  • If your gonna carry it concealed then use the medium and or small frame. I personally use the commander's model, med. frame

  • What about the all important factor of being able to CONCEAL it? Thats a big firearm to hide unless you wear super baggy clothing all the time or its always winter. Sure, I'd love to carry .45 all the time but it just isn't practical.

  • "And that's the way it is"... Walter Cronkite anybody?

  • I like the Glock 23. If I ever have to use it, I'm shootin the whole clip.

  • Knockdown shmockdown.

.38 will incapacitate psychologically a target prone to such (even if you miss). .45 will NOT prevent a target jacked on adrenaline, severely emotional or intoxicated with alcohol/drugs from shooting back at you, or using any other deadly weapon unless you score a direct hit to the head.

.40 is the weapon of choice for FBI and cops due to penetration. For conceal carry users gun's mostly a placebo anyhow, pick cheaper ammo which will allow you to practice more.

  • @Cormalek i don't get how the .45 won't stop the person but a .38 will?

  • @Cormalek I don't mean to be rude but obviously do NOT know what your talking about. The .45acp will dominate .38 and .40 any day. The handgun that can come close is the .44 magnum. If you believe talk to someone who has personal experience and or do some serious reading.

  • Even thou i own the 100th anniv rail run i dont carry it. Too big, too heavy, and the b-tail prints any shirt u wear. Ill stick to my colt mustang 380 with jhp

  • @Armory52 wish they still made the mustang

  • Unfortunately, not a very informative video. If they were drawing from a holster for this test it might have some value. Picking the gun up off a table to fire isn't very realistic. I'm also surprised to hear them still using the old phrase "knock down power". The sooner that phrase is left to die the better. We need to get away from people actually thinking a bullet knocks someone down or throws them through a window. Save that for the movies. One shot stop would be a better phrase.

  • @Soulrider2012 Knock down has nothing to do with phsyically making a person fly backwards. It is just a term used to describe a cartridges ability to incapacitate an assailant in one hit.

  • so he got 4 hits in 3 seconds with a 9mm versus 5 hits in three seconds for the .45 1911...

  • Picking up from a table is an excellent idea since it allows the test to compare a variety of weapons; rifles, shotguns, revolvers, and pistols; on a level plane. While pulling your handgun from a holster is more realistic from a concealed carry perspective, rifles and shotguns don't holster well. The comparison here is the firearm, not the concealed carry approach.

  • How about test a compact 1911. Such as a Colt Officers carry 1911?

  • I like Midway USA and their service. Mr. Potterfield seems to be holding the 1911 correctly to best mitigate recoil here and is achieving some excellent hits one handed. In contrast,in the videos he does shooting the Glock 22 and 17, he is not holding the gun with the barrel in line with his forearm, and thus the gun is recoiling in a less controllable manner and he can't shoot it as quickly and still hit the target. Still some good short videos here though and I mean no disrespect..

  • My favorite firearm of all time.

  • why are all of his video's 1.8seconds and the reason you want comment pending is because people would correct your mistakes

  • why are all of his video's 1.8seconds

  • Old school concepts.

  • You are a classic!

  • But its totaly subjective..I just watched like 5 of these and it took him less time to put a round on target with a 1911 than a 92fs..that speaks more to him not being as familiar with the 92. Same for the CZ75..Idk...maybe in just crazy

  • NICE group!

  • 1911 is my favorite pistol. I would rather have one 1911 than a plastic pistol. Good video.

  • 1911 is my favorite pistol. I would rather have one 1911 than a plastic pistol.

  • id rather use a standard 230 grain instead of the 185+p shown here. more velocity doesnt mean more knock down power. its mass + power that does it. and doubt theyre.in colts pocket. they gave the kimber ultra compact a higher score

  • i think the .45 is a really hard concealed carry weapon bc it jabs into your hips when you sit in a vehicle.. i wear more form fitted clothing, not baggy but you cant go wrong with this classic

  • I love midwayusa, but I think there were some categories missing in that evaluation. Any look at a concealed carry weapon should consider size, weight, and magazine capacity, but none of those factors were included.

  • You carry it on a concealed table, cocked and with the safety off. Yeah it's fast, really. Surely the ideal CCW.

