  • With two year of delay but...what the hell, this is such a cool and instructive video that it always deserves a thumb up. ; )

  • Thanks that was an insane lesson!!! much love xxx

  • Please put up more videos on vocal harmony so that you can reach into your instrumentalist audience base!

  • Really interesting - and very useful. Thank you!

  • JB,

Thank you for keeping the Clark Burroughs-Gene Puerling vision of what voices can do alive. You are a gifted musician and arranger. I wish you only the very best in what I greatly hope will be a great career.

  • Excellent stuff man

  • This is awesome man! Can you make more videos for different types of progressions? I've been arranging a cappella songs for a while and want to get into more jazzy arrangements. :)

  • GREAT job here. I imagine that you're also into The Four Freshman?

I've always been intrigued by ..I'm always Chasing Rainbows..

Nobody has tackled this yet .......you might just be the man eh?

search youtube with: The Four Freshmen tour South Dakota and sing "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" check 2:07

  • Try and get your hands on a Phil Mattson arrangement. He's truly the best.

  • Its been while, but here is the remix !

  • wow, this is insanely g o o d. came here looking for an original happy birthday clip fpr a friend and instead of wishing her happy birthday, i been checking out all your videos :-) vous êtes le génie!

  • @playmystringthang haha !! Thank you...

  • That 6 part composition at the end of the video, goes to show that your voice is a finely honed musical instrument. That was so beautiful:)

  • This is deep soul music. We need it. Thanks!

  • @gilouseb I have heard deeper soul than this you should hear Take 6 or Glad! Those guys are awesome! This however is very informative and helps to actually explain what you are hearing! So good job to the maker of this! I would actually like to do that myself!

  • @Jonjonathanmark

Thanks! That's quite a good piece of advice, for I know and listen to Take 6 for only a little bit more than 20 years...It doesn't prevent me from enjoying soul in JB Craipeau's arrangements and music.

  • @gilouseb HA HA! Oh shoot! Well there you go!

  • That was really neat, especially seeing the Hi-lo's version. It was right on the money. This is one of the best youtube clips I have found.

  • J-B, You are clearly the daddy when it comes to "a capella", Have you or any of your friends considered doing the business on David Raskin's " Laura" ?.

It's a beautiful song. the four Freshmen do it fine but I reckon that their improvosations on it could be extended to a higher level of cool if you were to work on it.

Hey, but what do I know, you are the singer, I'm only a fan.

  • Your music seems influenced by the Singers Unlimited and by Boyz to Men. It's really tasty stuff!

  • @MrGWHLevy Take 6 most, then Singers Unlimited, Hi-lo's, real group etc. But Boyz II Men ?? not at all =)

  • Graaaacias por subir esta informacion musical;estoy totalmente agradecido.Thank JB Craipeau. Saludos.

  • fuck! my mind is blown

    aaaaaaaarghhhhhh

    INCREDIBLE

  • NUTTER :O)

I'm going to learn to read music again!! Check out my page please.

  • Dude, this video was off the hook! You have such a vast musical knowledge, it's absurd! I have difficulties writing one version, you can write like 10 different versions :). Amazing skills!! Kudos

  • amazing, thanks

  • this is crazy wao this guy is an animal wao! am screaming

  • The 2nd is the best ;)

  • @Jollofloff I agree. 2nd is the best. :-D

em três quatro ou mais partes?

  • Fantastic!!! Give us more classes and thank you sooooooo very much!!Merci!!!!!

  • this is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you oh so much, that's a gorgeous teaching video!!! Keep it up!

  • Does Take 6 think about all of this theory when they arrange or do they just issue parts they hear?

  • @ifiwereu - Probably a combination of both. Those guys (Cedric and Mervyn in particular) have VERY strong music backgrounds in performance/theory. Mervyn has a B.A in music with a piano emphasis and a Masters in music theory/arranging. Cedric is a professor of music/composition with a B.A. in Vocal Music Education, Masters in Music Theory/Arranging, and a Doctorate in Music Theory. Claude has played trombone from his youth. I believe David plays the piano as well. I heard they all play keyboard.

