Some things I thought that made the removal easier are to put it on jack stands first and take off the front tire. Also It is a lot easier to disconnect the washer fluid hose coming out of the reservoir and drain it in a bucket.
I bought a Cat D and i want to have a look behind the bumper to look for damage. She looks perfect but i want to find out why it was cat d. The o/s headlight is cracked , i got a new one on ebay that i am expecting any day now and i think it will also be easier to change the headlight whilst the bumper is off...it doesn't look possible to remove the headlight without removing the bumper, is this correct ?
I did not try to take out the headlights... I am sorry. The taillights are incredibly easy to remove, so I do not imagine the headlights being too hard.
Tail lights are always easy to remove , usually just a few 10mm - but tail lights are not my problem.... I need to remove and change the drivers side headlight , when i open the bonnet i can only see one bolt for the headlight , normally it has 2-3 holding it on , i think there is one (or more) hidden behind the bumper , so i will take off the bumper first and then attempt to change the headlight. I will take photos if i manage to do it successfully
I wish I could. I love getting my hands dirty and doing this kind of work... but I no longer live in the UK. I moved to Miami, FL. Where do you like in the UK?
Epsom in Surrey , you know any local specialist ? i dont want to pay someone to do it for me , i am more than capable , but a bit of guidance is always nice
It is really really easy. I spent forever looking for a DIY to do it because I was worried about doing it myself... but could not find one (which is why I made one)... As long as you have common sense, its simple.
you need 3 things: COMMON SENSE - why is this held on ? what holds it on ? TOOLS - most people don't have all the tools to remove the bumper COURAGE - most people don't have the the courage to 'dismantle' their £10+ car , they are not trained in mechanics so its easier for them to pay someone else
You are not wrong. Luckily I have all three. hehe! Also, you do not need that many tools to take off the bumper (or most things on this car for that matter). All you need is a basic tool set.
a lot of people dont have a basic tool set , therefore they can't remove the bumper , i know you can buy a toolkit cheap as chips but some people are just too stupid to realise how easy it is. i mainly work on ford/peugeot/vauxhall but i have found most other cars are similar in terms of fixings. I will take the headlight and bumper off my golf this weekend but i dont know how to turn my photos into youtube videos ? You coming back to Uk anytime soon ?
Thank god you have this posted, I took my front end apart, worked for two solid weeks, and realized I had forgotten how to put it all back together, thanks!!
I am pretty sure with the GT front, the only part you replace is the part that was removed 24seconds into this video (which is also the part sitting on the floor in the next slide). You also replace the fog grills.

I honestly do not have a lot of experience with the 1.4L MkV as they are not available here, but I would think not.

@mu5t11 - I had the same problem once before, it may just be the clips are not aligning correctly.

Was there any clips connected from the bumper cover to the bumper rebar or is it all held on with the torex screws?

I'm planning on swapping my standard mk5 front bumper for a sporty gt/gti one. I suppose the fittings are the same?
