  • Not the best version of the track but it's OK. Kenny does fine but unfortunately with Keith you got it all, the madness, the feeling, the joy, the interaction and you just knew when he was at his best there was no one better.

  • I love this version...

The encore of this show is one of the best they ever did :)

  • I saw them on this tour just a few days after the tragedy at River Front Colesium. Although Keith was long dead, this was considered a comeback tour of sorts. The film Quadrophenia had just been released (they played the trailer on a screen before the show began) and Pete was about to release Empty Glass. 1979-83 was the era that defined them more solidly as the world's first punk band.

    They were.

  • This is the third concert I've seen with Kenny, first was '82 Rock America, which somehow didn't sound so good that I'm not blaming Kenny for, the other was World Aid that seemed more who like for me and this is Very Who though as hard as Kenny was hitting the drums, Keith is still missing. There's a DVD to this yeah?

  • it feels and sounds so artificial without Keith. It's still rock, except it's missing its big burly balls

  • Kenny Jones is the drummer Pete, John, and Roger always wished Keith would be. Those are real facts.

  • @tomthefunky Sorry Tom, but John Entwistle NEVER would have agreed with your statement here. And that IS a real fact.

  • @tomthefunky Sorry Tom, but John Entwistle NEVER would have agreed with your statement here. And that IS a real fact.

  • @OrrCountry: Touche, my good man. I'd put that accent slash over the letter "e" in the word "touche" if I only knew how. You are absolutely correct, though. Roger wouldn't agree with me either and I was probably drunk when I wrote it, but I get really fucking sick of assholes Kenney-bashing all the time. I guess I was just venting.

  • @tomthefunky: No worries. As you may know, John and Keith were very close. For many years after Moonie died, John was not able to talk about him.

  • I'm a fan of the Zak Starkey days, personally.

  • avaliable as a bootleg i know where from...

is this the show after the cincinatti tragedy?

they dedicated the next show to the fans who died

  • was this the first show without keith?

  • you can see pete urging kenny on,,,, but it's just not the same without keith.... Roger said as much later.

  • keith in his "fat drunk with no stamina or skills" days would shit all over kenney jones anyday. fasima is clearly a kenney jones fan and believes to his soul that he belonged with the who when he clearly didn't. the who for me is 1964 - 1978. kenney jones?? i mean, seriously... i could've provided more spark and energy for this song. kenney jones... pffffffft.

  • Clearly did since from 1979-1982 were amazing. The Who for me is 1964-1982 and Quad/Tommy tours of 80s/90s so there you go...

There were so much sparks during Kenney years on record/live, it's amazing...

    Brlliant energy/playing/music/shows...

That's just the way it is :)

  • @fasima well, to each his/her own. i'm gonna have to disagree with you and side with the 97% of Who fans that recognize the decay after moonie's death.

  • @ChroniclesOfSpring The Who were dead way before Keith died,or rather his playing was.

  • @ChroniclesOfSpring ...don't dis the Jones pal....Jones was a great drummer and whats happened has happen,i think it was better having a drummer like Kenny, than someone trying/pretending to be Moonie, whoever The Who chose would of had critism. I believe the best days were 64' -74'- 76' You gotta take your hat off to Kenney for filling some almighty shoes!.

    Regards.

  • Kenny Jones is a fine drummer but should no have been with The Who. He is too smooth and too safe for the wildness of Pete Townsend...

  • Absolutely should ahve been with The Who and thank he was, they were amazing (and better) than anytime (with any drummer) after him on record/live.....

  • @fasima Yeah i agree too. As i said in last comment it was better to have a drummer like Kenney than someone trying to play like Moon.

  • @fasima u have no idea

  • Wow the first time I really enjoy this song: Kenny Jones did the guys real good.

And Pete's sound on that Shecter is great

  • excellent points gichigoomi--you obviously know your shit about this Band. Just like the Super Bowl this year, they get a pass from peeps who know where their rightful place in rock history lies....at the apex!

  • I was at this show. It was readily apparent how much Moon was missed. Pete used to feed off Keith's energy, and now the entire dynamic changed. It just wasn't the same. Still loved seeing them and hearing the tunes, though.

  • I cant understand how this could be regarded as shitty - I WISH other bands were as good as this. In this day and age... I just cant see it happening. Saw the who this year and they were just awesome - nearly 30 years after this vid.

  • This is sad. There's no keith moon to make it more exciting. Thankfully pete's still around.

