@IwuvSoCal After the death of Queen Anne the throne was supposed to go to her brother James II but the Parliament refused to crown him as a King because he was Catholic so they gave the throne to George I of Hanover who was an indirect heir and a Protestant. A lot of people Highlanders died
@Iusedtobeacat93 "Charles Stuart led a rebellion against the English to regain the throne because he was a Scot" Charles led a rebellion against the Hanovarian regime in both Scotland and England because he wanted to put his father on the throne. He was no more a Scot by blood than the Hanovarians were themselves. In other words out of his eight great grand parents one was a Scot.

@TheDarkFrontier you know after the red coats...they rounded up men wearing kilts who were not in any army and hung them on the spot....also women raped, and I have a family story passed down about a 9 year old being axed in the back of the head for leaving a burning building.........still not as bad as what some irish suffered though hey laddie ;)
@TheDarkFrontier That is true. Catholicism was also a minority in the Highlands and in fact even even a minority within the Hhghlanders in the Jacobite ranks itself. The bulk of the Jacobites (in Scotland) were Episcopalians.
@TheDarkFrontier Aye, the scots that helped cumberland were disgusted by his actions. I do not blame them. He hung people that wore kilts killed bagpipes and outlawed scots to bear arms. He is a little bitch that did no fighting, he ordered people to do his work, in fact the campbells and other scottish clans that helped him win culloden refused to help him murder rape and pillage. He has a grave in england, i spit on it about 1ce a year...
Many forget there were hundreds of French present at Culloden as well fighting for Charlie. They fought along with Dillon's, Ruth's and Lally's Irish Regiments. Those men spoke French, they had French manners and French homes, but their names were as Irish as the peat.
My Scottish ancestor, William Lawson, was brought to the colonies as a slave for fighting in the Battle of Cullden. A book about him (William Lawson, the Scottish Rebel) was written by Bill Porter. Once here, he fought under Capt Daniel Trigg in teh Am Rev. and his sons and grandsons fought for the CSA. (See Lawon Confederate Memorial Cem in Snowflake VA)
im so proud to be a scot..even tho my clan is recognized as mostly lowland, due to the recognition of only nobles in my clan who were lowlanders, i have the heart of a gael and the honor of a scot and the pride as a clansmen
@Southman45 murray was my ancestor im not proud of that it was him who pursuaded charlie to head north at derby instead of taking london the most critical decision in scottish history imo i much prefer my other ancestor andrew murray of the 13th century rebellion who played a big part in the battle of stirling bridge ,falkirk and bannockburn and was a brilliant guerilla tactician
Strange as it seems, Flora Mcdonald emigrated to the north american colonies, and 30 years later supported the English crown during the American Revolution.
Oh, but I pity the man that hears the pipes coming afainst him from out of the morning mists.
@jones0430 Most Scots fought on the side of the crown, not because they had any great love for the English, but because they could not concieve of them losing and they did not want to go thru what had happened after Culloden again. You are right about the pipes; they can put the fear of God into a man or bring him to tears. There is nothing else that compares to them.
A terrible place to battle we where stuck in the bogs and easy for government troops to fire volley on, plus they had more artillery and better cover. The skewed lines of the Jacobite ranks made it easy.
The singer sounds Irish.
The English where the ones who started the clan feuds, paying clans or promising lands to battle their countryman.
There was even an Irish unit present in the Government ranks at the battle, there where the Irish Picquets in the Jacobite ranks.
I cannot believe some of the Scots helped the English i just cant believe that they could do that i mean because of them Scotland has not got its independence from the UK i think Scotland should bring back the Jacobite's like the IRA but Jacobite's.
as much as i am a unionist, you have to admire Prince Charles' achievement; he arrived in scotland with one or two people, and within a few weeks had raised an army of clansmen that almost overran london.
have to say though, the clans' tactics at culloden moor were appalling. they did not consider the terrain, their charge was disorganised, and only a few swordsmen made it to the redcoat lines, and only on one flank.
Culloden reloaded - 50 tanks, 250 armored vehicles. 1 division, called "Viking" (or Totenkopf or the Reich) - what ever you want, we will sent through the time.... and then let us see will happen
it was sadly, for the most part, Scots fighting Scots under different banners, just a sad day for Scotland that it could be so easily divided, old Clan feuds died hard that day and the Highlands were never the same again.
I like this film ..It shows the faces of ordinary men ,makes you feel for the poor folk that took part in this terrible battle.I feel sadness ,not just pride .well done."s urrainn dhomh iad a chluinnteil.
i spent many a summers day in highlands as a child & now nearly 40 i still go camping for weeks, Colloden i visit when i can & lay heather & the cairn of the fraser clan great song & vid stirs the blood
If you want to crush a people, take their language- which is what the British did their level best to do everywhere. Many a proud man died that day to be free of the oppression of the tyranny of a King to whom they owed no allegiance. Bless their memory forever....
Thank you for this upload- my ancestors fought with the Jacobites and paid a heavy price. Visiting Culloden Moor in the mid eighties really was a special experience for me-this music and vid bring back those memories.

