This song was composed by becker with the help of the communication system based on eye movements (invented by his father), it is performed by Joe Satriani though. It's amazing that Becker can compose this amazing piece of art being completely crippled...
Jason Becker made some awesome music. This song is on collections, composed by Jason, played by friends. You can hear the indian style intro from Joe Satriani, after the breakdown you hear Michael Lee Firkins (dobro and guitar) and Dave Lopez (guitar) play... THIS DESCRIPTION WAS MADE BY THE PAGE OF JASON BECKER ON FACEOOK
lots of arguing over if its Satch or Vai playing the first part. Personally I think its Vai but I mean why doesn't someone just check out the song credits somewhere. Besides regardless of the player, Jason composed that intro bit anyways so really its just being played as Jason wanted it to be played. Its more likely Satch did more work on the River of Longing track along with Marty Friedman and Vai got that piece at the start of this track.
@TheFarriesmetalhead you either listen to too much vai or not enough satch. their playing styles are similar in some ways but they are distinctly different. vai plays on the river of longing reprise.
that weird pitch in 1:59-2:09 almost like a flute noice is acually a chinese guy that can sing 3 pitches. I forgot his name but he sang in some parts for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones on one of their DVDs
You should drop by and tell him hello, I am sure he would appreciate it. :) He even commented on my music and said he liked it, which is an OUT OF THIS WORLD HONOR.
@jumpmasterboyo I think you're probably right, seeing as becker has ALS and i remember reading somewhere that Vai helped perform some of beckers ideas.
Becker doesn't produce anything, he's pure composer now. It would be pretty unreasonable to ask him to do anything so administrative, considering his disease. They probably used Bemesderfer for the new recordings.
Like HawaiiStorm18 said JB has a genre of his own although he used to be a HM guitar player or a sort of "neo-classical" HM player and composer if you wish. This particular piece however represents timeless music in a way.
sounds like Age of mythology music :D

The beginning is in Lydian mode, that's why you think it's Vai/Satriani style, but I don't know who recorded it.

This is orchestral, this sounds much like video game music. Check out Eminence Orchestra Metal Gear Solid, it sounds similar.

It's been called meditation music, but i don't think Jason writes with a genre in mind. Progressive meditation music is what I'd call it.
