Loved this film. Its great to see how well its appreciated even after all these years. Certainly a timeless horror classic that relied on mood rather than the technical.
For psychologically terrifying films from the 70s, I rank this up there with the Exorcist and The Omen. Yeah, that final scene with Karen Black as the old lady is a heart stopper, but it doesn't get any creepier than a gawky chaffeaur with an evil grin at a funeral. I've seen this so many times, but watching the clip where Oliver Reed's character is outside -- and the old car slowly enters the drive -- and you can see the chaffeaur in it -- still scary!!
It scared me to death when I was I kid. I hadn't thought about it in years, then that Herman Cane commercial reminded me of the chauffer's creepy smile. Thanks for posting it.
@seanr456 That grin absolutely scared the shit out of me i was 10 years old and had to sleep under the covers for years after that.it seems really dumb now but the karen black scene is still creepy!
Bro, if you were also born in 1976 that might scare the crap out of me... a friend of mine and I who are bicentennials were scared to death not only of this movie but more importantly the limo driver... Insane footage, love it!
It's been years since I saw that movie. I forgot how scary it was. I'm also surprised by the graphic nature of the scene where Oliver Reed falls on the windshield of the car. That was pretty brutal for TV. I'll have to see if I cant get it on Netflix.
If your a young teen, yah it's a scary movie. But hardly has a plot and suddenly it ends with the suicide, that was weak tit. They should make a porn parody our of it especially around @3:50
Great tribute to a great movie. This is one of my favorite movies. It has a great story, a great musical score, great characters, great acting (especially from Karen Black, Oliver Reed and Lee Montgomery), and plenty of atmosphere and suspense. What more could you ask for in a film?
@NC28001 Saw this for the first time around Halloween of 1991 whenever freshly 13 when it was late at night and my dad was in bed and this movie scared the living s**t out of me and it still in pretty scary...... The chauffeur makes me laugh a little now with his big a** grin.....lol
I just watched this film on DVD and I'm going to leave the hall light on when I go to sleep so that the chauffeur won't get me. besides the grin, it's the black-lensed eyeglasses that terrify me.
I've only seen this movie once and need some help. Is that old woman is sitting in the top of the house an evil spirit that takes over the mothers body???
My fiance and I love horror films, and we watched this one early on in our relationship. The main selling point for me was that no matter how much she loves horror, she told me there's one character that's so scary that she can't even look at them, and I'm sure it's pretty obvious who I'm referring to.
I seriously cannot think of any other movie that scared me quite like this. The more I watched, the more uneasy it made me feel, because you just knew something terrible was bound to happen.
how about Bette Davis. in this film she was great one of my favorite actress. I still get a tingle of fright with Tony James came up stairs with the casket.
@Chemicalwarfare84 A family moves into a summer home together, but there's something about the house that causes them to slowly start behaving in strange ways, and causes bad things to happen.
I'd never heard of this movie; caught it at the first chauffeur scene by accident and couldn't stop watching it. I knew something was up with the old lady upstairs because you never got to see her until the end. Great, suspense-filled picture, much scarier than the "slasher" films of that era; the little gore in this film comes in right when you're already at the edge of your seat.

Yeah that chauffer is THE scariest! You know when I was twelve, a lady from our church took us to a midnight showing of this on Hallowfuckingween! HAHAHHA LOVE HER! HAHAHAHA
You know what Sean? I've been haunted by the chauffeur ever since I saw this movie as a kid too! We called him "Smiley" and my stepmom thought it was funny to throw out there once in awhile... "Smiley's gonna get you!" She tortured me and my stepsisters with it... LOL
MY FAVORITE PART IN THIS MOVIE IS WHEN ANTHONY JAMES THE CHAUFFER,DRIVES UP,OLIVER REED IS HACKING DOWN WEEDS,HAVING A BEER,THAT PART ABSOLUTELY GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS,AND THE ENDING IS TERRIFIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aughhhh!!!! Glad to see that I'm not the only guy who was scared senseless by Anthony James as the chauffeur. They used to play this on HBO back in the seventies constantly. I'd watch it and have nightmares. That music box theme has been in my head since I was 9, lol. Good stuff.
oh my god! whenever i ask someone if they've seen the movie they don't know what i'm talking about - everyone besides my brother - i was 6, he was 5, and we were at my dad's for the weekend. he let us watch the movie and i came home completely FUCKED UP!! for real this movie and anthony james in particular terrified me i wasn't normal again for a year. my mother wanted to kill my dad.

