same bunch pacelined by again, sigh.
Cool video. Sorry, sometimes its hard to pull ahead or slow down and let someone pass but you can do it. You can tell what a difference drafting makes by looking at the guys not pedaling but staying up to speed.
There are always parts on a course where you bunch up. But it definitely appears that these guys are riding as a pack, and it appears that a few are trying to form or are in a pace line. These guys should all have had a 4 minute penalty, at least. Problem is they all would have left the sin bin together and started this madness all over again. On really flat courses there needs to be more USAT officials! I don't think wave starts or Time Trial Starts would have avoided this.
The greatest sin here......compression socks on the bike!!
I love the way that the guys are on carbon bikes with deep dish or disc using those effin' socks, aero helmets and are... sitting up. Doh! Only penalty is to do Ironman Lanzarote on a really windy day.
Et voila a quoi va ressembler les ironmans dans quelques années grace a toutes ces trapenelles qui n'ont iren compris et qui vont aller pavaner avec leurs chronos sous les 5h.........
OK OK.. you should avoid drafting... but how could you that with so many riders and just one road lane? Do I stop pedaling until... until when? I don't think is all their foult.. really
Hey there all -- as a total n00b Triathlete (experienced marathoner), I'm curious about the video -- can you translate what/where some of the violations are, or better yet, what I, as a n00b, should be looking for?
I'm planning on doing mostly Sprints, some Olys, working to a 70.3s, and I ab-so-effing-lutely want to not commit any violations, intentional or otherwise.
I'm the guy at the head of that pelaton, I'd just worked my cock off to get past all those bikes and you see them all lining up behind me to draft. This was one of 3 huge pelatons I had to get past. Draft marshals did jack fucking shit about it.
IMF is the real problem. How you do outride a mile-long paceline? CdA didn't have this problem because the course is so hilly the field gets pretty broken up, but there are courses where avoiding a draft extremely challenging. Still those riders should be ashamed of themselves.
How on Earth would you "set[ing] up the course so its not possible"? That is impossible. The only thing you can do is have more officiating and that STILL wouldn't catch even half of it.
You can set it up so it's certainly more difficult t draft: (a) TIme trial start (they do it at IM Lou, so possible) on flat courses or (b) Wave starts; (c) more marshalls; (d) as noted by someone on ST, forget the time penalty. Have a "penalty loop" out of T2 where drafters run 1 extra mile out-and-back to T2 for 1st offense and 3 miles for 2nd offense. That alone would make most folks think hard about drafting.
Possibly a TT start would help. Wave starts do not prevent drafting at all. In NYC this year (wave starts) it was horrible. This came with the added bonus of creating enormous traffic problems because the slower people went first after the pro's.
A "penalty loop" would definitely do something to deter drafting, but it is so incredibly unfair. 112 miles is 112 miles, period. Time penalties make sense, adding distance is wrong.
More marshals would work, or simply more strategic use of marshals.
this is by far my favorite video on youtube...its so funny to see the drafting and nothing being done about it. o well prolly a fun race

This is outrageous but i can assure you this goes on a lot on many courses! A lack of integrity and basically cheating!
