Do you know how many stars in NCAP crash test ??

  • omg this is a total disaster.... and i have vw passat from 1992 :|

  • @studiogold maybe you should change it or just quit driving haha

  • VW Passat 2006 model won the IIHS awards..i think bad performance during the 90s and 80s is important because it get those car maker to make safer car today.. but car maker like dodge should be revoked from making cars bcoz their 2005 dodge neon still crashes like cars made in the 80s.

  • VW ASSat

  • @ArticMuse You forgot the pASSat! :P

  • German cars not reliable? Do you live outside Europe?

  • It has a 4 star rating by EuroNCap. The 5th star is assigned for pedestrian protection that wasnt that "fashionable" back in `98 ! ! ! So for the passengers the car offers maximum protection !!!!! Its one of the safest cars around ! ! ! !

  • yeah, your right, the previous model (35i and facelift) were much better in quality, this model here got developed with audi and shared many parts with the a4...

  • IT GOT A GOOD RATING YOU RETARDS!

  • disappointing, but atleast it manages to be better than the 97 Mercedes E-class

  • how many stars?

  • like the brilliance bs6

  • no its not

  • Ouch? didn't expect the old Passat to be such a softie

  • anzex IS right mathaf@ckers...volvo s40 from 1997 has 4 stars (Front:12, Side:14)

    vw passat has 3 stars (Front:8, Side:11)

before you hit the fucking "thumbs down" button read the fucking comment first and check it out...you might actually learn something

  • Dude, shuttup f**king faggot, car safety nerd.

  • dudddddeeeeeeeeeeee

  • volvo v40/s40 from 1997 is safer than this

  • an airbag saved my life

  • its better than the 2001-04 ford f150 crash test lol

  • better since 2001 :crash-test "point"org

  • I have one of the last B5 models made, from 2001. Does anyone know if they made any safety improvements from '98-'01? I know this is a good rating but they could have made it even better over the years hopefully.

  • i only know that the quality improved in the 98 or 99 models, the car was built since 1997

  • Ok, thank you..

  • Is it the B5?

  • yup

  • Does anyone know the crash test speed?

  • I think 60 km/h

  • 40 MPH or 64 KM/H

  • y do all vw hav crap crash test results

  • Actually, it did good in this test, especially for its time

  • @alexkvaskov Explain it to driver's family..

  • for ten years ago that's excellent

  • well you go and try it then

  • fuck! i have a passat van that collour! shame, i love that car too much to smash it

  • this car was 4 star rated

  • I used to have a Subaru Impreza, now I own a 98 Passat. I feel like I'm in a tank compared to the old car which was more like being in a tin can. It feels a lot safer, I don't know much about crash test ratings, but I'm guessing this holds up pretty well?

  • this looks like a 2 star rating. the face lifted one has 3. i also own a ford ka which also has 3 stars and i can tell you it does a lot better than this passat. and for the stupid americans: your cars are crappy. although new ones have improved slightly, they still: handle like shit, have poor quality build and use up tons of fuel.

  • you have a ford ka dont let your cat arround it type in ford ka cat on youtube and u will see

  • I own the 2003 model of passat. the facelifted version. of course that one performs a lot beter than this one. this was a good car, but it had design flaws. notice the drivers head strike the central pillar and the front pillar being bent sharply.

  • Quoting darkjedi3000

"I own the 2003 model of passat. the facelifted version. of course that one performs a lot beter than this one."

Actually. IIHS rated the two cars the same. Look at the video of the facelifted model, the A-Pillar also deforms in the same way as the B5 model. That is not exactly a bad thing, because the crash energy is diverted away from the passenger compartment while maintaining much of the needed interior space.

  • 4 star.

  • Death...

  • Volkswagen built the best cars in the 90's only look at the mercedes e class crash test from 98 or the c class as well they did perform way poorer. Also ever heard of Procon-ten? that was a safety system of audi (also vw group) that tore the steering weel away from the drivers head with steel wires go search fo it.

  • German ! the best in the world and no body can tell the opposite

  • Yep. Quality, safety, luxury, reliability, great looks... What more could you want?

  • i agree with u on most points except reliability. VW is average 4 that now

  • Aah crap, has VW reduced the quality of their cars? They used to be massively reliable.

  • there is a difference between build quality and interior quality (vw is good at) and reliabilty at which the have became average.

i do admire there good design skills but my family have owned 2 VW products. the facelift version of this passat and the SEAT LEON. I still like both cars but japanese cars we previously had gave no problems like these did although jap cars dont feel as special

  • yeah, that's true

  • @Travellinghobo2

That is because they were shit boxes in the past. Wheels, body and some seats. AC, power windows etc was hardly found on those cars thus nothing could break.

  • My 03 jetta has a 4 star crash test yeah vw all the way

  • Now that's what you call german quality

  • ouch!! that hurts

  • Stupid redneck, american cars are (besides being a fucking junk in everything else) a freaking death trap. If you buy an american car, you know you gonna die if you happen to have an accident, you want to be safe, buy a german vehicle. You are a poor fuck and can't afford a german car? buy something else...

  • american cars are not death traps, (note i would never buy them i only buy honda's) but they are not all bad, some are.not all.most.

  • well first off all japanese vehicles are at the top of the chart. believe it or not bmw is doing very shitty job recently. the horrible crash tests results for 6 and 5 series was on yahoo home page just a little while ago. ps. amarican cars are not that far off neither..and they are continuously improving.

