  • what a powerful video.

  • During the beginning, you said that the double and single action revolvers are probably the only types of revolvers, but you actually forgot about the auto-revolver. Dunno if you know about those, but the Mateba Autorevolvers are really some nice pieces of work. You should definitely check them out some time.

  • im new to guns and still learning about them, and i dont understand why automatics arent considered double action sense they can shoot by just pulling the trigger or cocking it, can a gun expert help me here?

  • Hello Hickok, just wanted to say that the term "Double Action" actually refers to the way that the revolver, when the hammer is pulled, that it performs two actions at the same time- that is, the hammer comming back and the cylinder rotating. Single Action means it just releases the hammer. Just wanted to point that out as it was just a small discrepancy. I love your videos though, you always have great stuff in them. I have almost as much fun watching you shoot as actually shooting!

  • Hickok, Do you have an opinion on the durability and reliability on Break-open reload revolvers? I've heard that the durability over time for break-opens is in the air, such as the possibility of the hinge distorting or breaking. I don't really know how to feel about them and I feel that a .357 break-open would fit me well. What do you think?

  • Handgun types are revolvers and pistols. Isn't this a little misleading between subtypes of handguns and the actions of handguns? You could have revolvers and pistols in either single action or double action, or SA/DA, DAO, and if you have a SIG pistol, then DAK...

  • Can you please do a video with the Glock 26 because that is the standard issue for Boston Police and I really want them to make a change with that my friend said that his father who is the commander said it's cheap and very weak. Please do one because I really want them to change and your video would be proof.

  • @raptisadam7, It's neither "cheap" nor "weak."

  • @hickok45 Shouldn't they be using something more intimidating though? I mean the Glock 26 is really small and is used a concealed weapon, shouldn't they use a bigger gun nothing like the Desert Eagle but something with more of a scary look than the Glock 26?

  • at 6:53 you get to hear Hickok make the bang sound as he pulls the trigger.

  • There is such a thing as a full auto 1911?

Doesn't seem like it would be very useful. You'd just empty the magazine right away.

  • lol, you sound like Munden when you're describing how the single action works.

  • I applaud you for making this, gun education is the best way of breaking down negative stereotypes, and misconceptions.

  • Why wouldn't someone carrying a double action revolver not want to cock the hammer other than for time and speed reasons ?

  • @bigbmf1210 Those are the two main reasons. Any other reason would really be a matter of personal preference more so than a viable reason.

  • @bigbmf1210, I think I address this is various videos. Study self defense with revolvers and legal aspects of it. Read Ayoob.

  • I like the dubble action automatic pistols. Like the Walther P-38.

  • Just so you know, I believe you wrote 1991 instead of 1911 in the popup

  • The last one (Colt Model 1991) is semiautomatic but also a single action gun.

It is to different categories how we divide modern guns.

Great video, please keep coming with new…

    Thanks old man!

  • A bedroom review sounds scary...

  • @dunecoon42069666 Especially since it is likely to involve firearms. I would be certain my bed was made properly.

  • is it easy for the chamber in a revolver not to line up with the barrel

  • Thanks for that information. Now I know which one to get when Im ready buying a handgun.

  • i knew all of this, but i watched the video any way <3 :)

  • @southparkkid278 Me too. It reminded me of my uncle telling me this stuff when I was younger.

  • youre lucky to have these "toys"

yes sure they arent real toys and are very dangerous, but to gun enthusiasts and collectors they are just like toys

  • very nice video. THUMBS UP!

  • Also I prefer double action because if you need to shoot in a hurry, you can... But I also dislike them in the sense if a new shooter is shooting them and is scared by the recoil and squeeze the trigger again, it fires off. And the fact that you can work a double action as if it were a single is nice, for accuracy.

  • .38 TROOPER 11

    ????

  • Thanks Hickok. I love your instructional videos. I show them to people before I take them on their first trip out shooting. You explain things better than I do. Thanks again keep up the good work!