I adore this movie & made a point of visiting the house (Dunsmuir House in Oakland, Ca.) in 1997 & it was still standing over 20 years later! They were giving tours, so I jumped at the chance, but they wouldn't take us up to the attic!!! Oddly, they don't have a special Halloween celebration, but they do have a Christmas one. Go figure. I can play the music box theme on the keyboard, btw. The chauffeur's among the reasons I've come to be suspicious of anyone who smiles or grins constantly!!
I remember this movie when i was 8, and it was scary then, i didnt remember the name of it. I finally found the name of it and bought a DVD of it on Ebay. I watch it over and over again. never get tired of it.Btw, it goes good with my 105 year old house.lol.

Was about 16 years old when i saw this. I liked the Exorcist more because there was more action, but the end scene, especially when the wife turns around, is the eeriest thing I've seen to this day.
@seanr456 ...all he needed was a cat in his lap and a parasol. Im not a hater, tho...lol. When I read the book, it crossed my mind that his character was written in the novel to be gay, although it doesnt make that clear. The dialogue in the book is the same as it is in the flick, tho..
Did this film have a scene in it where a bowl of milk on the doorstep turns to blood and sprays into a childs face? Its a scene thats haunted me years but I have no idea what horror film its from!
Its very nice and I was watching this but I didn't complete watching half of the film if you could pls put the episodes back because I searched for them all over youtube and can't find it , I hope someone will post it to youtube , thanks .
@seanr456 my dad said the same thing except for the horrible grin. He said he couldn't sleep for 3 straight days. He was waiting for the chauffer to come up the stairs. I was shaking when he was describing him.
OMG this movie along with the chauffer was the scariest movie ever. I remember as a young kid maybe 5 or 6 and watching this on ABC and not being able to sleep becuase of nightmares of the chauffer smiling coming to get me. Great classic. This was recently on cable and till this day I get goosebumps.
WOW I thought I was the only one!! I saw it on channel 7 late night at 12 years old and couldnt sleep!! That damn chauffer and Karen Black at the end??!!! WHOA!
** Another Oliver Reed movie that's "disturbing" is "THE DEVILS" with Vanessa Redgrave (Academy Award winner actress). It's semi-based on historical data from the 1600's. The country of France had it's own "Walled" city. This much of the film is correct (I've done research). You'll fine the macabre, mass exorcism, plague, mysticism and trials by torture. If you can find it, rent it. I own it (VHS). V. Redgrave & O. Reed are convincing! I am JamminClemmons. I approve you post of Burnt Offerings!
It's been some 20 years since I last viewed this...I gave-it-a-go. It's the ""no-rush"" family time that's portrayed which is of particular liking for me. Hook-up O. Reed's fabulous emotional output with Betty Davis? How in Gods blue world could this movie flop? The bed scene, where Betty Davis was semi-crippled by {some entity}, was the scariest part for me. With Oliver Reed there, it was believable. I was re-scared all over again. Some older horror flicks blow away the crap we see now. Great!
no mutilation, no guillotins, no electocutions, no decomposing corpses, not a single drop of blood ! and yet, perhaps the most terrifying movie i 've ever seen! a masterpiece of cinematographic fear !
Lol. What about all the blood at the end when Oliver Reeds's character was thrown headfirst into the family wagon? I agree with you though. This movie is awesome and doesn't need all the things you mentioned. It's a true horror movie!
Yes. This movie instilled terror in me as well. I did not sleep well for months. This was on every year for a while. And every year I was re-terrified.
Yeah, it was on chiller a few months ago and still scary, especially the ending. I never connected King Diamond's album "Them" with this movie, but there are some similarities.
I just watched this movie again today. I havent seen it since we were at the drive in and I was 8 years old. I had nightmares over the Chauffer well into my 20's and can certainly see why. One of the scariest movies ever!!!! It was amazing to see myself as a 42 year old man and all that terror coming back to me!
you can keep yr friday 13, halloween & saw those movies r not scary when a movie can get in yr head like burnt offering & Damien without chopping plp up thats scary it still scares me to this day when oliver reed turns karen black around in the chair gat zeus chills man
You guys are not alone. When the chauffer is dragging the coffin up the stairs to the room that Bette and Oliver are in, Oliver Reed looks as scared as I felt. Nightmares for months on that one.
My parents took me to see this when I was 8 years old at the drive-in. Scared the heck out of me then as it still does today. Got it on dvd a couple of years ago and watch it occasionally. Such an underrated gem. To bad a few Dark Shadows actors didn't have cameos but there weren't that many characters. Thanks for the vid !!!
Hey good job on this. It was kind of like Cliffnotes on the good parts of the movie. I wish I could find a copy of the book. Also, I would like to see a remake with Anthony James being the driver again.
This movie scared the sh#$ out of me when I was like 7or 8 back in the 70's. No CGI back then people really had to act in a horror movie. A true classic.
Everytime I see this movie, I need to go get a Coors! You can tell Oliver Reed really needs one in that scene! If it were any other actor, one could surmise that they were not actually drinking beer; but, in Ollie's case....I rest my case.
This movie was seen on a week where me and some friends cut school on a dark rainy day. and i can still see my and two friends litterally jumping over the couch and tossing soda and popcorn everywhere when the chauffer threw that casket on better davis and the end when the father got tossed out the window.,
