But REALLY? TLC DRUMS?......Dayam, Dilla. I love these kind of beats. He borrows a known beat pattern and goes the other direction with it.

    Example: "Won't Do"

James Dewitt Yancey, another reason to be glad my name is James.

    Dilla for ever

  • pete rock's influence on jd is heard in this song

  • @wherearemybones2 Yeah sounds a bit like Play this only at night

  • @NaughtyPanda2 this almost sounds like paying homage to pete rock and i just noticed that this sounds like 'play this only at night'

  • @wherearemybones2 Respect to Pete Rock but Dilla was making his sound around the same time if not before. Rock said Dilla was "the only producer as serious about this as me..."

  • @cavaleer

Nah, Pete Rock was making beats before Dilla. PR started in '87, Dilla started in '93.

From an interview with Pete Rock: "He let me know how much he was influenced by me. His mother pulled me to the side and whispered, 'you are his favorite'. He was really humble. We could call each other anytime. Dilla would inspire me at times when I couldn’t make a beat."

They were good friends, and both are on each other's top 5 favorite producers.

  • @AVINbeats Great quote and info and it's good to know they were close and had respect. But I don't know that Pete Rock had his 'sound' all that much before Dilla. He may have been making beat since '87 but the question would be when did he craft that Pete Rock sound? To me, if anything, Pete Rock was the only cat doing something that resonated with Dilla then Dilla took it to an entirely different level. To be honest, Dilla did what I expected PR to do. "What's Next On the Menu" is still my fav

  • @cavaleer 87 was when PR stared making beats professionally. PR said he started DJing at 7 and got into beats as a teen. He made "Mecca & The Soul Brother" in 92, a year before Dilla got into the industry (93). As you prob know, that album essentially defines "his sound" of jazzy/funk beats (aka TROY). So based on that, I would say PR "got his sound" before Dilla. J definitely took it to another level though, and influenced PR afterwards. "What's Next..." is dope! Thats a rare joint, good looks.

  • @AVINbeats Good points and GREAT info. Happy Holidays.

  • what what what