  • You forgot bolt action, aka silhouette pistols.

  • thanx :)

  • excellent, well-presented video on the basics of handguns. thanks!

  • hickok did you just leave a fully loaded 1911 magazine and a fully functioning 1911 alone and not shoot it once. are you okay , are you sick???

Another great video, the basic information really helps us beginners a lot.

  • There's also single action and double action semi-autos. I'm referring to the fact that the 1911 has to be cocked for it to fire the first shot, even though it basically cocks itself after that. While others don't have to be(and I heard people use de-cock them as an extra safety measure...longer trigger pull and heavier but still ready to fire)

  • @mrkiky , That's not what this video is about.

  • @hickok45 IS THAT SECOND GUN A COLT TROOPER

  • @hickok45 you should do the different types of long arms... the different actions types etc muzzle loaders lever action bolt action maybe the difference between full ato semi auto single shot whatever . even the difference between a shotgun and a rifle lol I really hate it when people get those confused. Of course that's if you haven't already got a video of this kind. I am new to this channel and I am slowly working my way through your channel. I must say I love your vids =]

  • definately my favorite youtube channel! this is stuff i know but i still enjoyed this vid. hickok can i come shoot some of my guns there? haha

  • "Automatic" I love the way he says it

  • love ur vids

  • My daddy, told me if I laid a finger on any of his gun's while he was not home, he would kick my fanny, till I couldn't stand for a week, and then some! I did once and felt his wrath! I never touched one unless he was home again! It was like he had a camera in his bedroom, he knew where everything was!

  • The firing pin broke on my BELOVED Smith and Wesson!

  • did they ever fix the 1991 when it was ejecting the firing pin and i think the spring as well... and is a gold cup a, how should i say this , a highly modified 1911?

  • HAMMER THE COCK!!!!!

  • Hey hickok45, there are two really odd guns called the Webley-Fosbery and the Mataba revolver. Both are revolvers that can function single action, double action, or as an automatic. Would they fill a fourth pistol category or are they just an automatic pistol?

  • when are you doing the reload video?

  • Thanks for the info !

  • I have always wondered if you can "decock" (I think thats the term people use) a single action revolver without firing a shot off. Or is it dependent on the gun?

  • @onimusha542 Yes. You just hold the hammer, pull the trigger, and let the hammer slowly go forward.

  • @Speedogg138 Thanks. I have always wondered that. Handy tip to keep in mind for sure.

  • @onimusha542 look at 1:33 he is actually doing it

  • could you make a video just for me on my birthday December 12 :D

  • very nice :) i love the m1911, gotta be my favorite hand gun ever made. I'm in Australia, so its a little stricter on guns and such, but am looking to join a club here to start shooting.

would love a safty video also as one of the viewers has posted :)

  • Comment removed

  • their are also the da/sa guns double action single action like the sig saur

first shot is double then it becomes single action

    great video hickok

  • Semi automatics are my fav!

  • wel i love the video but there is 1 thing i missed you talked about differend guns wel i know that there was a automatic revolver (now a very expensive one!) a webley-fosbery

  • semi wheelguns

    check Mateba

  • Will a .45 S&W (Schofield) fire in a .45 Colt SAA? And if so, is it safe?

  • I'm sure you're aware of this, but for anyone that doesn't know there are fully automatic handguns and a fairly new type of firearm that fires caseless ammunition

  • @anthcybo, Yes, hence the title, "Three Basic Handgun Types." :-)

  • @anthcybo please tell me more about caseless ammo!

  • @anthcybo Derp.

  • @anthcybo if you mean extremely prototype stage metal storm hand hands, well those pieces of shit are long way off

  • @anthcybo metal storm guns :)

  • whats the age limit to get a gun permit?

  • @angelckk1

In the USA you have to be 18 to purchase a shotgun and 21 to purchase a handgun or rifle.

  • @anthcybo that sucks....

