I catch this tune on some late Sunday nite a.m. Blues show coming back to texas via Arkansas, all static- y as hell . Been looking for this Cat for a few years, all the time waving this song as my flag. Wish like hell I could have seen him./ glad as hell to find out his name and be able to check out his other stuff.
The Blues continue to bless my soul! RIP Big Man. thanks for the groove.
@nikkiespage......Agreed I remember him at the Key Largo....I bought "The Other One" Had him sign it and gave it to my cousin (Drummer) in MT . And also still great but there will always be a void at The Warterfront Blues Festival with out him there.
Nothing like music in the Portland area during the 60's 70's and 80's! Was very lucky to see some amazing musicians including Paul - almost any night of the week.
Just so you know, up there in heaven, we all had a great time at this years blues festivals and you are truly missed, I hear it from all over the place, How great of a harp player/singer you are and Paul you will never be forgotton, thanks for your humour too! We miss you.
Thanks for all the great music, Paul. I have a copy of the Northwest Tribute to Ray Charles CD that you signed. I got everyone to sign it, but you asked for my name and asked about me. And you put my name on it, then signed yours. I took one kid to see you, but you were gone before I could take my other kid to see you. You've influenced two generations of music lovers in my house. Hope you're blowing endless harp with all the greats right now.
In 2003 (maybe 04) I flew from Philly to the Port Townsend Blues Fest outside Seattle. I went to see one band, one man. Frankly, I was worried he'd die before I met him. My brother and I found the location he'd be playing, sat, drank and waited. About an hour and a half before showtime, Paul walked in.
I introduced myself. For the next hour and a half, Paul and I sat at a table and mused about music and blues in general. I've been a musician for 20 years...it was the highlight of my career.
I had the pleasure of meeting and talking at length with Paul a few years back. A really nice guy and a great talent. One of my favorite all time harp players and blues singers. We will all miss him.
I believe that after a tour, he had not been feeling well. He felt badly enough to check himself into a hospital. At that hospital visit, it was discovered that he had advanced stages of leukemia. He soon lapsed into a coma and died two days later.
thanks for sharing that news..sad as it was..back n the 80s i used to go see his band at the white eagle(?)..always had a great time..living now in NYC & just happened to stumble upon his video & it brought back fond memories of that time..
One of Pauls coolest originals! I cover it myself. He told me the story of how and where he "stoled" or "Copped" the groove! He was a great guy and a monster when it came to 3rd position! I basically learned how to play 3rd position from listening to this song! Paul will be sorely missed. Sincerely, Bent Reed