I saw this when I was a kid I agree with the rest of everyone they don't make films like this anymore it really fucks with your head!!!!! especially the ending!!
saw this movie when i was 9 at the drive-in...Anthony James scenes terrified me and gave me nightmares for a few years at least...they just dont make movies like this anymore. shame
I first saw this movie when i was 8 years old and was terrified by the chaffeur never had a nightmare i was just worried i was going to see him somewhere in the house late at night when there were not many lights on. whats interesting this is not something where they make a person look like a demon or a monster they just got a guy to where black sunglass with a black suit and black hat and then set his Grin to depressingly scary music and a tense untertone and it was horrifying brilliant work
am i the only 12 year old kid who enjoys this movie? lolz! anyway today i was watching charlies angels and anthony james was a guest star in it he so different without the glasses! =S
I saw that episode of charlie's angels you can tell its the chaffuer from burnt offerings toward the end in the police chase when is shooting his from the passenger side windown and Smiling
the betty davis scene with oliver reed when death, hell, and the grave come knocking still scares me..and the final scenes of karen black's character having been possessed brings back exorcist nightmares..but thanks for posting
Whenever I list some of my favorite scary/ horror movies of all time, this movie is always among my faves. I saw it in the 70's and I'm glad it came out on DVD. Someone suggested a remake, but like new "Omen", I think it would rely more on technical effects and lose the realism of the creepiness which is the soul of " Burnt Offerings" . Most older movies are perfect the first time around.
i saw this at the theater when i was ten. it is just as crfeepy now as it was then. a horror masterpiece. with one of the greatest endings of all time. this house, by the way, is in oakland, ca. still there to this day.....
This movie is so creepy and so well done because whatever they do they are all destined to die they can't get out. This is what nightmares are about and the ending is very disturbing the music also helps in the creppy factor.
Yea, this chauffer gave me nightmares for quite awhile after seeing this movie. My brother and I still talk about this movie and we saw it in the mid 70's. I saw it the other night on one of the premium channels and had to laugh. The chauffer that scared the crap out of me when I first saw it now reminds me of Jim Carey. Now I laugh we I see clips of this.
I don't mean to pop anyone's bubble, but I thought this movie was pretty dull.
It has a "made for TV" kind of feel (whatever that means, haha).
I didn't like the way Dan Curtis was kind of a dick to screenwriter Bill Nolan during the DVD commentary. Nolan was making interesting observations, but Curtis was answering him like he was in the middle of having his prostate checked.
I don't know what it is about Oliver Reed, but he's not a likable screen presence here.
To LisetteLaCroix: HaHa, now that you mention it, I guess I DID!
I sometimes feel bad after I go on a tirade. I ask myself "Was the movie that bad, or am I just in a bad mood?!" I need to be a HATER from time to time! :( :)
I really didn't like the way Curtis was talking to the writer. It makes me mad when someone is arrogant and condescending to a person who doesn't deserve it. By all accounts, Curtis (RIP) was no Spielberg.
O.k. And you're from what planet??? This is one of my favorites from the 70's, and scariest. But everyone has a right to their opinion. What was your scariest 70's movie?
The original "Halloween" comes to mind. I haven't seen it in awhile.
When I recently tried to watch B.O. again I felt very emotionally detached from it (translation: bored).
People talk about how scary the chauffeur is. I've gotten to a point where "scary" isn't about an isolated image, it's how it plays out with the characters involved.
The clown in "It" is scary, but he's more than just a face in a dream sequence.
"People talk about how scary the chauffeur is. I've gotten to a point where "scary" isn't about an isolated image, it's how it plays out with the characters involved."
The driver could be the epitome of the fear of death and playing on that fear. Sometimes mystery has a certain amount of power.
True, though, how it plays out with the characters makes a big difference. I did think Reed is always good, however.
In the dream sequence, was one of the mourners Karen Black as the old woman? This would explain Reed's emotional breakdown at the end of the film. Anyway, I saw this film on its initial release and the chauffeur still gave me the creeps as much as he did back then. Thanks for the post.
My older brother would sometimes grin at me like the chaffeur, and freak me out when we were kids. Now that we're adults, I can't even tell him I have a tummy ache without freaking his wife out. The news would detestate her poor innocent hubby.
Thanks for posting. This is one creepy little film. Although he has comparatively little screen time, the chauffeur and his sadistic grin remain one of the scariest memories of my childhood - rivaled the vampires in Salem's Lot and "Bobby" from Dan Curtis' "Dead of Night".
It looks like the funeral home building from "Phantasm". I wish Netflix would offer the sequels, I want to see them. I just added this to my queue, too. Rochestra you should put Burgess Meredith in the keywords for this :D
I want that neat old limo! The Rolls-Royce hearse, too!
Yeah, it's the same one: the Dunsmuir House in Oakland, California. A number of films have been made in the house and on its grounds. Wikipedia has an article on it.
lol. i kno watu mean. wen i was ung it scared the BeJesus outta me too! still not sure if i can watch the whole movie now at 46. lol

