  • Such a legend with an effortless stroke :)

  • Thorpe -> Phelps -> Lochte is the progression. Thorpe was the best from 2000 to 2004, Phelps from 2004 to 2008, and now it's Lochte's time.

  • @pranalad

    yeah that's about right, it's exciting :)

  • @pranalad Id say phelps 2004 - 2010 then Lochte dominated him

  • @pranalad Dont make me laugh, Michael Phelps is the best ever, he broke Thorpe's 200m freestyle record with a textile suit and have a lot of diffrent event he can swim, and swim on a world record time. And i rather say this: Thorpe was the best from 1999~2002, and then its really was all about Michael Phelps.

  • No incentive to get in 3:40

  • For most of sport, the top player need other competitor to chase him, unfortunately, in Thorpe's era, it seems that he is alone. So no incentive for him.

  • He went 3:40.59 age 17. How did he never break 3:40? He could still have this record.

  • @adamlewis934 dude u dont understand he was in his peak from 2000-2001 people wil argue with that but he didnt break the 400 or 200 world records at teh 2003 wc or the 2004 oympics.

  • @EthanBranden I fully understand he was at his peak from 2000-2001. All I said was that it's a very early age to peak.

  • Thorpe is simply the best

  • Love the full bodysuit!

  • thorpe and popov : the greatest ever

  • @guspopov you' re right

  • Assuming ian, who was superhuman, didnt participate in this competition, then Rossolino would have made a great gold medal, i mean he really was ahead of the others. evident that he trained really hard to get the medal.

  • LOL 4:24 the guy that finished in 2nd place was more excited than thorpe

  • @borre619 it was not a guy, it was massimiliano rossolino. i think that for all those who competed against ian, they knew the race was not for first place but for second, ian was undefeatable.

  • the leggend swimmer

  • I wish they the full body suits werent outlawed cause i would be using them every swim meet i go to XD

  • hard to believe I'm now a year older than he was here...

  • in this event Rosolino lost the opportunity to set a WR in his carrier... he deserved it! unfortunatly there was a man called Ian Thorpe...

  • @thesnatch88 Rosolino did NOT deserve something like that. He and nearly the entire ITalian Olympic team in all sports were on steroids. It was proven when they were caught a couple months after the Games but not investigated further. The Italians had a surprisingly great Olympics in many sports, not just swimming. Anyway Rosolino is not some historic swimmer. He won silver in this event since Hackett swam badly, Klim chose not to swim it, and Van Den Hoogeband chose not to swim it.

  • @grafgirl27 maybe you'd have to think before writing... Rosolino is one of the most successful swimmer of all time with his 60 INTERNATIONAL MEDALS. so show more respect for him and all the italian team... i only think that the gap between rosolino and the rest (thorpe excluded) was so deep that he deserved to set the WR, not only the ER! but probably the fact that you mention Van Den Hoogeband and Klim as really competitive in 400, shows that probably you don't know anything about swimming...

  • Such a graceful response to the win; mere 'thank you' to the sky.

  • ok thanks i need a couple of inches more.. There is this product named " helpo growth formula" it works for me hopefully l'll hit 6ft4

  • what's the ideal height for swimming?

  • @TheLeilisa 6'2-6'6 the msot common is 6'4

  • what a magically time in Australian Swimming!

  • master of the freestyle

  • with an x-glide, the thorpedo would have gone sub 3:40 easy

  • Channel 7 would have to be very very unpatriotic to ask you to take this off youtube man... Its a major event in australian sporting history.

  • when you consider that the second placed swimmer tested positive it ends up being up about 20 metres to the next finisher, its just not right

  • hes so damn good and he doesnt even look like hes trying. and only 17!!

  • ian thorpe is a god

  • DAY 1!!! Ian Thorpe is number 1!!! a kick start for Australia!!!!

  • with the new suts (2010) biderman can be happy if he does 3:44 or 3:45

  • @gusyrocks Biedermann sucks without high tech Polyurethane suits. watch how bad he is without them now just watch 2012 olympics he wont beat any records

  • @DarthMuse its pretty difficult for someone to go from someone at that level to go from 1:47 in melbourne 2007 to a 1:42 in 2009

  • Thorpe was a monster in this race. The story was not whether he would win this gold, but by how many lengths.

  • and later that same night he swam the anchor leg in the 4x100 relay and helped the aussies topple the United States!!!

  • i realy like thorpe cause of hes person, and biedermann for he honest. maybe hes none of them are the fastest i cant say so but they tell the truth

  • Massi 'HGH' Rosolino

  • I love Michael Phelps, no doubt, but Thorpe's technique just seems so much smoother. Turns however, Phelps takes.

  • Thorpe is unbelievably graceful in and out of the water. Phelps might be the GOAT but I can never get tired of watching Thorpe's technique

  • @d517q7 i agree wholeheartedly. thorpes finess and power look as though he's actually part fish

  • bieddermann doesnt deserve this record

  • He know's he doesn't, he even said after his race the suit probably took of 2 to 4 seconds. Although I wanted Thorpes record to survive the suit sega, I think Biedermann is the most honest person and deserved the record more than anyone currently swimming.

Thorpe didn't mind either, he even said it wasn't all about the suit.

  • agreed, that bitch did it with a tech suit

  • @mikemrvp man, thorpe was using a suit all over his body ecept his head...this is a very fast suit too..im not saying that it's faster than biedermann's suit, but it's not very slower...0.5 seconds and less..

  • @Gat0ni1996

u made no fucking sense man.

  • @mikemrvp tech suit imporves swimmers perforances by hundredths of a second... he smashed that record by over a second. dosnt sound like much but thats a huge difference.

  • @wolfdog45 yah use high tech Polyurethane suits.

  • @wolfdog45 so did phelps and biedermann just copy the style? roids?i dont get it. thorpe is pre perfect. wish he still held the record

  • @wolfdog45

Thorpe verdient diesen Rekord genauso wenig. Thorpe hat solang Pillen gefressen bis seine Füße groß genug waren um schnell zu schwimmen. Doping in Reinkultur. Wie's halt bei australischen Schwimmern schon seit Jahren üblich ist

  • @24Florian what?

  • @wolfdog45

maybe he doesnt want to have it, because his own is better:-)

  • Holy shit he was only 17 when he did this?! Woah!

  • @littlezdawg2012 nope. 17. shite. damn quick.

  • Thanks!!! thanks for the video!!

  • andy bairdon is so much enthused :-) Great stuff, Ian

  • Jesus, size 18 feet........DAMN

  • Ian Thorpe was smiling before he finished ! haha !

  • Legend. Best middle distance swimmer ever.

  • considering the commentators in beijing were going crazy when phelps was a body length ahead by 75 in the 200, thorpe being a body length after 45 in the 400 is even more remarkable.

  • I hate how biased they are

  • @redskinsfreak614 Oh come on. They're Australian commentators calling a race being won by an Australian swimmer at an Olympics held in Australia. Of course they're a bit biased! How could one not be biased in those circumstances?

  • great video