  • @anthcybo No you have to be 18 to buy long arms and 21 to buy handguns

  • can you make a video on how you made your range? of course when you have time

  • yo hickok i have question. with a semi-automatic, can u fire the pistol by cocking the hammer like a revolver or do u have to pull the slide back and then fire. please respond

  • I am a silly billy, would someone fill me in as to why you'd want to cock a double action revolver? (Benefits and problems.)

  • @Silenthen1 , Generally, it's easier to hit the target in single action mode.

  • @hickok45 Yea, I knew that... Does it make the trigger pull less? (I don't mean to sound harsh if I did.)

  • @hickok45 Less trigger pull..(easier to pull)

  • @hickok45 lighter trigger pull since your not cocking the hammer as you pull the trigger

  • @Silenthen1 When the hammer is not cocked, the trigger pull is about 10 lbs. When it is it's about 2.5 lbs.

  • @Anonymous1226 I see...... thanks guys!

  • @Silenthen1

Single action trigger pull is generally lighter than double action, therefore is more accurate.

  • @SpannerLytic Cool, I was thinking about getting into revolvers.

  • @Silenthen1 I think he said that the longer trigger pull on the double action can throw you off target. If you cock the hammer first and then pull the trigger it eliminates this long trigger pull.

  • @Silenthen1 when cocked back, the trigger has a lighter trigger pull. Because you just have to release the tension on the hammer, not force the hammer back first then drop it. Less trigger pull=more accuracy.

  • @Silenthen1 Single action has a shorter and lighter trigger pull

  • @Silenthen1 shorter trigger pull, so you don't jerk the gun too much when you pull the trigger

  • @Silenthen1 You'd use the SA mode on a DA revolver to lighten the trigger pull. If you've ever shot double action it's much harder to stay on target through the pull of the trigger until the hammer drops. It is much easier with the hammer cocked already.

If you have the ability(as in it's legal to do), take out a double action revolver and try both. You will definitely tell a difference.

  • I could enjoy firearms if I would not have 16 years :(!

    Greetings from Argentina! :D

  • My neighbor shot and killed his best friend when i was a youth. Typical auto feed "the mag is out so it must be unloaded". Hickok speaks the gospel of gun safety.

  • por que no una M-60...automatic vs a wall

  • 13 zombies disliked this video

  • I already knew this but I couldn't stop watching. Also, you didn't turn the video into a gun safety video, Mr. Hickok. It was very educational.

  • Great video, you've earned yourself another subscriber. I've gotta question though, is your username a nod to Wild Bill, is it just a coincidence, or is it your real name?

  • 13 People Wriek of Being Anti-Gunners!

  • Comment removed

  • I cannot STRESS how much your videos have Informed me. Keep up the good work.

  • @nebula25x Just because it has a striker does not mean each pull will be the same. The Walther P99 has Double and Single action. :)

  • I was wondering do you have to cock the hammer on a semi automatic pistol to fire it?

Will it fire if you pull the trigger when the hammer is resting?

  • @TheSpartan2910 also the M9 baretta is a double action. pulling the trigger will work the hammer. why it would even need that is anybody's guess, considering you cant de-cock the m9. the sig 228 is a double action, but it has a lever for de-cocking the gun, which lets the pressure off the hammer.

  • @beliefstoppers call of duty doesn't make you an expert. An expert is someone who is highly trained and extremely efficient in their area of operation.

  • Its good you included " who doesnt know how it works" because i am 13 and am an expert in guns of many types

  • does it harm a striker fired pistol to leave it cocked and loaded all the time?i have no kids at home, and the gun is either on me,or in my night-stand at all times.safety is not my concern.i just wonder if leaving the gun in ready to go condition will weaken a spring or someting, thanks

  • You may want to do a part 2 of this series covering some more about the different types of actions available in semi autos, such as da/sa, dao, sao, etc.

  • Are you FPS Russia's Dad?

  • I'd watch you do a vid on firearm safety haha

  • @uttoushii he does have a couple on gun safety.

  • @uttoushii He's got one. Search "Gun Safety" on youtube.

