I can agree with your opinion that it might not sound amazing (could be the studio equipment). The album version sounds good and I'm sure it sounds good actually being there (my opinion). Meaningless lyrics?? You have to be kidding.. This song is about the parable of the prodigal son. One of Jesus' most meaningful parables. I think he did a great job of expressing the emotions of the family in this song. Very emotional and meaningful. The exact opposite of your interpretation.
