Wow, I heard about this footage for years and it is pretty disappointing. This has long been debunked as a fraud but now that I see it, it's not even a good one.
actually lemmings were harmed in the making of that picture, because it's a clip from White Wilderness where Disney filmakers chucked lemmings off a cliff for our amusement.
So lemmings do not commit mass suicide. Indeed, animals live to thrive and survive. Consider a company like Disney, where one rodent, namely Mickey Mouse, was Royalty. It's rather odd to think that Disney could be so unkind to another rodent, the lemming...
Scientists believe they do this as a reaction to over-population, they don't intentionally commit suicide, they just keep 'migrating' and if they come across a cliff, they work themselves into a mass panic and jump off. if they hit the ocean and survive they will try and continue to swim towards the middle of the ocean, so in the end just about all of them drown.
@simonvonashferd actually it's humans that commit mass suicide as a result of overpopulation. since we first evolved we've been overpopulating areas, then grouping together and charging at eachother with weapons until most of us are dead. then the population goes back to sustainable numbers.
yeah, right. This is exactly what lemming do. go study some facts instead of listening to what momma Liberal in San Francisco lied about to you growing up.
You can see that their being pushed off. Look up on any legitimate source (i.e. NGC, Discovery, BBC, History channel) and you'll find out that they don't intentionally kill themselves.
@takerold12 the "jumping" that you see in this old Disney footage is staged. Someone off-camera was nudging, pushing and tossing the animals. If you watch the animals closely, you can see that their movements into the air often look unnatural and excessive.
@takerold12 Lemmings don't actually leap to their deaths, their not suicidal. But they had went there to get lemmings jumping off of cliffs, so they pushed them. I mean Disney because this is a part of a disney production and these were disney employees.
Actually, many of you will be surprised to know that this is NOT normal lemming behavior. They do NOT perform seasonal suicide jumps. Apparently, much of the "jumping" that you see in this old Disney footage is staged. Someone off-camera was nudging, pushing and tossing the animals. If you watch the animals closely, you can see that their movements into the air often look unnatural and excessive.
WTF, is right. "It looks like a cliff ... Yes it's definately a cliff, and it is a massive drop to the ocean below. Let's all jump to our deaths, the water looks so lovely this time of year."

@CorgisAreForever But why did they have to kill the lemmings? I mean, couldn't they have, like, build a small cliff into a small but realistic tub?