But Today , we Call , to them ... To GIVE ALL US THE SAME COURAGE , THAT THEY HAD !!! WE MARCH TO THE SAME SONGS !!! We serve , as N.A.T.O. LET THE BATTLE CRY RING TRUE & FOR FREEDOM !!!
A dark day in Scottish history but we have our stone, pipes and kilts back and now our freedom from English rule. God bless those brave men. I am of scottiish heritage and play the pipes proudly. For all those who fought. By the way i was born on april 16
In Addition to my last comment, our language was banned under hanovarian rule, and now there are not many scots men and women who have knowledge of the language let alone and respect for it, fair enough scots gaelic is on the rise, but there are still a minority of people who can speak the language.
Thank you for this video. My ancestor, John Houston survived that and excaped to America on a smuggler as the clan leaders were being hunted down and killed. We are a branch of Clan Donald of the Isles.
@hustn99 We all have lots of ancestors and I say good on, to your ancestor. My friend, Old Munro says that its said that a piper who piped the Battle was at Culloden, was at Yorktown James Hickman my ancestor there with another cousin George Washington. My ancestor Charles Scarborough, was Physician to CharlesI II and delivered the baby that they called, the Old Pretender, the Da of Bonnie Prince Charlie. We Americans, have many noble ancestors. We Americans have ancestors of many countries.
no comment this is rly sad story and song too i wish i am from scotland or ireland rly love it ..this song means alot to me i am from serbia but in my heart i am them !!thx
I really injoyed this song it matches the actual historical event perfectly and the pictures that were put along with it goes with the song nicely. I quite injoy the history on this event and i hope to see more videos like this and see more people take interest in it.

@TheAlexBrend The Grants were neutral during the rebellion. They were natural allies with the Government but refused to fight because they felt they were due compensation after supporting the government in the 1715 rebellion.
Classy song and story. Much of Scotland was divided along lines of historical enmity during the War of the Austrian Succession, and France attempted to take advantage of the situation through the Jacobite campaign. Hanoverian victory at Culloden Moor put paid to the would-be coup d'etat.
@kingarfur123 This stand by the Royal Écossois may have given Charles Edward Stuart the time to make his escape. At the time when the Macdonald regiments were crumbling and fleeing the field, Stuart seems to have been rallying Perth's and Glenbuchat's regiments when Sullivan rode up to Captain Shea who commanded Stuart's bodyguard: "Yu see all is going to pot. Yu can be of no great succor, so before a general deroute wch will soon be, Sieze upon the Prince & take him off..............
To ignore the past is to ignore the future and thats something a scotsman will never do...I have read this once- im not scottish but my heart is there. If we`ll forget whats happend there and on so many other places in Scotland, then we`ll forget what for sad and bad things were happend...but we shouldnt forget it. Thank you for this great song and video.
@thistle223 You do know it was Scotland vs Great Britain many brave Scots gave their lives for the Union at the battle of Culloden fighting under the Duke of Cumberland and alongside brave English and Irish men. The Jacobite army was Roman Chatholic and had French soldiers fighting with them. After this historic battle the UK was able to create the British Empire, Which has done so much good for the world and for Democracy.

