One of the reasons they were passed so easily on the straights was that a plug lead had come off and they were only running on 11 cylinders (according to the article in Octane). Not to say all the development on the other cars isn't true :-(
It has to be considered that historic racing doesn't strictly mean that all the cars are raced as they would have been in period. Careful observers of this video may have noticed that the lightweight E-types and Cobras seem to pass the fabled GTO as though it were towing a caravan. The answer: go-fast and go-even-faster-for-stupid-money engine, drivetrain and suspension parts are still being developed for the Cobras and XKs. There's no 250 GTO section in a monthly JC Whitney catalog, after all.
Note here the cunning Team Nick Mason strategy of hanging a pit board lettered with the car's current market value out as the driver passes. Also note that Nick bought his GTO back when such things were just tired, out-to-pasture racehorses before the heady days when all things '60s and exotic became as precious as nice houses.
Finally, and most importantly, note the work it takes to keep one of these great old things moving quickly in a useful direction around a racetrack.
Not that I am anyone to speak, but it sounds like Brundle is going a crappy job of shifting? That grinding of his mis-shifts doesn't sound good for the GTO...
I saw this race on TV recently and this No. 22 camera car finished near the front. Absolutely awesome to have this footage though it's disturbing how close this GTO comes to getting clipped at times.
As a huge fan of this particular car it is pretty unnerving yet incredibly reaffirming that these cars want nothing more than to race hard and be admired as athletes first and foremost. Sadly, museum pieces seem to lose their passion once they leave the track.
Smoother!! Smoother!! Better shifts and shift points.
USE the revs that V-12 can give, no short shifting!!
Thats the advantage over our iron V-8s..
The bloody chicane comes just where the GTO could SHINE..
Learn from David Piper, lad...
You can do better, you CAN...!!

I am not sure if it was the driver or was it ferraries gearbox that seemed so bad

First thing he did was try to jam the dogleg into reverse... whilst they make for a quicker 2nd - 3rd shift, I'd be pretty wary of owning one :S

The E-types and the like are fairly easy to replace, where would you look for a 250 gto ?? hence the sensible driving of this masterpiece of a car

I love the 458, the F430 is alright, but this is the best Ferrari.