  • @ifiwereu well, Cedric Dent has a Ph. D. in music theory. One of the original members, Mervyn Warren has a masters in music, Claude McKnight plays the trombone, and Mark Kibble does a great deal of their arranging. So they are certainly accomplished musicians as well as vocalists and I'm sure that they incorporate a great deal of theory into what they do.

My thinking is that there are VERY few people who can hear complex harmonies without having any kind of knowledge of the theory behind it.

  • @jazzsingerlady The fact that these guys have recognizable credentials does not dismiss the fact that music is an art. Such sounds from the perspective of the performer/artist, in many cases have no theoretical basis. I say this to say that, much of what Mervyn did was what he could hear. If you heard his first album called "A special Blend", you would not relegate so much to theory. Mark listened a lot to the Singers Unlimited and Gene Puerling and Big Band sounds...I went to school with them

  • @ifiwereu well, of course both of our perspectives are our opinions, I just can't imagine that they would have theoretical knowledge (which they do) and not put it to use. Even if a person has natural talent (which they do), having at least a basic knowledge of music theory can only help give them more of a vocabulary.

Oh, and I've been a student of the "Special Blend" album for most of my life. You can test me- I can sing every part of every song and I'll promise you I'd be accurate.

  • OH yeah! thanx a lot for this! DENGGGGG awesome!!!

  • i like three cause im a bass!!

  • Thanks! it is real useful! love the combination that you attempt ( fifth example)

I love Yumiko Matsuko too, tried her "over the rainbow" hahah.. it painstakingly beautiful

  • Thanks! it is real useful! love the combination that you attempt ( fifth example)

  • All of them was pretty cool, but the 8. I think it really sucks, hahaha. But all the anothers was freaking great :D

  • I love the second chords with dissoance because I love dissonance!

    XD.

It makes me shiver and the feeling it gives me is amazing.

    You create it so well!

You really should just make a video full of dissonance.

    ^_^'.

  • thanks for the great tutorial!!!

  • What a killer video! I've done some 4 part arranging, and being the Four Freshmen/Hi-Lo's fan that I am, I have a particular fondness for the II V I with the natural 9 moving to the b9, and then the 5th. Great singing and ideas!

  • take6 take6

  • Way cool. You're a vocal jazz hero!

  • amazing to think such rich chords are achieved with only 5 voices! Explains the power of the 6th voice in Take 6! Excellent stuff, JBC.

  • Very cool, John! We miss you at Jazz Choir. Since November I've been playing/singing 4 nights a week on the East Side; come sing with me!---Annie

  • this is amazing!!!! i really want to do some jazz arranging this is a great help my fave is 2!

  • I though this will sound like a ridiculous comment but... I'm speechless!

    J'en suis bouche bée!!

    Beau bonjour du Québec! §:c)

  • Wow, this sounds really amazing and the best part is: I learn something from the video, which I can keep, take it to my home and put it in on the shelf.

  • what about the arranger Phil Mattson...didn't see him on the list :)

Love what you did on this. :)

  • @kallaloo1 yes, I could have added him too =)

  • @jibcraip Wonderful examples of good jazz vocal writing! You are such an inspiration to all who dig great vocal sounds. I am writing some thing for you!

    Sascha Burland

  • Love it Love it - shows you did your homework JB!

Some modal parallel motion would have been nice...

Sounds amazing! Thanks for putting in the time to do this!

  • @AndrewKesler cool ! I'm glad you like it...It took me some hours to put that powerpoint file on iMovie...lolol

  • @jbcraipeau I don't suppose you could take that powerpoint file and dump it to a PDF...? It's easier jumping around if someone (me) is trying to learn a thing or two. Nice stuff.

  • a fun man!

  • Great study! I will be practicing these voicings...