Yes, just as there were Scots who sided with the English crown to fight Scots. I am Scots, married to my wee English rose,( Veronica ) i now live in England, have a cafe called The Rest & Be Thankful, named after the place in Scotland. I will always be a Jacobite by heart ( given my name is James Walker Allen), but I have no English foes, only friends ( except the Monarchy)
@kawapilot There was no English crown. It was a British crown. The jacobites ( Latin for supporter of James ) wanted to restore the Catholic Stuart dynasty back on the British throne and replace the Protestant Hanoverian king.
hi, i would just like to point out to those who believe culloden was a battle of scotland v england that it was not. it was the government vs the jacobites - entirely different. hannoverians vs stuarts. the most obvious example proving this is the fact that the campbells from argyll fought for the government. not getting at anyone in particular - just pointing it out to those who keep saying "proud to be scottish"
so what are you saying? other than pointing out the fact that many who should have been allied to their kin, were not. Maybe you are just highlighting the obvious that the Campbells are the traitors they are. Don't forget the part that clan had in the clearances for those that will try to defend their acts.
Great Movie man..... i'm a very proud Scottish American. Im the second generation of Scottish American since my grandpa on my dad's side came from good old Scotland. When i went to the Scotland Homecoming i felt that i was finally home. Im a More on my dad's grandpa side was a sept of Clan Leslie and i also saw it in Gordon as well. My dad's mom was a Martin, which is the sept of Clan Cameron and MacDonald. Scotland is so beaitful country in the world. Im 100% Scottish & Proud to be Highlander
All that I know of my family history in Scotland comes from the generations before me and that was carried with them from Scotland to the U.S. I am a Knox and our family was a sept of Clan MacFarlane. That is enough for me to care and take pride in that distant land across the sea where I hope to go one day. I have done my part to educate my children about their heritage and how Scotland is an important part to that. I will, some day, be there and the connection will come full circle...
There is something about the Scottish spirit that the English overlooked, determination. The Scottish people are resilient and although some may debate this side or that, all Scots share in common a heritage of being known for that determination. It was shown in the settling of the U.S. when hardy Scots conquered the frontier and also in Canada. There are many proud Scots here in North America and Highland pride is still alive and well across the pond. Take care all.
hat off to the zeitgeist ....an educated man who understands(and cares) about the history of a foreign land .your stance or position is not relevant (it may be wrong ..it may be right)...i wish more of my "COUNTRYMEN" understood or knew as much as you...respect
your right our people have a bigger sence of pride and nationalism than many ppl think. That is why i will be voteing for independence in a couple of years because we need to go back to being a independent nation like it should and not be ruled by an english queen and parliment who's only intention is to suck our country dry. SOAR ALBA!
Reply to earlier statments made about the loss of the Highlands to English yeomanry settlers. This is true and can be validated without question however, many of those who were forced to leave carried with them those traditions and ties that have kept a part of Highland culture and pride alive. Look to Canada and the United States and you will see that the Highland bloodlines were not extinguished as, no doubt, was hoped. It is still alive and well and growing. Alba Gu Brath!
@AlexiaMacLeod You do know it was Scotland vs Great Britain many brave Scots gave their lives for the Union at the battle of Culloden fighting under the Duke of Cumberland and alongside brave English and Irish men. The Jacobite army was Roman Chatholic and had French soldiers fighting with them. After this historic battle the UK was able to create the British Empire, Which has done so much good for the world and for Democracy.
@david21085 The Scots fought under the command of Prince Charles Edward Stewart and the Hanovarian troops were commanded by Cumberland. The Jacobites were mostly RC & Episcopalian. Govt troops were predominantly Protestant.
The ethnic cleansing which followed was barbaric and the "great" British Empire continued this tactic until its final collapse with the loss of India. The empire was not a good thing for the world or democracy. It taught corruption where ever it went. I'm glad it's dead.
@david21085 What Empire. They sent all the highlanders abroad , the highland clearances, burnt there crofts.Traditions ,gaelic.Yes and william prince of orange was a butcher to.Yes lots of catholics in Scotland at that time. After the battle it didnt end there. It went on till 1850..The duke of sutherland statue on the ben bhraggie hill in golspie.A hated figure .England was butchers to the scots .Worse than ethnic cleansing .Ruined a great nation . Freedom .
It was a battle between the English/ British vs the Gallant Scots. The outcome of this battle led to an Ethnocide. Mass murder , mass deportations, suppression of heritage, tartan, language , bagpipes and significantly the clan system. After that the British landowners cleared the land for sheep. Today , there are few Scots in the Highlands. The British supplanted the PROUD Highlander with the pushy Yeoman type English settlers, and Scots highland heritage, culture and ethniticity has gone.