  • gooziddeaiejoon,

Actually, it depends on the testing mode.

If you look historically, the Japanese recently had a lot of 5 stars because their earlier designs didn't perform good.

Out of the American brands, Ford is probable the one who has the best NHTSA ratings for the longest.

  • @mirkogardilcic

If you get a brand new Suburban which got the highest IIHS crash test rating then you`re really safe.

  • For its age (about 10 years), it performs very good.

  • VW's are good. This car is 10 years old now, it was good for 10 years ago. This accident would not have been fatal.

  • my brother has one of these passats and he says this crash test is succesful.look at the man in the car he is gonna die 90 persent.I hope he is not gonna crash anywhere like this.

  • the old vw's performed poorly, but the new ones are among the best nowadays.

  • Too bad the engineering isn't.

  • LOL!! chknbro, you are fucked up if you think that the idiotic Neon performs better than this.

  • lick my but

  • No thanks,lol

  • It's shabby performance is because it is quite old, 1998, for gosh sakes!

  • actually vws perform well, you should see the new ones' crashes

  • The IIHS rated it "Good", VWs are safe because they are good quality German cars.

  • go to the iihs website and look at the crash test details

  • vw cars are fine i was cut off going 35 and with no brake collided head on into the other guy and i got up and walked out of the car unharmed.

  • yes, that's what i'm trying to say, VWs are not bad, they are great, actually

  • deffinately

  • Okay, here's the final proof:

All Jetta IIIs except the 1994 Jetta GLX VR6 were built in Mexico.

All Jetta IVs except the wagons were built in Mexico, INCLUDING the Wolfsburg Edition.

All Jetta Vs are built in Mexico except some for China.

  • Im really sorry, I was pissed off that day about what people say about the car I love! I never realised they were assembled in Germany as I was told they were of Mexican origion and Iridium725 is correct however about the electrical problems (sorry again about flying off the handle) my one had an electrical problem today - The ABS, EPS and Brake Fluid lights came on (I've the car since June only)

  • not very safe

the latest passat made much better

  • I think this is the one built in China (no joke they do make Vdubs in China) that explains the poor quality.

  • any proof ? earlier cars are not as good as newer cars.

  • Im not saying its new or old, Im just saying its built in China so its quality is alot cheaper. I dont mean to offend the chinese, but if we look at the Mexican Jetta, they have alot of electrical problems and break down alot, yet the European ones seem to have no problems

  • Really ?! have a look at some other crash car test of this period ie Mercedes E class ,Now that is NOT made in China. The truth is car crash safty are not as good as todays' standards, regarding faults with cars even BENTLY have problems with their wheel nuts,Italian car are well know for their shitty electrics,Ford and Vauxhall(GM) the less said the better. If you think VW would allow sub-standard cars to be made you are very mistaken.

  • No offence but you are wrong abou the Jetta, they are all made in Mexico including the European models and they do NOT break down alot. You must be thinking of the first batch of American ones that were 'faulty'. They have since been improoved

  • I aim afraid to blow you dreams but all European jetta's of this era were made in Wolfsburg along with the golf 3 because it was the same floor plan. And I should know as I work there on the production line. And the 2007 jetta is made in a sister factory in Slovenia

  • Well i shouldnt have said break down..but they do have electrical problems.

  • It is not made in china, China made the longer passat, 93mm longer than this one, chinese passat is same as Skoda supeb, very same.

  • It's really funny when all the kids say "whoa, what a piece of crap" when they see the roof bend or something. What the hell do you expect from a car from 1997/98? Five stars? Only one car at that time managed to gain 4 stars.

  • anası sikildi herifin

  • piece o shit

  • Consider the damage this car had it was a bad result. In the euroncap this car received 3 stars in 98 ,the 2001 model has 4 and the late model 5 stars wich means it's very safe. so this model isn't too much safe.

  • Wow, I would have expected a passat to hold up better.

  • This car received a "Good" rating, and the rating system hasn't changed over the years. Given that there was a low risk of injury in this test, it would still be given a "Good" rating. But it's rare that the roof pillar on newer cars buckles in that fashion.

  • nah man, the passats werent doing so well over the 90's only the 2001 had received 4 stars and the latest model keeps improving i think they rated the 2006-2007 model passat a 5 star, so the newest model is really safe

  • You're thinking of the 30 mph government crash tests. The test in the video is the 40 mph IIHS offset crash test, which is much more demanding on the structure/safety cage. The IIHS rates cars on a scale of Good/Acceptable/Marginal/Poor. Many cars of the late 90s performed poorly in this test even after receiving 4 or 5 stars in the government crash tests.

  • lol thanks for the corrections

  • With the difference that by now you don't want a "Good" rating, you want a 5 star rating (NCAP that is).

Car safety has improved dramatically over the last 10 years, if you buy the correct car, of course. It's very reassuring to now that basic models nowadays are safer than middle/top model cars from just 7-10 years ago.

  • very bad!!!

  • why do u drive a shitty modndeo or summit

  • Why can't they do this to... Hmm... Every Passat ever made? I hate those cars!

  • why? :(

  • Not really, but its better than Pontiac Transport. I think this was normal in 1998. In 2006 this would be poor.

  • It did get a rating of "good" from IIHS, so yep it does!

  • does that mean that it's safe?
