The reason this technology didn't become more popular then is because they underestimated the cost of electric to produce the hydrogen. A source of "free energy" is needed to make it cost effective. Burning extra oil and coal to make electricity essentially would cause more pollution and raise the predicted cost of making hydrogen.

...im no expert but as i understand it there are measures taken especially in more modern versions of this type of tech, to remove more and more of the dangers of such things...but also worth remembering is that even now our cars etc. are highly combustible pieces of kit...

Also there are other propulsion tech's that are not based in this hydrogen area that seem even safer still.

yes i agree there are more energy based vehicles that have come out that are quite safe. especially in the 90's to this millenium. the only reason they are not being used is the fact that those who control the oil industry want to keep us reliant on the fossil fuels. simple greed overtaking common sense. perhaps a beginning to the answer is found in more public transportation. the less cars on the road the more it hurts their eternally deep pockets.
