Unfortunately, yes. For the most part, society wants us to care about animal rights in order to forget about our fellow man. That's a big part of why things are the way they are now.
Animals are more innocent, they don't see things the way we do, they're more naive and trusting than humans, that's why it's worse when they are mistreated because they don't see it coming or understand why it's happening.
Sure, the dog might be more of a victim than a person, but I feel our society is going downhill real fast if people are more apt to show sympathy for pets than poor people.

In the book Bateman doesn't kill many bums because he feels killing them is no sport, and that "nothing has been lost". He does however enjoy killing Paul Allen and shallow models, who he despised a lot more.

Great acting from a pretty memorable film.
What disturbs me more than Bale's character though is the comments here that show people have so much sympathy and sorrow for a friggin' dog (as sad and cruel as it is), and nothing but apathy at best, and joy at worst when a fellow human down on his luck is brutally murdered for no reason other than being homeless.
Are you people so disconnected from society, that you feel you have more in common with a pet than a human of a lower social status?

Unfortunately, yes. For the most part, society wants us to care about animal rights in order to forget about our fellow man. That's a big part of why things are the way they are now.

Animals are more innocent, they don't see things the way we do, they're more naive and trusting than humans, that's why it's worse when they are mistreated because they don't see it coming or understand why it's happening.

@IneptTroopr It actually always disturbs me more to see an animal killed like a human, but this has nothing to do with being disconnected form society. An animal is of an natural innocence a human can never reach. An animal is complete trustful and not expecting violence, just like a newborn. Abusing an animal or a child is by far the most coward act a human can commit. That an animals life counts less than a human life is only based on the arrogance of humans. We´re not "higher" beings.

@T97Frida Without humanity (or some other form of sentience), abstract concepts such as innocence or arrogance would have no meaning and would not exist. I agree I take a human-centric point of view, but as a human, born with a human mind, in a human society, it's a ridiculous demand that I empathize with other species above my own. I think it is an amazingly beautiful achievement that we are able to sympathize and feel compassion for other lifeforms, but it can be taken too far.

@IneptTroopr I don´t empathize ABOVE my own, but definately changed my mind about that "Humans are the crown of the creation" thing within the last years I worked with animals. I know for many I may appear like a crazy hippie but I think I can live with that, it´s me. The abuse of children and animals upsets me deeply and the depths of human nature so often disgusted the heck out of me at work. Something I have never to expect from an animal. I try to respect every being on the same level since.

@IneptTroopr 'Tis not empathy these people carry for the dog, yet sympathy - a dog is an animal, a harmless creature to a much greater extent then the human creature...being human alone carries much weight with it - so when an animal gets hurt, we feel that it's wrong for a creature that has not done anything bad to die in such a way...whereas the man - he could be a psycho as well for all we know.

@IneptTroopr It may just be the desensitizing of the masses in terms of human death around us. We see it on the news. We're used to it. The news doesn't cover "A dog brutally curbstomped to death" everyday. But they do cover "A woman brutally curbstomped to death".

@IneptTroopr Well, a lot of homeless guys aren't really like that. A lot do drugs and are disrespectful. Also, in my city, these people offered a homeless man a meal, but instead, he just wanted money for cigarettes. It's not about having more in common, it's about who you have more sympathy for. Dogs can't think like humans, so they are innocent. Plus, they are cute.

@ultravirgin I drove through Philly last month and stopped to get a cheesesteak. A black homeless dude approached me, and I gave him half my meal. He didn't ask for money or cigarettes, he just wanted a cheesesteak and was downright polite about it. Poor guy.
