Yes, I often use the hand out as a warning, especially when someone tries to overtake coming up to a blind bend and I can see there's a car coming the other way!
Wasn't this the same spot that someone honked you when they found they couldn't complete an overtake before they had to turn off?
I have had to do ths on blind bends a number of times. I was heading downhill at about 30 in a 30zone too. Not wise, one young lad went pale when he saw my hand come out and realised a car was heading towards his bonnet at a great speed and just nipped in behind me in time.

Sometimes it works, and other times they drive through your hand. At least they do at the level my hand is at.