  • It seems like there trying to hard in this version, like they look tired. Still sounds great of course

  • @tfoldager Roger hated Kenny Jones's drumming and thought it lacked power and spontaneity. Pete was mired in addiction. They were all tired and at at a very uncertain hour in their careers. Years later, Pete said that the band was a failure failures because they hadn't saved the youngest member from dying before their eyes, and subconsciously they felt unworthy to be on stage, not as musicians, but as men. This is their low point.

  • 1979 is one their higpointst... the whole tour that year, it is beyond fantastic, Pete talks nonsense all the time... :)

Roger just hates the fact that never has been the amazing singer he was during

Kenney years and that Kenney had bigger muscles... :)

They more worthy to be on stage than ever...

  • You are obviously a big fan. So am I. I enjoy them even more now that I see them retrospectively as men, and not as icons. They were an incredible mix of ambition, talent, and personality.

  • @fasima haha! yeah Kenney did have big arms!

  • Great track... Am I the only one who is blown away by Johns bass?

  • John's bass is about the only thing that impresses me about this performance. He's F'n amazing! But this isn't the real WHO

  • @moontheloon1982 I Honestly think Daltrey is good on this one too.

  • kenney is competent but he's a studio drummer. The magic isn't there. You watch earlier videos with Keith, you can just tell there's a chemistry that lacks here.. They're just going through the motions to keep the cash cow alive.

  • The magic is just so there, brilliant chemistry like during whole of this brilliant show and 1979 tour.

    1979-1982 = pure gold...

"going through the motions" terrible stuff has been 1999 onwards crap....

  • You can easily tell Roger's passion is there and songs clearly doesne't need Keith. Kenney delivered great !

  • Roger just seems so effortless you can tell that his passion just isn't in it.

    and you know why,

    This songs needs Keith.

and he knew it. Kenney just couldn't deliver.

  • The Who shows I saw in 2000 were about the best Rock shows by anyone anywhere. To say they should have stopped is ignorant. They were still one of the greatest bands in the world. Live no one could touch them.

  • that's so true!!!!!! even the las vegas reunion tour in 1999 was a totally kickass rock concert!!!!!!

  • i agree saw them at sheperds bush 1999

fucking awesome and raw as hell

  • The Who Finished in 1982

  • The Who Finished in 1978.

  • If they only knew I could kicked the s--t out of those songs for Moonie. Kenny Jones was killing Peter. Cant you see that Pete was getting frustrated?

  • Obviously wasn't killing, in fact complete opposite and clearly not getting frustrated

    with Kenney..

  • timasso!

  • Sounds like they haven't played this one in a long time. Kenny Jones did a fine job replacing Moonie but he definately doesn't have the technique for this song. Pete was pretty drunk during this tour as well. Actually it sounds as if they didn't bother to rehearse this before playing it live. a shame. it used to be a highlight of their early 70's shows. I'll bet they discarded this tune from any subsequent shows on that tour after this debacle.

  • No debacle, fantastic version version and playing, no shame here to me. Kenney have absolutely the technique for this song, starts from weird unimagtive non true thing that the songt should be played only on way... thanks God they didn't ape the old... that pathetic thing is for 'The Who" of last 10 years (post 1999 joke carbage shows)

    To me anyways :-)

    To me anyways...

  • well if you like it, that's fine. i agree that the Who should have pulled the plug years ago. But, they gotta eat too i guess. these guys were never rich exactly. in fact, Townshend was bankrupt near the end of 1980. that's why they had to do a major, corporate sponsored farewell tour and give Warner Bros 2 lps with hits to settle up. I like the last two records actually despite the fact.

  • i give kenney a lot of credit.

he had some wild shoes to fill.

in my opinion he's still a fantastic drummer.

    so dig the small faces...

  • God.. Roger with short hair.. No Keith.. an organ..and worst of all: Pete playing a Telecaster!!

  • omg you're right =[, i dont mind the organ, i think it fits well but i dont like kenney he needs to loosen up while playing lol

  • Roger with short looks great..

No Keith, doesn't matter, still fantastic

Dude was druggy, so sutff happens...

Organ= works brilliatly and adds to version.

Fabulous version and and still better than any crap version after 1982.

Pete had 3 great fantatic guitars/tones,

    Sg/LP/Trle(Schecter)

  • I didn't like Townshend schecter sound that much but that was more by 1982. I thought his guitar sound/tone with the Schecter was incredibly thin on the 1982 tour (although it was pretty good from 1979-1981). I personally think Pete was best with his SG through the Hiwatt. Anyway, yes, Keith was "druggy" but there is no denying without him there was a certain charm and flair lost. Just look at those 1970 Tanglewood shows to see how much he brought.

