  • Peter Bowles has also played Andrew Wyke and Joe Brown has played Milo Tindle though not in the same production. For me, Oliier & Caine are the quintesential cast and after watching this WONDERFUL movie over 100 times over a period of 30 years it's fascinating to hear that Olivier's original opinion of the play was "a piece of piss!" I prefer to think he was just jealous of Quale and jumped at the chance of being involved in the movie version! Probably my all time favourite movie. Mum ADORED it!

  • Excellent writer - great movie. Well done Tony.

  • as i read the credits, William Lustig co-produced this nice docu. Is it really the same person who directed MANIAC (1980)?

    baffled!

  • Wonderful, truly wonderful account by Shaffer of the making of the original film adaptation of his play 'Sleuth'. Does anyone have the full 23 minute version of this interview? It would be a treat as I never got hold of the DVD where it was featured. Thank you fo this great tetsimony from the late great Anthony Shaffer.

  • What DVD is it from?

  • That was the old 2002 DVD edition from Anchor Bay entertainment, now out of print. The rights to this film are now in the hands of Paramount UK, but the new disc does not have any extras I'm afraid, not even a trailer. Yet it's been fairly well restored, and it's a marvellous piece of overall film work anyway.

  • Thank you very much.

  • These people work in a world of impossible and terribly sensitive egos. They survive, and somehow have fond memories of the whole experience. You can't judge them by ordinary standards
