Rooney's an explosion of talent, easily one of the greatest actors who ever lived (watch him in Frankenheimer's "The Comedian" on live television!), and he mentored Sammy Davis, Jr., the only performer who could do as many different things on stage as Rooney.
Did anyone see him recently appearing before a Congressional panel on adult abuse. Sad indeed...abused, bilked of his monies, degraded. What is wrong with this world.
@VMDICKS what's wrong with this world...it's filled with the bachmanns, palins, santorums & perrys who thrive on the ignorance, intolerance, bigotry, fear mongering and hate of other people! lol, just kidding...no really!
Dad saw him in England just after WW2 had ended. He was at a village pub near his airbase having a drink, playing the piano, singing and just having fun.
Did anyone else notice that Bennett Cerf and Martin Gabel did not stand all the way up when they shook hands with Mickey, maybe it was as not to point out his short stature.

I can't stand Rooney. If I had been there that night I would have gotten him by both hands and spinned him around fast and threw him into the audience. I'll bet Bennet Serf would have liked that.
He would have been funny on Hollywood Squares. That used to be SO funny. I don't even bother to watch TV anymore. That's why I'm sitting here watching Mickey Rooney clips. Atta boy Mickey!!!
I went to party in his honor three years ago. He performed. Along with his young wife. He was sweet and humble. Wrote a damn good autobiography. Married some of the most gorgeous gals in the world including Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner. Was a star in the silent days. The studio's biggest box office draw in the 30s and 40s. He could act, sing, dance and light up a room. Hooray for the great Mickey Rooney!!!
this has so much to do with the education programs in our American schools. The dumbing down of American children has many avenues, even the 'pop' music has no melody, also I think we as kids had to watch TV programed for a mainly adult crowd, no TV is for HS kids and the under 30 generation....
The poor MGM child stars. He's adorable here but what he's done with his golden years are pretty pitiful. But hey, he and Elizabeth are still alive to reminisce together. I thought John Charles was going to kiss him!
@pockypurse As much as I would like to have this show back on TV, it wouldn't be the same because it's not about movies anymore. it's about pop culture now. And if it is about movies, all you hear about is teen stuff. And everyone is so trashy nowadays, I'd rather not have something classy and funny like this be ruined with the stars of today
@shaldana Never heard Jim Carrey sing in any musical and never have seen Carrey play an instrument . Carrey is not even close to the talent Mickey Rooney had.
@Etnalleb : You might hear Carrey sing soon, he's allegedly going to be in a remake of the musical Damn Yankees. But you're right, Rooney beats Carrey any day!
@anniedannan Justin Bieber can act dead really well ... he can sing and dance. He plays a couple of instruments .. and he does a really good impersonation of a little girl.
@anniedannan There is NOTHING Mickey can't do. I just saw him in "It's a Mad Mad Mad mad World." He was absolutely hilarious. Funny flick if you haven't seen it. It is here on You Tube. Part 1 = 2 hrs , and Part 2 = 41 minutes.
His best dramatic performance, IMO, was in 1943's "The Human Comedy." That movie breaks my heart every time.
But I love him in the younger, Andy Hardy/Babes... films just as much. Oh, and special mention to National Velvet. I could be here ALL DAY.
I read Mickey's autobio book last week. Well worth reading and full of tons of Hollywood gossip. The bonus is that you get an inside vivid look at Rooney's huge libido. He's 5'3" and every inch is loaded with talent! Nice guy and a very spiritual person. Doug....Los Angeles
um, i think that may be not entirely true. someone who has a great deal of sex is generally happy...this is not in dispute. and the happier you are the better you are at your job, whatever that job may be. just a thought.
I beg to differ. Some of the worlds greatest actors (ie: Daniel Day-Lewis, Johnny Depp, Dustin Hoffman) are method actors who abandon their personal emotions to become their character. From depression, also, stems a great deal of literature and poetry :) Sure, I guess if you're "happy" you can function in the world, but if it makes your work better is another thing.
@evfich Well, a great amount of sex COULD mean your are addicted. Addicts are not truely happy people.. The worse you are addicted the more unhappy the person.
I'm not old enough to remember, but one thing that i noticed is that the man behind the newspaper in the Reception Room of Matthews and Casey in Broadway Melody of 1940 who turned out to be Fred Astaire's character Johnny's old friend Dan (who watched with Fred as Trixie Firschke did her amazing tricks) was played by a man named Joe Yule! I never knew that that Joe Yule and this Mickey Rooney were father and son!!!
Mickey Rooney's talent worth its weight in platnum times two. His is one of the funniest vocal disguises in WML -- Wallace Wimple eat your heart out.
Wonderful to see Martin Gabel. Mr. Urbanity. Real class.
Gil Fates reported in his book that when he made "WML at 25" Mickey Rooney wanted $1000 for reuse of his clip. Rooney did, if memory serves me, appear in WML-25, so one wonders if Fates caved into the demand.
I am not as tall as other fellows. LOL. Tall in talent, though.