  • @drummer78 I think the reason for the different sound may have something to do with Pete using one less amp and two less cabs by the '82 tour (from 3 amps/4 cabs to 2/2), because his guitar, picks/strings, and effects were all the same for both.

  • It was released as part of the Amazing Journey pack at Best Buy

  • Check out Kenny Jones' solo on the Faces clip

"I 'm Losing You", and you'll see a much better drummer at work. He seemed to play more stiffly with the Who, and I tend to wonder how much of that stiffness was a result of Pete's desire to reshape the sound of the band after Keith died. Kenny's playing on all the Small Faces recordings is very similar to what Moon was doing at the time.

  • Kenny Jones is a good drummer. Not the right drummer for The Who. I still think Zak fits the band better though.

  • wow, fantastic version, better than any weak version they have plaeyd with Zak..

This have power and great guitar playing

  • wow! this is the worst version i have ever heard them play. p friggin u!

  • WOw Kenny Jones does not look good here. Haha....

  • kenny jones is a brilliant drummer . but i didnt like the who at this stage.

  • Obviouslyt right drummer since they were better with him than any drummer after...

  • there was no right drummer after keith, kenny was good but didnt go right with the who, the best they had after keith was starky cause he plays similar to keith

  • It doesn't matter what Zak does since rest 3 were never as good as they were during Kenney

hence Kenney did go right perfectly and they were infinately better than the crap they have been during Zak era 1999->....

  • thats your opinion but there is noone who could replace keith RIP

  • All the more reason why it doesn't make sense that Jones gets a beating from Keith fans. Jones will always get a nod from me because, unlike Starkey, he never even tried to duplicate what Keith did. It was a thankless position he was in, but I think he handled it with more grace than anyone could've under the circumstances. Maybe one day Rog will be able to acknowledge that and give the guy a break. Especially in regards to the 1982 tour, which rocked more than "real fans" are willing to admit.

  • kenney is a good drummer. just not the right drummer for the who

    RIP keith

  • It's true this is a different 'Who' still an exciting band to see even with out the 'dear boy' at back, but you gotta give it to Kenney for standing in,you gotta have balls to try and take Moonies place, yeah he was a completely different drummer, reliable some might say! But you gotta give it to Kenney for getting up there!

    Kenney rules!

  • The post Keith Who were a good band in 1979. In fact, some of those early 1979 shows were hailed as some of their best in years. The Who were in some ways never more popular. However, after Cinncinannti, I think Pete just fell into a major booze/drug fueled depression. The band suffered. Also, Roger became more vocal about his distaste for Kenney's style. I personally believe this effected Jones' playing as he seemed more retrained in 1982 than he did in the earlier tours of 1979-80.

  • Ginger Baker was a heroin addict at this point in time but he is absolutely one of the best drummers!

  • yeah, they would have killed one more excessive drummer.

  • Kenney is fabulous. They playedx amazing groovy live shows during his era unlike anytime after...

  • Kenny Jones was terrible.

  • Fantastic, rule of thumb if they have short hair it's brilliant..

  • this stinks compared to earlier stuff...my rule of thumb is if they short hair, it's pretty much beat

  • If you check out Keith on Live At Leeds (early 70's), you will hear a jam of this somg that will blow you away! I wish there was vid for that album.

  • See here's the issue..If you compare this Who lineup with other bands at the time..no comparison definitely. BUT If you simply compare this lineup to the one with Keith there's no WAY you can tell me this is better or even close. The Who with Keith gave you the feeling like the place could blow up at any second, it felt dangerous. This doesn't do that.

  • Well, shows during 1979-1982 does to me..

however nothing after after 1982 does, except for Tommy/Quadrophenia tour. Rest are worthless crap...

  • Well let's totally agree on the Quad tour. Best Who album IMHO and killer show.

  • sorry...there are one kind of Who fan but two factions of Quadrophenia fans. The gigs in '74 showcased the ban at their peak, while the "movie" stuff was a cash-grabbing reprise--like Pete's attempts at Broadway now. Tommy, admittedly, has held it's own based on legendary status, and boomer nostalgia.

  • Movie? Never saw it don't care. I get all the visuals I need listening to the album on headphones with my eyes closed.."Is it me..for a moment?"

God one of the best albums ever.

  • saw them at Madison Square Garden in June '74, the Quadrophenia tour. my first concert, heard that sound in my head for days afterwards and it propelled me into the music biz.