  • To the guy down here in the comment who said glocks are single action...they are not.the are semi-automatic besides the glock 18 wich is fully-automatic,3-round burst and semi-auto

  • i'm 15 and i have a m-1911 series 80 it is as a birthdaygift i know better than to be all like oooo theres a gun lets pick it up and dry fire and then blow a hole in the wall

  • i'm 15 and i have a m-1911 series 80 it is a birthday gift

  • Oh, and John Dillinger was walking around with a fully-automatic 1911.

  • Although those two are by far the most common types of revolver, I believe there was actually an attempt to design a gas-operated revolver or something like that.

  • Hickok,

What about single action Ruger Mark III's? These are pistols and not revolvers. How do these fire? I guess the slide has to be racked, but only once right?

    Thanks, Steve

  • Hickok,

    Thanks, Steve

  • Well I thought this Video was good. I will let my kids watch it and ill also remind them that there are also some double action semi autos out there. but these are the basick thee types Thanks Hickok45. JKW in Modesto Ca.

  • @nebula25x When i say Double Action and Double Action Only, i mean that the trigger/firing-pin can be dry-fired again and again, simply by pulling the trigger:)

  • @nebula25x Glocks ain't Double Action Only, they are Single Action. It just looks like they are Double Action Only because when the slide is pulled back, the firing pin (and the trigger) is cocked. So when the trigger is pulled, the gun fires and ejects the spent shell and by that cocking the firing pin (and the trigger) again. When the gun is dry fired the trigger stays back and the slide needs to be pulled back again to cock the trigger to the fire position again.

  • do you ever hurt your firing pin by dry firing them so much i know u doing that for demonstration purpose but is it not still bad

  • hickok 45 what 9mm do u recamend for teens

  • Hi Hickock45, what I'm getting from this video is that 'action' basically means actuating the hammer to fire. Single action = you have to pull the hammer back, and double action = pulling the trigger or pulling the hammer back. My question is, why do manufacturers, say a Ruger LCR revolver, say theirs is double action only if you can't actuate the hammer without pulling the trigger, since the hammer is internal?

  • @supervf1 Double action means that pulling the trigger both cocks the hammer and fires the weapon. Double action only revolvers, usually ones with internal hammers, can only be fired by pulling the trigger. Double action does not mean that it can necessarily be fired single action.

  • You have been the most fun youtube channel for gun aficionados for quite some time, and I applaud your new effort to provide a series of videos on basic topics for the novice. I'm sure I'll direct people just getting into shooting to your channel to check these videos out.

  • you simply have allthe bestvids,,,, . period keep em coming please,, as always saftey first!

  • Awesome show of the wheel guns. I grew up with Rugers and did not know Colts turned CW. Learn something new everyday. I love your videos brother, just wish we could bring you back from the dark side(glock). IMO the 1911 is about to go big. S&W, Ruger, Sig etc are all making em now. Its like the big autos in a shootout. Only its guns not cars.

If you could please pass onto the new generation of the gun culture your knowledge of the 1911. It would go next to my Jeff Cooper books, Only in video.

  • Thanks for this video Hickok45. I am not a good teacher. I have a talent for making eyes glaze over when I "teach." Now I have a links that I can give noobs that ask questions about guns.

  • nice to know if some zombies treath our lifes :P

in the rest... i prefer my MTB and playng basket

  • The colt has a lot of history but still is the weakest pistol out there in comparison with the desert eagle and revolver

  • You have all my favorite handguns in one video review! beautiful 1911 :)

  • AS to your single and double action soliloquy.

There is a Revolver that is an auto-revolver, as in, it uses a blowback action to rotate the cylinder and lock the firing pin back.

Although the only revolver I know of that's an auto-revolver is the Mateba (Marh-Tay-Bah)

  • @EFG44 , There are all sorts of strange guns that have been made - all sorts of exceptions. That's why this was just for "Basic" types. Many people out there don't even know the difference among these.

