My mom used to play this very song, this very arrangement to me a lot when I was a baby and child. I never knew who did it. I heard other people do it but this was the one I was looking for. Thank you for posting. This IS a masterpiece.
@floanito (em português): Eu sou um alto-falante Inglês e essa música é bonita para ouvir em ambos Português e Inglês. a música é bela em todas as línguas :)
(in english): i'm an english speaker and this song is beautiful to listen to in both portuguese and english. music is beautiful in all languages :)
I adore this and have for decades. My only complaint is in trying to force the English translation, when Astrud sings it, the awkward ungrammatical rhyme : not at he instead of him. Still wish for a better lyric there. Picky, I know! ;-)
Well, it's "poetic license": when writing poems or songs, it's permissible to be ungrammatical if necessary to make the verses rhyme. :)
BTW, The English verses aren't "forced translation". The song originally only had the Portuguese verses; the English verses, totally different from the Portuguese verses, were added later. Both verses are in their original languages. I think the English verses were originally male first-person, so grammatical "not at me" instead of "not at he".
This is still the best version of this song ever recorded! So sad there's no video of them recording this. The fine details are amazing! Cheers to the masters!

@rovingeye2 When I first uploaded this song, in 2009, I did it because I couldn't find it on Youtube. I wonder what motivated you to upload it again.

I love it - the guitar and sax are great - the singing is kind of fragile and understated but fits in with the music beautifully.

Mio padre suonava il sax e, quando ero piccola, mi parlava di Stan Getz e di tutta la musica che veniva dalle Americhe...
Così, quando lo ascolto, mi commuovo...
