The DS is not a Game boy, The BIOS on the DS had been rewritten with no traces of the original .bin files found in the Game boy source code, When a cart of a Game boy is recognized on the DS you may notice there is no information about the game, This is because the DS does not have the right utilities to access battery file's, When the game is opened the DS starts a separate GBA BIOS wrote ONLY for that mode, Meanwhile the DS BIOS stop's, Therefore a DS is not a GBA, More a hosting platform.

The DS Lite can play Game Boy Advance games, but it's not a Game Boy, as you yourself said.