  • Why would you fire with just one hand if the other hand is free? And why are we throwing out the detail of the gun being a huge and heavy chunk of steel that's a tad bit difficult to conceal? If that's the case, then why don't we all just carry .44 magnums? Also, aren't those "scores" based on this one guy's performance, which does not indicate anything at all for anyone else? None of this makes any sense.

  • 1,8 sec? for the first shot? It´s a single action. First u have to cock the hammer to shoot. In this vid the hammer was cocked. Did u carry a cocked weapon?

  • 1,8 sec? for the first shot? It´s a single action. First u have to cock the hammer to shoot. In this vid the hammer was cocked. Did u carry a cocked weapon?

  • what is a good , basic, defense of home weapon? I'm not much of a target kind of guy, or anything like that, I'm just looking for plain advise.

  • One thing about this. Your time to the first shot isn't accurate from a conceal carry standpoint because you pick it up, loaded and ready, from a table. You should be drawing the firearm from concealment. Plus, the 1911 is a single action weapon so unless you like carrying cocked & locked then I'd shy away from it. One more thing, the knockdown factor ratings for the ammo used is a bit inaccurate from what I understand. Might need a little more investigation. Is Midway in the pocket of Colt goo

  • @Tower1Podcast yeah youre right man. But what is "Colt goo"?

  • @Tower1Podcast the single action is the only reason why i wont carry a 1911, might as well carry a cowboy revolver

  • @Tower1Podcast Condition one is the only way to carry a 1911, that's the way it was designed - Complete hammer block with both safeties engaged, just as safe as any other pistol. Nothin' like knowing you've got a a cocked and locked GI .45 sittin on your butt! Civilian: "Isn't it dangerous to carry a .45 pistol that way?" - Cocked and locked Texas Ranger: "Hell yes! I wouldn't carry it if it wasn't dangerous!"

  • @Tower1Podcast you have not carried CCW or w/ holster a 1911 in cocked and locked? That is why you do not know how safe and fast to deploy a 1911 that way. Experienced it first before you will shy from it.

  • @Tower1Podcast how else would you carry a 1911? they should always be cocked and locked.

  • @Tower1Podcast I would feel comfortable carrying it that way. The 1911 has two very strong safety mechanisms, so it would be very difficult for you to cause it to fire accidentally.

  • @Tower1Podcast Most people carry the 1911 cocked and locked.

    Its not uncommon at all.

  • @Tower1Podcast I think this is more for a home defense standpoint , I mean he tested a remington 870 & marlin 336, I'd like to see someone cc that!...lol And from a person that carries a Colt Commander XSE, The only way to carry a 1911 is cocked and locked! Any striker fired pistol with 1 in the chamber is actually cocked & unlocked, which is far more dangerous.

I'm not saying you're one of them, but anyone i've ever seen badmouth a 1911 doesn't actually own one, try it you'll like it! =)

  • It would be cool if they added a weight category

  • @derekmasuda --That is part of the draw and fire test. Quicker to draw a bead on a light gun.

  • Great series of videos. Your scoring seems a bit sketchy--your shooter used two hands for the accuracy shots, instead of one for the Colt 1911. The Glock 22 shooter used one hand for the accuracy test and scored lower.

  • @RScottM31 he only used 1 hand for accuracy shots

  • lol have they thought anything really important factors about handguns? Usually its up to people how fast and accurace they can be with a certain pistol model. 1911 series have high recoil and low magazine capacity so i would take any 9mm over it

  • Love its report! I'm impressed with his asessment of "time to first shot". Many say that the platform is kind of huge for CCW.

  • My favorite handgun of all, it fits my hand better than any double stack wonder nines. And the trigger! What a beautiful thing!

For concealed carry I sure wish there's a practical way of making the 1911 lighter, but it's slim, thin profile sure makes it easy to pack!

  • @HaNsWiDjAjA Kimber Ultra CDP 2 25 ozs. 3" barrel perfect ccw

  • 1911 "And that's the way it is."

  • concealed carry my ass that thing is huge

  • @piekiller3 thats what she said

  • Could you test the Colt Delta elite or Glock 20 in 10mm auto

  • Another waste of video. Trying to conceal this gun is difficult. There's a reason why few people CC a 1911. Why don't you do something productive with your time, midway USA, by offering helpful guns reviews instead of arbitrary testing?

