most people don't know this but this song was chosen by Kubrick because it was originally written about the Horrors of the Holocaust. at the time Stanley was very interested in the holocaust.
Does anyone know where I can find the version of this where Jack is in room 237? It's the same thing, but it has this high pitched noise and a sort of heartbeat sound also.
half past 11 at night. listening to this with earphones with the sure conviction that someone in the corner of my eye is watching me, yet i know im all alone in the house...
I LOVE HOW THE TWINS TELL DAN THEY WANT HIM TO STAY AND PLAY FOREVER AND EVER....WHICH HE CLEARLY DOES'NT WANT TO DO...AND THEN LATER ON...(the true genius of the story)....JACK TELLS HIM HE LOVES THE HOTEL AND WANTS TO STAY THERE FOR EVER AND EVER...this is a key moment in the film...and lets you know once and for all where Jack's alliances lie...
Jakob is a demon of Hell catalogued among many others in "The Lesser Key of Solomon". Evokable and terrible, as demons are, it would be most unwise to 'awaken' him. Most unwise.
the original Penderecki piece of music this basically came from is called 'The Dream Of Jacob', a total nightmarish vision of a score, amazing, and loved that it was reworked so little when included in the Shining ...
The only thing I wish was on this soundtrack was the "heartbeating" sound that gave it more intensity and feel. Is there a version of that one out anywhere?
@datasurferable Jacob is in fact one of the characters in Penderecki's opera "The devils of Loudun" which depicts a 17th century convent, St Ursula, of possesed nuns and the Inquisition trial that followed. Exorcism, dreadful visions, torture are mixed together. Jacob is in fact having macabre visions and he doesn't know if he is dreaming (thus the title)
Genesis 28:16-17 And Jacob awakened from his sleep, and he said, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not." And he was afraid, and said, "How dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of Heaven."
@Iasamei "The asshole Stanley Kubrick"? I hope you're joking. If not, you have no idea what you're talking about. Every track that I posted was included in the film. The only soundtrack that was cut out was the original score composed by Wendy Carlos. For future reference, think before you post a non-sensical, ignorant comment.

the score was written by wendy yes however if you read, stanley cut MOST of that music out like i said before. i read it on imdb.com (a VERY reliable website unlike wikipedia). thats all i was getting at...and yes stanley was an asshole. read some stuff about him you will see what i mean
@Iasamei I know all about Stanley Kubrick. Not only have I seen all of his films, i've read various books and seen numerous documentaries about him including "Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures". I can understand why you would think that, but I personally wouldn't use that word to describe him. I would use words like "enigmatic" or "eccentric" or "non-conformist" or better yet "genius". He was a very misunderstood man. Then again, I am obviously biased.
@Iasamei the wendy carlos score is NOT the music you're listening to. the music, of which you say is the best part of the shining, was chosen by kubrick IN PLACE of the wendy carlos stuff which isn't nearly as good as this, the music actually used in the final cut---THAT YOU LIKE.
in other words, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, and are in the end ridiculing kubrick for making a decision of which you, seemingly unaware, agree with--to use this music instead
@datasurferable If you're referring to the score composed by Alex North for 2001, Kubrick never actually intended to use any of it in the finished film but let Alex compose it anyway in order to ease the pressure from the studio executives.
@Iasamei Just thought I should tell you, but imdb isn't all as reliable as you make it out to be. Slightly more reliable than wikipedia, but not by much.
@PianoMan53100 that's also why the track is called Polymorphia, the woman in the tub changes her appearance like the witches in Penderecki's opera "the devils of Loudun" (where this track is taken from). I have to admit it fits perfectly.
@filmgeek22 Yes, I've noticed that too. Both films actually use Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta (also uploaded here). There are also similar moments in the films, like when Danny sees the two girls in the hallway and they play a bunch of spiraling horns - very similar music is played in Aliens (Cameron's from 1984, not Scott's from 1979) at certain points. Not sure if that particular sound is anywhere present in Alien, but definitely in Aliens. I used to wonder who else noticed that!
This is when the ball runs into Danny's truck. And he is guided into 237. Best part, especially when he's walking almost clumsily and loopy towards his parents, with his thumb glued to the roof of his mouth.
I think they used this in Aliens, yes?

This doesn't sound like the one in the movie - or the official soundtrack for that matter. Probably a different arrangement.

I didn't want to have to say it again, but since people don't listen it bears repeating:
Genesis 28:16 And Jacob awakened from his sleep, and he said, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not."
Genesis 28:17 And he was afraid, and said, "How dreadful is this place! This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of Heaven."

@Kubrickfan27 i can see both of your sides to that.
He was yes a genius and i love all his movies... cept Clockwork Orange, i think that was him...
anyway, he did yell and scream and degrade the actress who played Wendy to get her to become so emotional for the camera
sometimes you gotta be an asshole to get some REALLY good acting outta people
so yes he was an asshole, probably one of the best directors of all times, but an asshole
