WOW its amazing what you can find on youtube.......growing up on everything SAW this was a cool recreation and brought back alot of memories......i think ill spend a few days listening to all those 12" singles i collected as a teenager. I wonder where that great trio are now? For me they ruled my 80s and 90s music collection :)
I always hated their cheezey generic sound. The only productions of their's that were tasteful were the records they made for PRINCESS "After the love has gone" & "Say I'm your number one"
This is great, if it was 1989 I wld for sure hire you, but wld like to sound more loike " THe Freemasons " now day's ie, The One Freemasons Kylie Mix.. Nice set up BTW
I don't understand how layering 4 DX7 sounds (triggered via midi?) would work - surly that would just make the same sound louder as they are digital and each perfectly in tune? Or are they 4 different bass patches...?
@digitalnativedance of course i'm not using 4 exactly the same patches, but they ARE similar, the one has a better click, and the other a better grunge to it.
And there is DETUNE on them, so even with 4 exactly the same patches you CAN benefit from layering them and detuning them to create more warmth.
@digitalnativedance I think so, because it's easy to make a good bass sound on the dx7 but to give it that puchy attack sound is very difficult to program.
So a sample or another dx sound would be the obvious thing to lively up the bass sound.
Oh man.. hehe. I hated this sound back then and things aint changed in that regard. Still as awful a sound as ever. No disrespect to you.. good authentic PWL sound.
@SuperWhitenights lol what? So you like Westlife and JLS do you? Sales in Pop music rarely means it's any good. Music is subjective so if I say I don't like something that's ok.
@Hitquarters As you should hear the drumsound is Oberheim DMX, no 909 here.
I've got 2 Linn 9000's here, but i wasn't trying to replicate the sounds exactly, otherwise i would have.
This was something that just "happened" while programming a TX802 for some SAW bass sounds.
Most of the SAW "Linn 9000" sounds by the way are NOT the original 9000 sounds, but SAMPLES of other drum machines and other sounds loaded into the 9000, it is also a drum sampler.
I could quite happily live in your studio forever.
Great job on this sound. I've got a TX802 myself and im always stumbling on great sounds. If you quite liked the D50, you might want to check out the Yamaha SY-99. Sounds really amazing, and is quite a beast. But to truly unleash its power you'll benefit from delving deeper into programming it, or you're missing out.
Nice stuff, right on the mark. Stereo image is superb, too. And as usual, your studio is envy-making to the max.
I know you don't like digitals, but you might try a JD-800. It's got a similar sound to the D-50. But it has more fidelity without sounding digital, and it has excellent controls.
@calyx93 Correct... I'm too lazy to do more effort.
I'm missing the strings too, but the basics are there..
I was programming a TX802 DX7 rack-unit and thought, hey let's make that SAW bass.
Soon i found myself with this, and thought it would be nice to share my findings.
I bought a Roland D50 just for this experiment (i'll keep it though, i am a collector of classic synthesizers and normally i wouldn't keep a digital synth, but this one is pretty nice actually.
Reverse-engineering and reconstruction of famous songs is the excellent practice. once you know how THEY did it, you can easily materialize your stuff directly from brain
@BigLesbowski i like your comment about the brain. No doubt the reverse-engineering demands some time but to adjust the brain to materialize a hit... what, who , where did you say we should adjust ? ;-)

This simple experiment has passed, watch my video "new disco record" for my own music using the PWL bassdrum and hi-hat.
It is featured at my channel's opening page.
Thanks!

@karelpostthuis Ah, i see. Do you know if this was often done in SAW / late '80s productions?

Nice to hear, only SAW unique drumbeats came from a Linn 9000 not from a Roland TR 808 or 909

The only thing you're missing are some sequenced percussive/staccato PPG Wave chords and the famous Fairlight Orch5 orchestra hit sample.