It wasn't simply English/British v the gallant Scots, was it? It was Jacobite v Hanoverian. There were many Scots Regiments and Brigades in the Government Side and French and Irish on the Jacobite side. It definitely wasn't England v Scotland. But I do agree the aftermath was absolutely shocking and shameful.
It is reminders such as this that make me very proud of my Scottish heritage and to be one of Clan MacKintosh,,as a soldier I would have been honored to have served for "Colonel Anne", the Beautiful rebel.
hey coll, if the sword in question is presently in kelvingrove, I think you will find it was lost at an earlier battle. Carried by a jacobite yes, but not culloden.
I am fortunate enough to have my home on Culloden Moor. I can almost see the battlefield from my garden. Not many people know the battle of Culloden 16th April 1746 was the very last arm to arm combat battle on British soil... It was a Jacobite attempt at the throne and nothing to do with English and Scottish relations... PS I am English and proud to be living in Scotland.. the song was very apt thank you.
you haven't listened to the woman singing "they died for liberty" and they came up short, General Washington's army knew full well what the English would do from this battle and the lesson learned became something caled the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Washington knew about the British Army BECAUSE he'd served in it ,loyally, during the Seven Years War(French and Indian). That started Ten years after this battle. His quarrel had nothing to do with the Highlands, but greater representation for British colonists in America.
It was a battle between the British / English against the Scots. What followed was Ethnocide, mass deportations, suppression of the Gaelic language, tartan and clan system. Today the English own it, there's hardly a Scot there now.Forced out after the clearances and supplanted by the pushy yeoman type, English Settlers.
A tragic day for the Highland people, it is true that there were scots in both sides, and that any british regiment have this bloody battle in its flags ?? (sorry my english).
you are correct Nacho, no regiment has Culloden as a battle honour. It must be noted that some Scottish regiments still play Jacobite rebel tunes on a regular basis..Johnie Cope and 100 pipers spring to mind..
More precisely, The Bonnie Prince froze up for almost 30 minutes, after which he finally gave the order to charge. A sick twist of fate seen to it that his runner was beheaded by a cannon ball and the order never reached the rest of the lines. Had it not been for that awful streak of luck, I strongly believe that Jacobites would have won and Dark Culloden would have had a much different and less barbaric ending.
Thank you so much for your heartfelt comment, and your greetings. I am actually going to visit your country very soon, I am so looking forward to it, once again thank you..
god save the queen will never be the scottish anthem, flower of scotland is - scotland the brave yep i could live with that but if the queen or pope died tomorow like many i scot i would not weep - william if you think like that you will make enemies on both sides of the border! lmfao mmm is it not religion that makes enemies rangers celtic it matters not a jot when english are sticking a longsword into your throat then raping your wife after there victory at culloden
Nice video. That battle was fought in a shamefull way by the British government, especially the day after, piling the bodies up then firing cannon shot at them to make sure none survived, and not letting anyone help the wounded and dying. I have clan history myself with one of my ancestors being in command of the Jacobite forces in their early years. Alba gu Bráth.
Videos like this break my heart for the Northern people of Scotland - for what happened that day & long after. However, we should be careful to be accurate in the telling of it. This was not a Scotland England war. There were as many Lowlanders as English in the government army. This was a war between Britain and the Jacobites. The Jacobite army was mainly Highland. The Lowland Scots and English feared and despised Highlanders and so it became a final opportunity to destroy their way of life.
look into it you will find that a great number of the Jacobite army were lowlanders. Some of the best regiments were lowland such as Lord Ogilvys, Gordon Glenbucket,Duke of Perths and the Athollmen. To say there were as much Scots in the Government side has never been prooved. Surely there must be a roster of the Hanovarian army as there is of the Jacobites Maybe the powers that be would want us to believe more Scots were against us than for us. PROSPERITY TO SCOTLAND AND NO UNION.
Peever, you are right, there were many jacobites who were Lowland and they were hunted and eradicated just as the Highlanders were... but these Lowlanders did not have their entire communities burned out and destroyed afterwards. The term Jacobite does not mean Highland but was associated with the clans as so much of their army was from the North and of Highland culture. Anyway, the term Highland is associated with Gaelic now but actually, the upland Doric speakers were and are Highland too.
The only battle the Jacobites lost during the whole campaign was at Culloden.
There are all kinds of reasons for the defeat but it was a tragedy for Scottish culture that lost so many of its strongest advocates that April morn.
I recommend all Scots and their descendants to visit the battlefield, where the flags marking the positions, still remain and pay a tribute to our heroes who will never be forgotten.

