i have lab/pit mix 8months well he should be pretty big but hes half the size he should be and i love all dogs so i dont care about how hes a pit bull i forgot he was a pitbull for quite a while he is very lovin and caring
I love the tender heartedness of pit bulls. I've raised (not bred, just rescued) pit bulls for several decades and now they work as my service dogs, but mine are so gentle with me, with children, and with smaller animals. My pitties have been bitten, usually by smaller dogs who come sneaking up behind them, but sometimes by larger dogs - so far, never by another pit bull, and they have never retaliated. As I raise mine, I teach them "loves" and reward gentleness & that's the way they live.
Hey there kikopup, I do not really understand how to use the clicker. I thought the "click" sound should come exactly when they do a command. Like when they "sit," immediately as their buttocks are reaching the floor, you click. Isn't it?
But what I see Jessica did was like the "click" sound means "okay you can get up now good girl." She asked Harley to "take a bow" and waits for a second then "click" and harley gets up.
It truly has nothing to do with the breed, Though when you bring up statistics pitbulls scored an 85% on temperment while breeds such as, Border Collies (80%), Golden Retrievers (84%), and even Lassie "Collie" (78%). It's always the handlers fault. When I first brought my border collie home, he has horrible food aggression problems. I took the time to research the best way to handle it. Now anyone can come up and take his food from him. Though I don't advise it. Always set the dog up for success
treats- well I used to use meat a lot with my dogs- smelly meat, but can you believe it my dogs got bored of that for now, my dogs are into Kibble and bread at the moment... cheese, soft treats, smelly meat are always pretty good! Remember to keep changing what treats you use because they get bored of the same thing.
Great great video. I was just debating my old roommates on this. One of them insisted that my dog will be 'naturally vicious" which of course I disagreed with. My dog is a rotti-pit mix and is extra sweet to everyone.
great video! but how come my pit (blue nose) barks at people while i am walking him and people who visit my house? i don't treat him bad, i give him lots of love, he has any and everything a dog can ask for, i walk him everyday but i don't seem to understand why bark at people? does it have to do with the energy people carry around them? because i heard that dogs can sense that. thanks
Dogs bark to communicate, nothing wrong with that, in fact dogs that communicate are very safe, my dog also will bark if a stranger suddenly appears out of nowhere in the darkness. The dog is telling you he is anxious about strangers, so what you need to do is change his emotional response with counter conditioning- he sees the scary thing, but you give him something amazingly good just after, neurons in the brain change, and the dog starts to unconsciously change his emotional response.
This vid is great! I have a dog who's apparently Staffie, but he looks like a pitbull, completely. He's never bitten and he's only shown the minor signs of agression towards a younger kid who was screaming near him (basically the slow tail wagging, staring, etc.) which is really my fault for not desensitizing him as a pup "/ It's how they're brought up, not the breed!
Great videos... Very informative. I agree totallly about not being a breed issue but more a way of rasing and treating the dogs. Unfortunately still in this day and age many dogs are chained all day and not treated with any respect or decency. There is a lot of work for us who want to educate the masses. After all only through education can things improve.
Great information. My local rescue group is planning a bite education/responsible pet care presentation for elementary students. The NCRC link was very helpful and corrected some outdated paperwork I had. If you know of any good childrens links please include in your next video.
It not the all about the breeds its all about the way the dog is raised and it is awful that people do not research when they have pets most of all dogs cause they can find that they have a wonderful 4 legged friend that will do anything for them...Great Vid!!...and I have a female dog named Harley too she is a mixed breed!! when I tell people her name they of course think she is a male :P
Wow I really liked this vid!! Pitbulls have always been one of my favorite breeds. Sadly my dad won't let me own one. I keep trying to explain that they are wonderful and were more known as nanny dogs then biters back before all the media crap. Oh well. I'll just have to get one when I finish school and I'm out of the house. A pit would be a wonderful play mate for my crazy hyper dobie!!
Perfect blend of info, entertainment & humor! I cracked up when Jessica talked about patting down her dog for any "lock jaws." This has inspired me to do more clicker training with my pit mix, Shelby. I love her dearly for being so brilliant and challenging me to be more creative as a trainer. Thanks for the great ideas!
Emily!!!!!! I feel like we haven't talked in forever!!! How are you?!? Busy I see! :) Wow, she is BEAUTIFUL. Gorgeous Pit... An incredible breed hands down. Miss talking to yuh! Message me sometime!
Great job, Emily and Jessica. As you know, I'm a herding breed person, but the few pitties I've been around have been dolls. Sadly, they are often on the news out here in Miami (where the breed has been banned) for all the wrong reasons.
Thanks! Yes, people need to know they need to 'pittie-proof" their house if they are thinking of adopting one (not leave any breakable items at tail height)
This was great! Thank you Emily for getting Jessica to discuss the myths about Pitbulls and for showing us some wonderful tricks. My cousin has a 2 year old Pitbull called Knuckles and she can't even take him for a walk without having people staring at them. He's such a smart and amazing dog. I wish people could just ignore what they hear in the media and realise that any dog is a good dog if trained and socialized correctly. xox
This is such a great segment of Dogmantics. You and your friend deserve a kudos for standing up for Pitbulls and informing how SWEET they actually are! It's a sin that they're usually the choice dogs of highly irresponsible pet owners and they are looked at as property and not family.
Thanks for making this vid, pitties are an amazing breed, and I would love to have one if they weren't banned here :( People these days hear everything about pitties from the media and don't even think to separate truth from myth.
What Jessica said about terriers was just SO true!! Terriers can go from being completely normal to being completely out of control, "crazy," and not in control of their impulses, so with any terrier, a necessary part of training should be teaching the dog to relax.
I think Pitties are such sweetie-pies! They are beautiful, smart, gentle, loving, and easy to train. Yes, kind of like a Lab. If I wasn't so smitten with BC's, I'd absolutely add one to my life. Funny about the sighing, Mi and I have the same sigh, and I am unsure who is copying who. Great subject for a Dogmantics episode, thanks Em, and thanks Jessica.
I'm so glad that there are more people out there who are for the clearing of the pit bull name. They happen to be one of my favorite breeds and it sucks that so many people still thing negatively about them!
great stuff! I really warmed to Jessica, she was great! I think this is a cool way to use clicker training because if breeds that people have fears of can do cute behaviours and tricks it's a great ice breaker for people that are scared. It makes them more cute and less intimidating. I loved the wagging tail all the way through! haha!
This was wonderful, a big THANKS to you Emily, and especially to your friend and her beautiful Pitbull for telling us more about these great dogs. :)
While watching that Pitbull do the tricks, I was looking at the big panting smile, and just looking at that face fills me with joy and realization at how wonderful these dogs really are when they're living with caring and loving owners. They actually make me think of Labradors a lot, haha. Just big happy goofs. :)
Nice Video Emily! I also LOVE your SD CANINE FREESTYLERS T-Shirt! :) I would love to take one of her seminars to learn more about the pitbull breed! My Border collie also needs to know how to relax, oh yes, but you already know that. :)

a book that would be a perfect 'how to' on this would be Scardey Dog By Ali Brown, its thin and full of pics.
Sometimes its genetics and sometimes its the fact that a dog didnt see enough people before they turned 12 weeks old...