  • Its my favourite handgun

  • That's illegal where I come from, sadly. You can't even pull a knife in self-defense without doing time for it here. Go Aussie......... :-(

  • @Alex462047 Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 right

  • @Alex462047 Almost sounds like you are in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, where I live.

  • This is not in the least bit biased, why doesn't he just throw a pecan pie at the target?

  • Yeah.. bunch of nonsense.. Larry somewhat forgot to mention that you have to cock the weapon before taking the shot, because it is single action.. haha!! forget 1.8 sec. on first shot!! absolute nonsense!! 1911 is not defensive weapon at all!! ..but rather offensive military pistol..

  • What I don't really understand about these videos is the only area being scored that can't be improved by practice is the caliber. If you took the time to get to know your firearms as well as you should, I don't see any reason why you couldn't max the first 2 stages with most of the guns reviewed.

  • @jmcgo347 Fear the man who only owns one rifle for he surely knows how to use it, right...

  • Larry Potterfields just a Bad Ass :]

  • new petition going on now the repeal the hughes amendment to the FOPA and NFA. if you support the second amendment check it out and give your signature. probably have to google it. links don't work here =(. this will help to lift the ban of full auto firearms produced after 1986.

  • Won't you be my neighbor?

  • The 1911 pistol is my favorite pistol. It has been proven time and again in many different combat situations for over a century. But it is absolutely not a concealed carry gun, it's a powerful accurate pistol yes, but it's heavy and big and uncomfortable to carry. You will stop carrying it after a time.

  • gurment model xD

  • Its amazing yet pathetic at the same time that we've been using this for one hundred years!

  • power and time is iimpportant but how about the factor of being comfortable to carry on you all the time

  • I have to admit I think these videos test Larry more than some guns, but I like his personality so well I still enjoy watching them. I have this kind of Mr. Roger's flashback with his grin. I think somehow he is the kind of fellow that would be fun to have around the campfire telling stories.

  • toss a muzzle break on that and your good to go

  • In Florida, a Colt 1911 (or variations), is very difficult to conceal, considering that we usually dress in lightweight clothing. That said, I never leave my house without my Colt 1911 government in my glove compartment. My actual CC is a S&W model 37, 38 spl, 2" bbl... I know, very boring...but it shoots true, and is reliable. If, however, you walk up to my truck wanting to cause trouble, you will be staring down the barrell of my 1911....

  • my carry gun, a ria 1911a1 tactical model

  • Larry Potterfield: Just being a CEO is boring, I think I'm going to make youtube videos

  • @CptSmokeAlot Heh. Actually, he made these segments for the "Best Defense" series on the Outdoor Channel. They're here on YouTube as a bonus.

  • i want a 1911 in 10mm

  • @TheFirearmsChannel -That better be sarcasm.

  • These area really neat videos, but I think it's kindof funny they say the .45acp and .45 Colt rounds have the same terminal effectiveness as a 12g 00-buck load :P .

  • @JLindenwood how are you going to hide a 45 long colt, unless you're using a colt peacemaker,if you are I hope you have a fast and accurate quick draw

if you do i want to shake your hand and buy you a bottle of wiskey.

  • @dasdew2 There are .45 Colt revolvers that are about equal to a full-sized 1911 in size. I regularly concealed-carry my 8"-Barreled.44mag Raging Bull, though.

  • @JLindenwood 8"44 magnum? Its your life and you protect it, i hope you dont mind me asking how can you hide that and dont you think thats a bit larger than neccesary?

  • @dasdew2 Inside the wasteband at about 4:00, with the grip forward, with an open vest to hide it. The barrel basically goes down next to my right leg. I've only been carrying it because I sold my other defensive guns a while back and just never got around replacing them after I started carrying the Bull. But, I recently bought a new 9mm so if I like it I'll start carrying that instead.

  • @dasdew2 Drawing isn't any harder than with smaller guns I've carried because the split second longer it takes for the actual draw stroke is ofset by how easy it is to huge my fingers around the huge grip.