  • Sorry..I agree that Kenney was great with The Faces. But he's the wrong drummer for THIS band at this time. At 2:00 Pete's showing him the beat like he did back when Scott sat in for Keith at the Cow Palace during "Naked Eye"..Granted no one played with the ferocity of Moon..but they went to the other extreme with Kenney.

  • Clearly right drummer since live shows during Kenney years were brilliant...

  • Pete is not showing him "the beat"

Much of the encore of this show was improvised if you see it in its entirety. Kenney`s attack on the crash cymbal shows he was getting ready for the finale of this song when indeed it was not going to end at that moment. This concert hall also had a pretty intense echo which Roger made mention of. During "Baba" it was almost like you were hearing 2 vocal tracks and they had a false ending on "Who Are You".

  • Hehehe, reverse inflence. The Who was clearly influential for Led Zep but this song is pure Zeppelin pastiche.

  • Clearly not...

  • @MargusKiistheCritic they were playing this song, with the same arrangement, before Zeppelin even formed.

  • In defense of Kenney Jones, there is no defense. He's a BadAss. Anyone who says otherwise don't know shit about drums. It's a different WHO, thats all. They Rocked heavier than anybody during that time {79'-82'}. As for this show, they're ON FIRE. This is days after the Cinn. show. Pete's fucked up, John and Kenney are drinkin and doin some blow. And Roger's just Rockin. This is a show is a great example of Classic Hard Rock!

  • Anyone happen to know the order of the set list for this concert? I'm making a playlist of it and want it to be in order.

  • google "Who Setlists" and the first choice is something likw Who 6.0,click that and it has everything

  • no offence, but kenny is terrible

  • great rap song

  • Those Entwistle bass runs have me 'shakin' all over'!!

  • Love Roger Daltrey...THE VOICE! Great upload..thnx!

  • Oh yeah, baby!

  • I'm sorry, I LOVE The Who, but this is fucking terrible! Moon is the only drummer who can play this song, or any Who song for that matter...I stopped listening to The Who's music after the Who Are You album and any of their live shows, and this is why. Whoever the drummer is, he's fucking terrible at this song.

  • Kenney Jones? Yeah, I don't like him with the Who at all, but he was good with the Faces/Small Faces.

  • You don't know what you are talking about.

The drummer is Kenny Jones. He was with the Small Faces and Faces. He is a great drummer, but just different than Moon. He fit well into the Who.

  • Keith was much more exciting in the Charlton show and Cleveland `74. The problem was after 1975 his playing was unpredictable and he even knew it. Kenney Jones was awesome in his own way and pretty much a constant. Even on the boring Shea stadium gig Kenney put more energy in the show than Pete and had actually developed his own style for those shows which was incredible at times.

  • meant to type Cleveland GIG 1975

  • I have the entire show on DVD. Good stuff. They really screw up the ending of Who are You but it is great because they screw it up with attitude. My favorite bootleg DVD though is The Who live in Houston 1975. That is killer!!

  • Awesome show!! I would love to see this whole concert on DVD.

  • Keith kicks every drummer's ass. It would have been way better with him.

  • Keith could kick anydrummer's ass. What the hell are you talking about?

  • What the hell did you just say? Speak English.

  • It's perfectly clear what I said even with non perfect English.

"hahah, good one.. no, fat drunk with no stamina or skills anymore Admit it"

  • No, still doesn't make any sense. That is not perfect English. There's shitloads of grammar problems here...

  • Fantastic, yes, but it would've been better had Moon been there. Admit it.

  • hahah, good one.. no, fat drunk with on stamina or skills anymore Admit it.

  • What are you talking about! Keith Moon died in 1978. It is true his skills have deteriated since then, because he's dead.

  • Important video as it shows how much the Who missed Moon who passed away the year before....it sounds like they were going through the motions of being the Who....no spark or interaction between the guys....Clearly they were not the same band and Townshend was not a happy camper at this point.

  • Complete rubbish.... this is fantastic show. One their best of any era....

  • yeah, this is a really, really good show.

  • The Who just going through the motions are still better than 90 percent of the bands out there. I think Zak Starkey is the best drummer they have had since moon. Most Who shows are fantastic, but they peaked from 1969 - 1972. There has not been a band now or then who could come even close to what those guys did on stage.

  • U right. The Tommy / Who's Next Tours were the greatest events on modern stage. The August 1971 appearance in Boston could never be matched. But the later versions were still eons before the minions. The Who were and remain the Greatest Live Rock Band.

Nobody can think of touching them at their height.

Anybody (Cream, Hendrix, Kinks, Stones derivatives) should give it up. There is only one group live and that is these guys.

  • pete was on fire

  • The OX R.I.P
