I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and tank clean and rustfree
@alfistii1 which Jaguar was that? Agree about the DB5 - but it is also cool because of its history not only its styling - but the stlying led to the history so... The Italians have styled a disproportionately large number of the most beautiful cars - Bertone's Citroen DS is one of my favourite cars ever. To me only the XK120, E type, BMW 507, 300SL(R) and Bugatti Atlantic punctuate the work of the Italians on my 'most beautiful' list. Fortunately there are many others with much charm. :)
@alfistii1 really? thats interesting. so thats the body not the chassis as well? The new astons are styled by a Dane and Ian Callum I think. Bentley's by a Belgian. Although the best looking Porsches in my opinion were styled by Tony Hatter - the 993 and the Carrera GT. :D These symbols of national pride (cars in general) are often far more international than most would like to believe.
If I had an Aston Martin DB5, I would do 100 mph down any road. The sound of that motor revving is music to my ears. The pure enjoyment that one gets going that fast is exciting. Many will never experience such exciting ride such as driving a DB5 which IMHO is the most exciting car Aston has ever bult. Way to go Simondgb.

Also I am curious about the exhaist. Do you have have a photo of the exhust system? Some debebate as to whether Astons used round or orval shaped sillencers. I say round.
Thanks for posting, listen to it everynight before I drift off to sleep.
You are correct sir! It is a tri-Carb setup. Te exhaust is round and not oval made by quick silver. Sadly, I sold the car at the Bonhams Auction held at the factory back in May 2009. I did however buy a DB4 which as soon as its back on the road I'll be posting a video. Thank you for listening.
@simondgb I know right? I have a 1972 MGB GT and that has never gone wrong.. I only had one mild issue, but that was a very simple fix and it works just fine
I love them but will have to put up with a e type.Dont gun them when cold because they tend to blow back through the carbs and end up on fire. What a shape of car sex on wheels.THE 60'S IN ITS BEST
Aston Martin DB5 is not known for overheating like the early XK 120 and XK 150 Jags of the 1950s. British cars got a bad rap because of the Lucus electrics. But truth is they were no worse than any other cars of the time. The DB5 is timeless and a piece of art despite what Top Gear says. Good work on the restro. Its a beauty!!
it doesnt over heat. i own one. i really nimble but surprisingly squerrely. i had to replace the suspension and out new disc brakes in it. the suspension is great and it handles phenominally well but the suspension is where it lacked. maybe cause its old and hasnt been changed since the 70s but that were i had my problems. no cooling problems what so ever. i never had it over heat. excellent buy for 54k. -just for the record i am a mechanic and a die hard aston martin collector and other cars.
always overheating, bad electrics, first astin to have a five speed gear box so loads of the original db5s in 1963 went wrong. most of the few that are still on the roads today have been updated with new electrics, more power, anti lock brakes and stuff like that. i suppose it is worth it if you have the money because its one of the best looking cars of all time.
de dude obviously watched topgear were their DB5 overheated, and since jeremy clarkson says so, every DB5 overheats, people believe anything these days. And even if it were unreliable, it's still the most beautiful, legendary, wanted car in the world. I could die happy if i driven such a car once
Glad you noticed the Nato Strap on a 6538 Sub no crown guard.
I have posted a new video of the DB5 1677/R restored from Blue (not orignal) back to glorious Silver Birch (as per the James Bond car). And, Yes this REALLY is one of the rare factory Silver Birch cars as per the build sheet also in the video. Once Lincoln Scott has finised the interior, I will also post a video on that too. Enjoy :)
Yes, Standard very old exhaust. The car is restored and ready for some new videos which I will post next time I am in England. The new updated 4.2 Liter unleaded engine rebuilt by Martin Brewer of Runnymede sounds fantastic. Much deeper and throatier.
Me too! I wish i bought one 12 years ago when I checked the market but thougt 50.000 pounds a bit expensive, the same cars sell for 120.000 pounds now! But I will buy one before i die!
Actually, the video was taken when the car was still Blue metallic. It was recently subject to a bare metal respray by Alan Smith in original Silver Birch. Will soon have some new videos to post.
Looking forward Simon! Thanks for sharing!! Any chance of some track day outing footage? This has put a big smile on my face .. THANKYOU! By the way, is that a standard exhaust - it sounds very healthy!
i looooooooooooooooove that sound!!
usually i don't like old englis cars because after each 20 km they're damaged :D but the DB5 is absolutely amazing!

The new Aston's like the DBR9 look very good, but park a mint DB5 in silver next
to it and i think most petrolheads or motorists will agree the pure italian style is
in a different league, and ultra cool too, not every Aston is cool and the manufacturer
can't try persuading the public that it is because Jaguar tried that and it made it
the opposite Un-cool.. the DB5 is cool, it just is...Daniel Craig or bond will always
look cool in a DB5..

Beautiful car, bet most people don't know it's Italian.
It was designed by Carozziera Touring of Milan, penned by Federico Formenti,
And beautifully constructed by Italian craftsmen using the superleggera method.

@ruddytechnik ; I don't think the Aston became a icon due to the chassis, Touring
also designed a Lamborghini in the same decade with similar styling 350 GT i think.
The aston would not be such an icon if it was not styled by Italian's, it's elegant
and extraordinarily beautiful, cool too. Italian's have a natural gift for style and it
has always been that way..still is. Built with a flare for style and passion that
attract's the enthusiast like no other..Italian cars know no peers..
