VW Passat 2006 model won the IIHS awards..i think bad performance during the 90s and 80s is important because it get those car maker to make safer car today.. but car maker like dodge should be revoked from making cars bcoz their 2005 dodge neon still crashes like cars made in the 80s.
It has a 4 star rating by EuroNCap. The 5th star is assigned for pedestrian protection that wasnt that "fashionable" back in `98 ! ! ! So for the passengers the car offers maximum protection !!!!! Its one of the safest cars around ! ! ! !

Good rating for 1998. Right now, 2009, this car is very cheap, You can buy one for $2500 USD. Cheap because it is extremely unreliable. Japanese cars scored the same as this VW, but are very reliable. American made cars (Taurus, Lumina) got even better rating, but are the same as German cars, not very reliable.
yeah, your right, the previous model (35i and facelift) were much better in quality, this model here got developed with audi and shared many parts with the a4...
I have one of the last B5 models made, from 2001. Does anyone know if they made any safety improvements from '98-'01? I know this is a good rating but they could have made it even better over the years hopefully.

lol who really wants to crash dude? :) Iam just saying that my 17 years old E36 has same / better results... But costs almost nothing comparing to VW...
I used to have a Subaru Impreza, now I own a 98 Passat. I feel like I'm in a tank compared to the old car which was more like being in a tin can. It feels a lot safer, I don't know much about crash test ratings, but I'm guessing this holds up pretty well?
this looks like a 2 star rating. the face lifted one has 3. i also own a ford ka which also has 3 stars and i can tell you it does a lot better than this passat. and for the stupid americans: your cars are crappy. although new ones have improved slightly, they still: handle like shit, have poor quality build and use up tons of fuel.
I own the 2003 model of passat. the facelifted version. of course that one performs a lot beter than this one. this was a good car, but it had design flaws. notice the drivers head strike the central pillar and the front pillar being bent sharply.
"I own the 2003 model of passat. the facelifted version. of course that one performs a lot beter than this one."
Actually. IIHS rated the two cars the same. Look at the video of the facelifted model, the A-Pillar also deforms in the same way as the B5 model. That is not exactly a bad thing, because the crash energy is diverted away from the passenger compartment while maintaining much of the needed interior space.
Volkswagen built the best cars in the 90's only look at the mercedes e class crash test from 98 or the c class as well they did perform way poorer. Also ever heard of Procon-ten? that was a safety system of audi (also vw group) that tore the steering weel away from the drivers head with steel wires go search fo it.
there is a difference between build quality and interior quality (vw is good at) and reliabilty at which the have became average.
i do admire there good design skills but my family have owned 2 VW products. the facelift version of this passat and the SEAT LEON. I still like both cars but japanese cars we previously had gave no problems like these did although jap cars dont feel as special
That is because they were shit boxes in the past. Wheels, body and some seats. AC, power windows etc was hardly found on those cars thus nothing could break.
Stupid redneck, american cars are (besides being a fucking junk in everything else) a freaking death trap. If you buy an american car, you know you gonna die if you happen to have an accident, you want to be safe, buy a german vehicle. You are a poor fuck and can't afford a german car? buy something else...
well first off all japanese vehicles are at the top of the chart. believe it or not bmw is doing very shitty job recently. the horrible crash tests results for 6 and 5 series was on yahoo home page just a little while ago. ps. amarican cars are not that far off neither..and they are continuously improving.
my brother has one of these passats and he says this crash test is succesful.look at the man in the car he is gonna die 90 persent.I hope he is not gonna crash anywhere like this.

Consider the damage this car had it was a bad result. In the euroncap this car received 3 stars in 98 ,the 2001 model has 4 and the late model 5 stars wich means it's very safe. so this model isn't too much safe.
This car received a "Good" rating, and the rating system hasn't changed over the years. Given that there was a low risk of injury in this test, it would still be given a "Good" rating. But it's rare that the roof pillar on newer cars buckles in that fashion.
nah man, the passats werent doing so well over the 90's only the 2001 had received 4 stars and the latest model keeps improving i think they rated the 2006-2007 model passat a 5 star, so the newest model is really safe
You're thinking of the 30 mph government crash tests. The test in the video is the 40 mph IIHS offset crash test, which is much more demanding on the structure/safety cage. The IIHS rates cars on a scale of Good/Acceptable/Marginal/Poor. Many cars of the late 90s performed poorly in this test even after receiving 4 or 5 stars in the government crash tests.
With the difference that by now you don't want a "Good" rating, you want a 5 star rating (NCAP that is).
Car safety has improved dramatically over the last 10 years, if you buy the correct car, of course. It's very reassuring to now that basic models nowadays are safer than middle/top model cars from just 7-10 years ago.
I want an older passat just so i can break it

Actually, it depends on the testing mode.
If you look historically, the Japanese recently had a lot of 5 stars because their earlier designs didn't perform good.
Out of the American brands, Ford is probable the one who has the best NHTSA ratings for the longest.