  • Guys, If you want to carry a gun AND be all cozy and comfortable too, buy a little 25 Auto, right? If you want a piece of AMERICAN history thats been kickin' bad guys asses for 100 years, then get an M1911 ,stock that sucker with some quality ass STOPPING rounds and git'er done.....and STOP Cryin', your gettin' my powder wet CUPCAKE! US Army "Recon"

  • I think they should have one more factor based on size/weight. Of course a full sized .45 is going to have decent accuracy, decent response to recoil, and hit like a truck. It also weights several pounds and is quite large.

  • @majinspy Yeah that's the thing...Larry does these videos for "concealed carry" firearms, but a full size 1911 is not easy to conceal.

  • @Chris9183 Sure it is, as long as you conceal it inside a car. Or you're Darth Vader.

  • i can def see this guy shooting a burglar and lighting off on dirty harry quotes, all with that smile and chipper tone...he's like the mr. rogers of firearms

  • @fergie123able and then after he's shot the robber good old Larry would stand over 'em and go, "And that's the way it is."

  • stop cheating

  • @pizzacrazy1000 I know right lol

  • Larry, you're WAY too happy! LOL I guess I'd be to if had all those guns to play with all the time! LOL

  • This like a bull shit no sights big boi

  • lol, the gun wasnt even sighted in

  • @espana00091 what the hell do you get out of posting these crap comments

  • DONT READ THIS CAUSE IT ACTUALLY WORKS. YOU WILL GET KISSED ON THE NEAREST POSSIBLE FRIDAY BY THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE. TOMORROW WILL BE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. HOWEVER IF YOU DO NOT POST THIS ON AT LEAST 3 VIDEOS YOU WILL DIE WITHIN 2 DAYS. NOW UV STARTED READING THIS SO DUNT STOP. THIS IS SO SCARY. PUT THIS ON AT LEAST 5 VIDEOS IN 143 MINUTES WHEN UR DONE PRESS F6 AND UR LOVERS NAME WILL APPEAR ON THE SCREEN IN BIG LETTERS. THIS IS SO Scary Cuz IT ACTUALLY WO

  • this is my favorite handgun, but this guys enthusiasm!

  • As someone who loves his 1911, it's accurate, powerful, easy to use, comfortable, and thin, but it's also rather heavy and long and tall enough that I can't really see concealed carrying it, honestly.

  • By any maay-shure, Larry?

  • I found it incredibly easy to masturbate to this video.

  • @ch3dder ...And I thought my comment was funny. LOL! It must be Larry's smile and that big erect pistol.

  • I bet he smiles like that when he shoots criminals.

  • knock down factor is the only thing that has anything to do with the gun in any of these catagories, and really you know that when you go in by what its chambered in. the rest is on the shooter and has nothing to do with the firearm itself. horrible way to rate a conceled carry gun!

  • @mastakilla64 You think while judging a CONCEALED carry handgun concealabilty would be important by this standard the judge is the best handgun for concealed carry.

  • Larry uses happy as a weapon.

  • I bought the same pistol but from metro Arms in the Phillipines. M1911A1 "AMERICAN CLASSIC II". She has a ll the bells and whistles and very reliable, for $420!!!!!!! get'em while their HOT!!!!

  • How American :-D

  • @bigrob18772 Yeah, it sucks right?

  • Youd think concealability would be the biggest factor, its a large heavy firearm which would make it a pain or uncomfortable to carry, 1911 is a great gun though

  • @mark16443 didn't read any comments in my blind rage...these are good commercials but they are so off and I bet tons of people trust these...oh well I used to think these folks new a thing or two

  • @Ben85paintball and you've had to take down how many people in your life?

  • so far the 1911 has the best score heh

  • @3rd6thdeathward That's only because it's American.

  • @Keichwoud357 maybe so.. though it has proven itself in being a extremley reliable and comfortable gun to carry.

  • @Ben85paintball just proves accuracy :P

  • @Bobsnoblol Excellent choice!

  • @Ben85paintball So you would think, but when drugs or adrenaline are a factor it's much, much different.

  • sweet

  • Hes got the best job in the world

  • I played this in the 1911 mode :P

  • That was the best group I've ever seen him shoot in one of these videos

  • LARRY!!! PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT THE M-1 GARAND!!!

  • You can see in his face in this review that he really likes the 1911

  • Thank God for Mr. Potterfield he is the reason why the NRA is gets a lot of funds to fight againts those gun ban nazis in Washington aka "Distract of Corruption".