Strange as it seems, Flora Mcdonald emigrated to the north american colonies, and 30 years later supported the English crown during the American Revolution.
Oh, but I pity the man that hears the pipes coming afainst him from out of the morning mists.
jones0430 1 year ago

I cannot believe some of the Scots helped the English i just cant believe that they could do that i mean because of them Scotland has not got its independence from the UK i think Scotland should bring back the Jacobite's like the IRA but Jacobite's.

as much as i am a unionist, you have to admire Prince Charles' achievement; he arrived in scotland with one or two people, and within a few weeks had raised an army of clansmen that almost overran london.
have to say though, the clans' tactics at culloden moor were appalling. they did not consider the terrain, their charge was disorganised, and only a few swordsmen made it to the redcoat lines, and only on one flank.

it was sadly, for the most part, Scots fighting Scots under different banners, just a sad day for Scotland that it could be so easily divided, old Clan feuds died hard that day and the Highlands were never the same again.

Classy song and story. Much of Scotland was divided along lines of historical enmity during the War of the Austrian Succession, and France attempted to take advantage of the situation through the Jacobite campaign. Hanoverian victory at Culloden Moor put paid to the would-be coup d'etat.

@kawapilot There was no English crown. It was a British crown. The jacobites ( Latin for supporter of James ) wanted to restore the Catholic Stuart dynasty back on the British throne and replace the Protestant Hanoverian king.
jimbob1969 1 year ago
hi, i would just like to point out to those who believe culloden was a battle of scotland v england that it was not. it was the government vs the jacobites - entirely different. hannoverians vs stuarts. the most obvious example proving this is the fact that the campbells from argyll fought for the government. not getting at anyone in particular - just pointing it out to those who keep saying "proud to be scottish"
duffer35 2 years ago
so what are you saying? other than pointing out the fact that many who should have been allied to their kin, were not. Maybe you are just highlighting the obvious that the Campbells are the traitors they are. Don't forget the part that clan had in the clearances for those that will try to defend their acts.

MrRobertson52 1 year ago
It was a battle between the English/ British vs the Gallant Scots. The outcome of this battle led to an Ethnocide. Mass murder , mass deportations, suppression of heritage, tartan, language , bagpipes and significantly the clan system. After that the British landowners cleared the land for sheep. Today , there are few Scots in the Highlands. The British supplanted the PROUD Highlander with the pushy Yeoman type English settlers, and Scots highland heritage, culture and ethniticity has gone.
Seachd12 3 years ago
It wasn't simply English/British v the gallant Scots, was it? It was Jacobite v Hanoverian. There were many Scots Regiments and Brigades in the Government Side and French and Irish on the Jacobite side. It definitely wasn't England v Scotland. But I do agree the aftermath was absolutely shocking and shameful.

Alex989Y 3 years ago
Videos like this break my heart for the Northern people of Scotland - for what happened that day & long after. However, we should be careful to be accurate in the telling of it. This was not a Scotland England war. There were as many Lowlanders as English in the government army. This was a war between Britain and the Jacobites. The Jacobite army was mainly Highland. The Lowland Scots and English feared and despised Highlanders and so it became a final opportunity to destroy their way of life.
martialpiper 3 years ago
look into it you will find that a great number of the Jacobite army were lowlanders. PROSPERITY TO SCOTLAND AND NO UNION.
peever1715 3 years ago
Peever, you are right, there were many jacobites who were Lowland and they were hunted and eradicated just as the Highlanders were... but these Lowlanders did not have their entire communities burned out and destroyed afterwards. The term Jacobite does not mean Highland but was associated with the clans as so much of their army was from the North and of Highland culture. Anyway, the term Highland is associated with Gaelic now but actually, the upland Doric speakers were and are Highland too.
