i know what you mean and in that point you're right with that theory... but i think more in a bambaataa-way... it should bring people together. that was my point actually...
haver heard/read lots of stuff about that social thing in detroit! terrible!
@normloman yeah, ironic considering the Detroit techno originators were influenced by white European electronic pop - Kraftwerk, Moroder, Gary Numan etc
@bboysattherave. which when you listen past the synthetics, the structure was itself influenced by the r&b & funky riffs of sly and the family stone, brown, parliament, etc.
@DJmixmastermicro Today's techno is not techno, is electro or minimal, the real european techno was produced mainly in Belgium and netherland in 1989-1995, but it wouldn't exist without the influence of detroit and EBM.
@DJmixmastermicro "white europeans" was quiet unnecessarely... even though i think you're right... most of that "techno" is whack... far away from that true shit!
@ZEANski. the music is great, but it doesnt exist in a neutral vaccum. there are cultural, ethnic, economic realities behind this music. the fact is in detroit, racism was/is a factor. go ask the detroit techno originators like may or atkins.
Don't know exactly what white european artists do you listen to, but I know some modern techno tracks, that are similar to this, and thank god for this :)
The early 80's were the best time for music, period: Detroit Techno, House music, early rap, HC/Punk, the beginnings of indie rock, the formation of dancehall stylee, industrial. Just so much good stuff happening all at one time....
my neighbor (and sister's best friend back then) was a dancer on this show. toni makuch (spelling?). i remember it was on around dinner time and the whole family would often tune in while we ate.only in detroit. no place like it.and i hope that someday we all start moving back!
@deadmau5suckz Deamau5 wouldn't even exist if it weren't for people like Juan Atkins. To appreciate current 'dance music' as we know it, you must also look to the past, to the people that created it. I'm fairly certain that even Deadmau5 would beg to differ with you... ;)
I'm a music teacher in the public school system and when I played this track as a dance-off for my 5th graders today (3/2/2011), the whole class went crazy over it! True techno never dies...
Little did they know that what they were dancing to was the future, even now we are a long way off modern dance music being anywhere near as visionary as that.
@shatterprone If you watch closely, or if you're from Detroit and danced this way, you'll see that it really is in time! check the hard popping at 3:38-4:12 or so. The hard pops hit right on beat! Some dancers wer just playing it real smooth, and you couldn't really tell that they were on beat, but they were!
@mta415 Yes, this is indeed "The Scene", a local Detroit dance show which aired in the 70s and 80s. I grew up watching it religiously, and this clip really brings back memories! "Moonman" aired in DC and Baltimore. I don't think Detroit techno was played on that show, probably a lot of Go-Go though...
@citizencain01 being from the D as well I watched the Scene daily unless I had football practice (Cooley High School), I met Nat Morris in the late 80's in the airport, seemed pretty cool.
Excellent upload..I am still in awe of some of the dance moves..beats standard 'arms in the air' waving..;-)..as the person says below...'Everything about this video is beautiful'...
This is classic!! Shout out to Sylvia, one of my favorite dancers!! I wish you could find some scene episodes when they were doing Rap-A-Dance and SPX-90 (Gumby Live) was performing... That's the rap group I was in..

I don't get it - do they really dance to that track or is it an overdub?
shatterprone 1 year ago
@shatterprone Can't you hear all that noise in the background? That's what they're actually dancing to.
Caprice87 1 year ago 2
@Caprice87: actually I was wondering BECAUSE of the live sound and the group dance moves, which are nowhere near synchronous to the music!
And it`s not impossible to overdub the original music and still maintain some of the crowd noise, at least at this low level of sound quality.
But you`re probably right, anyway.