  • @Captb55806 dont forget to roundup ur midway purchases :) anything against the nazis everywhere

  • @mark3smle The more I can buy from Midway USA The better. The is a lot of ducebags out there that are killing us. As Harry Truman once said " America must will at any cost even if it takes sweet, blood and tears"

Will I will not and I shaw not let them defeat us.

  • @Captb55806 sweet, blood and tears? Spell check!

  • @johnnywindows1 Sorry about that my keyboard is broken I have to replace it.

  • What's wrong with open carry?

  • I'm willing to bet the wrap up wasn't the first take. He's trying not to laugh!

  • Why dont you rate for ammo capacity and weight?

  • Comment removed

  • Larry's a legend !

  • Beats his bad pitch on the Colt Python

  • @TheFirearmsChannel That fred guys has issues!

  • @airsoftloverusp

Ya dude that fred guy has EXTREME issues, in fact, he just sucks. Maybe I'll make an account over it...

  • man that guys slow, i bet i would do a lot better in all his tests.

  • The first two tests are subjective. They depend on experience with the gun and everybody has different sight picture speeds and draw speeds. The only test that is actually conclusive is the last one that has nothing to do with Larry firing a gun.

  • @TheFirearmsChannel

No he's a good guy, but his tests are still bad.

  • Comment removed

  • @fredjustsucks I don't believe I would test in the exact same way as Larry, but he IS testing all of the weapons the same way. That said, I would have 3 people test the guns and give an average score. As long as you use people, these tests will be somewhat subjective, as everyone is different.

  • @fixitman21

Ya he's testing them all the same way, but there's still a human variable, his quickness and accuracy could be better one day than another

  • @fredjustsucks No arguement there. That is why you have more testers involved. The best result you can hope for is a common trend. I hunt with a longbow. Too often, I hear (new) people ask "Who makes the best longbows?" The answer is always the same. Go try out as many as you can and see which works best for you. Same with firearms.

  • @fixitman21

Ya that's a good idea, an average score between many people

  • i sure love mine

  • Nice pistol, but not my first choice for a CCW. How can this pistol score better than the compact Glocks and the HK USP Compacts and subcompacts? This is a very heavy pistol also.

  • @khalsasikh Because its a 1911, it's been around and its the most tested and tried auto pistol in existence. Its a full size pistol and it ain't light either, but its alot easier to conceal then most non full size pistols because of its slim profile. Not to insult your intelligence but you realize the barrel length and weight are huge factors in this right. I own a 1911 and thats my concealed carry choice.

  • @dbmccart I have a 1911 also, and it is a very fine one. As far as carrying concealed, I would not choose it over my Glocks or my HKs, although I have carried my 1911 on occasion as a CCW. I carry it sometimes during the winter when I can conceal it under a large jacket. I agree the 1911 has a proud history, but for it to score so much higher than other super fine pistols is not very accurate. Sight radius is also important besides barrel length. Glock and HK and even SigSauer have this down.

  • @khalsasikh A compact will be easily concealed but your just not gonna beat a full sized pistol. A full size HK USP or better yet its big brother the Mark 23 would probably perform better in this test. However the weight of the 1911 still gives it an edge over most pistols because you have less travel. Sig Sauer is a good gun but i'm not even going to bother praising Glocks I know to many people who have had problems with them.

  • @Samopal21

I only carry a full size 1911, inside the waistband.

  • @damarei I carry mine either OWB in a Serpa, or in my Galco shoulder rig.

  • @damarei what holster do you use and where do you place it?

  • @SDhunter2020

    A COMIII by HBE leatherworks.

    Usually either 2 or 3 o'clock.

then again, I'm like 6'3" or so.

  • @damarei i tried that this summer.. pain in the ass i switched over to the glock 19

  • @homelessguy01 Excellent choice!

  • @damarei Why?

  • @Keichwoud357

    Please elaborate

  • That is a big hunk of metal to conceal...

Not that light, and I find it funny that he is quicker to shoot the first and fallow up rounds with this than with lighter 9mm's

  • I love my 5" 1911 but honestly it's too big and heavy to be a good concealed carry weapon

  • Gotta love 1911's