  • @hickok45 what about the berreta92fs? you said on another video that it has a double action feature in it and somehow turns to single action.

btw it sounds like your narrating some action movie at the start of the video.

  • @hickok45 This is irrelevant, but I thought I'd just take a shot in the dark.

Could you please do a Webley Mk5>6 revolver? Break action revolvers are just my absolute favourite <3

  • @hickok45 That is a gorgeous 1911, may i ask how you acquired it?

  • @EFG44 the British Webley-Fosbery (.455) was an auto revolver. it was used during ww2

  • @crossan008

so it is! Thank you, kind sir!

  • @EFG44 I believe the Russians made one as well, or at least a revolver with a recoiling cylinder. Forgive me, revolvers are not my thing and I don't know a whole lot about them. I'd love to own a Colt Python, but who wouldn't?

  • @EFG44 there's also the webley-fosbery

  • @ironman052992 And the chiappa Rhino.

a lot of odd firearms nowadays, no?

  • @EFG44 so true. gotta love 'em.

  • @EFG44 The Webley-Fosbery did that too.

  • @EFG44 And also Webley - Fosbery, british autorevolver in .455 Webley.

  • @EFG44 theres also the webley in semi-auto.

  • good man

  • do you have any taurus or can review some taurus/millennium pro models

  • all these people i used to know were firearms haters. so i dont talk to them anymore because they would always bitch at me about how the dont like guns.

but hickok, you were talking about youth using fireamrs. if youth have taken safety courses then it is fire for them to use firearms.

  • you forgot the mateba autorevolver.. i understand this gun would be difficult to obtain, though it is the third type of revolver and i beg that you can atleat give info on it:)

  • Another great video.

    Thanks!

  • can you make a video that goes over the differences between the types of semi-automatic handguns with the different single and single/double actions?

  • Very informative, definitely well done for somebody like me. I learned and voted thumbs up. Thanks.

  • semi auto haha then auto...just not available to civilians

  • I've never shot a gun in my life, it's just not possible without an extensive backup check, training etc from our crappy country, so I do enjoy watching these videos for beginners.

  • There actually is a third type of revolver action in the Webley fosbery, which is the worlds first (and maybe only) automatic revolver. Look it up its a really cool and unique gun.

  • @MUSICALGUNNUT45 take a look at the savage figure eight that's a neat looking and functioning revolver so is the webley hehe

  • Great video. Loved it.

  • i like the basic vids like this.

  • can i have a gun

  • Thanks Hickok!

    This is a Fantastic Video.

This is one I will 'mark' and use for those that ask me about my guns.

I just explained yesterday to a Lady Customer of mine how a gun works and WHY I have guns.

She learned to not 'fear' guns.

I also let her hold my little revolver (emptied of course and triple checked) and feel the difference between the DA and SA.

She was thankful and walked away with a little bit of knowledge.

That is what is needed..Knowledge! To Remove FEAR and Ignorance!

  • @SHaywoodarmy your Glock 19 is DAO because the striker is held at a point that if it releases (and makes it past the striker block) it well not fire the trigger is what makes it a DA it preforms two actions fully cocking the striker and releasing the sear

  • Comment removed

  • @SHaywoodarmy type in "how a glock works" there are cutaway videos here on youtube

  • @masterofnotmuch Thanks for the info. The cutaway video made it much more clear.

  • @SHaywoodarmy no problem always happy to help

  • Comment removed

  • I have a browning HP and if you remove the magazine the gun won't fire i never understood why they did that but after watching this vid i see the logic behind it.

  • well theres a forth if you count it, full auto.

  • When I was a kid I hated those double action cap guns because of the long travel of the triggers. They were heavey too.

  • Basic fundamentals is always good and a nice way to get safety emphasis as well.

  • very informative

  • make a video about shooting the s&w 44 magnum please

  • there is a fully auto revlover i think it was made by webly

  • Is there any chance you'd do another one of these for shotguns/rifles etc?
