As a fan of the great Donald F, and a fellow musician with ears like tuning forks, Mr Reichbart, you have got this simply perfect. The chords and voicings are true and beautiful. The whole song is captured with a warm heart, and played deliciously. A demonstration in near perfection. My hat is on the floor.
Brilliant guitar work!! Maxine was my favorite Donald Fagen. I tried to understand its chords and each voicing again and again, but it was so complicated that I could not do it. Thank you for posting!!
Thanks! Boy, I wish I could come but I don't have any kind of organization to put such a trip together (arranging gigs, hotels, etc.). Perhaps you could do it...?
Thank you for all your very nice comments! I will be in France late July in the Perigueux area and will have a few gigs, stop by...Also, while these SD videos are ok, please look at some of my more recent videos for much better sound/video quality. Thanks!
Absolutely gorgeous. I wish I had studied and practiced harder in my 50+ years of playing. This is awe-inspiring....and at the same time, for me, very depressing.
Thank you for the very kind words! And not to be so cold as to turn a nice compliment into a sales pitch, but I do have a remedy for your depression... ;-) a real nice DVD guitar lesson showing how I play this arrangement and much more. Please let me know if interested and thanks again!
oh my....there's magic in this....I remember listening to this song on the highway, night...getting closer to the city..heat on in the car...being lulled into this dreamy space, floating at that sparkling horizon. I forgot that moment until now, finding this video...thank you, Jake...really....perhaps I'll visit the instructional video, but for now, I think it's time to listen again..
Hey keep at it don't give up. I brought a couple of Jake's DVD's & it has improved my playing in only a matter of months. All the old stuff I use to play is now so easy I have jazzed them all up. I feel its not the years you put in - its the quality of the learning and even taking small steps at a time playing with quality in mind will set you apart from what you had done before. Keep at least one guitar, invest in a DVD from Jake & in two months it will be like one year, Adam from New Zealand.
sorry i'm late to the party but just ran across your video of MAXINE. great stuff. it's one of my favorite fagen songs but never heard it that way. you are truly blessed. be well my friend.
I have alwais been interested in this tune, but I tougth it was too difficult to arrange for guitar, maintaining the original sound; but you've done it. I thougth the same with Jaret's "My song", but Methny has done a very good cover in "Une quiet nigth"...
Thank you! I use the regular pickup on the Ibanez AG75 through a Yamaha DG Stomp preamp direct to the computer for 99% of the sound. I also have a Fishman transducer piezo pickup on the bridge for a little extra brightness.
One of the most beautiful songs in the world, by the greatest living 20th century American composer (imo anyway)...done beautifully, as usual in your own way.
Thanks so much! From my Youtube profile: "Thanks for asking about TAB's! Unfortunately, all my arrangements are in my head and as I come from jazz, they are not even exactly the same every time I play them. So no, I don't have any TABs for the moment. The only way for me to share my arrangements is either a private lesson, seminar/class or video lesson which I am wiling to try for a fee. Please let me know if you are interested." Thanks again!
Hey again Jake. Have you ever heard of Tuck Andress? He's a great fingerstyle jazz musician. Also, I would love to hear you some more on youtube. Be safe!
Of course! As I mention in my profile, Tuck Andress and Joe Pass are my main two influences as far as solo guitar goes, I consider my style a blend of both (if not in quality). I just uploaded "Change The World", check it out. Thanks!
Hello Jake! I recently had the privalage of seeing you perform live at U of M hosptital, with Five Guys Named Moe. You do great guitar work, and I hope to see you perform again sometime soon. Best of luck!
Thanks. I hope you don't have much reason to be at the hospital but i will be back there in the lobby for a solo performance on September 4, 12-1, as well as duo with sax gigs on July 22 and Aug 26 at the cafeteria, lunchtime. Beyond that you can see me at my weekly gigs at The Earle, Eve - The Restaurant and The Whitney in Detroit. Thanks again!
I was at the hospital because I went with my brother for his physical therapy sessions, but he actually wasnt scheduled that day, so as a result, my mother and us were able to see your amazing and fun performance! I have been listening to your Cd with FGNMoe and like the first 3 songs so much I havent been able to move on yet! Thanks for the reply, it means alot coming from a busy guy like you. Hope to see you soon!
I like the idea of playing different guitars. Some of your instruments are interesting. Would be great to hear what you think about each of them in addition to hearing your great playing. Thanks!
Absolutely brilliant. Truly an immense talent. I'm a big guitar fan (the instrument itself i mean) so it would be nice if you played some of your other guitars just to take a look. Do you have any customs? I have one custom acoustic and am working on my second.
Thanks! I have some 25 guitars for different styles of which I use regularly 6-8. I'm focusing for now on solo guitar because I'm in discussions about a cd/book deal in this format and I want to build up my exposure. The other conceivable guitars for this style would be an old Gibson ES175, which actually doesn't sound as nice, and a Godin jazz which sounds great but is very heavy. So for the moment wer'e stuck with the Ibanez. As soon as I add styles you'll see other guitars. Thanks again!
Oh my God Jake-That was absolutely the best ever!! I just love this arr't-beautiful chords etc-lovely runs!!where does it end--thanks mate-your a good friend.
You were one of the first to post nice comments for my videos so i decided to reward you with a song of you choice. Where does it end? Well, it ends for a few days anyway, I have some massive car issues... As soon as that's resolved I hope to resume the videos. Stay tuned!

I have alwais been interested in this tune, but I tougth it was too difficult to arrange for guitar, maintaining the original sound; but you've done it. I thougth the same with Jaret's "My song", but Methny has done a very good cover in "Une quiet nigth"...