@seanr456 ...all he needed was a cat in his lap and a parasol. Im not a hater, tho...lol. When I read the book, it crossed my mind that his character was written in the novel to be gay, although it doesnt make that clear. The dialogue in the book is the same as it is in the flick, tho..

JamminClemmons 1 year ago
It's been some 20 years since I last viewed this...I gave-it-a-go. It's the ""no-rush"" family time that's portrayed which is of particular liking for me. Hook-up O. Reed's fabulous emotional output with Betty Davis? How in Gods blue world could this movie flop? The bed scene, where Betty Davis was semi-crippled by {some entity}, was the scariest part for me. With Oliver Reed there, it was believable. I was re-scared all over again. Some older horror flicks blow away the crap we see now. Great!
JamminClemmons 1 year ago
poltergeist ? oh yes, i have seen the first one, but i don't remember much of it, nice screamie though...It's been more than 20 years ago, i think...
i don't remenber that character, the rev i mean, at all... i thought he was a real baptist preacher ! hahaha !
theo9952 2 years ago
my favorite all-time screamie.
no mutilation, no guillotins, no electocutions, no decomposing corpses, not a single drop of blood ! and yet, perhaps the most terrifying movie i 've ever seen! a masterpiece of cinematographic fear !
theo9952 2 years ago
now that i remember, there was, ONE SINGLE DROP of blood i Ithink, when K. Black got her finger pierced by a thorn of a dead rose tree...
theo9952 2 years ago
Lol. What about all the blood at the end when Oliver Reeds's character was thrown headfirst into the family wagon? I agree with you though. This movie is awesome and doesn't need all the things you mentioned. It's a true horror movie!

I just watched this movie again today. I havent seen it since we were at the drive in and I was 8 years old. I had nightmares over the Chauffer well into my 20's and can certainly see why. What is Bette Davis' screen time on the movie? Is it a tiny role?

no, it's not. she played a very important role and "died" half way through the story.
actually, hers was the only "death" in the movie, that occured before the film's finnale.

Everytime I see this movie, I need to go get a Coors! You can tell Oliver Reed really needs one in that scene! If it were any other actor, one could surmise that they were not actually drinking beer; but, in Ollie's case....I rest my case.

So THERE!

LisetteLaCroix 2 years ago
To LisetteLaCroix: HaHa, now that you mention it, I guess I DID!
I sometimes feel bad after I go on a tirade. I ask myself "Was the movie that bad, or am I just in a bad mood?!" I need to be a HATER from time to time! :( :)
I really didn't like the way Curtis was talking to the writer. It makes me mad when someone is arrogant and condescending to a person who doesn't deserve it. By all accounts, Curtis (RIP) was no Spielberg.
Did you see the movie? Did you like it?
FigurinItOut 2 years ago
O.k. And you're from what planet??? This is one of my favorites from the 70's, and scariest. But everyone has a right to their opinion. What was your scariest 70's movie?
marlarice 2 years ago
The original "Halloween" comes to mind. I haven't seen it in awhile.
When I recently tried to watch B.O. again I felt very emotionally detached from it (translation: bored).
People talk about how scary the chauffeur is. I've gotten to a point where "scary" isn't about an isolated image, it's how it plays out with the characters involved.
The clown in "It" is scary, but he's more than just a face in a dream sequence.
FigurinItOut 2 years ago
"People talk about how scary the chauffeur is. I've gotten to a point where "scary" isn't about an isolated image, it's how it plays out with the characters involved."
The driver could be the epitome of the fear of death and playing on that fear. Sometimes mystery has a certain amount of power.
True, though, how it plays out with the characters makes a big difference. I did think Reed is always good, however.
Wytchfinde 2 years ago
I don't know if you've seen "The Brood." Reed plays an interesting character in that.
He did a great job in "Gladiator." That type of role was a good fit for him.
RIP Mr. Reed!
FigurinItOut 2 years ago
I've seen both, in fact I have Gladiator almost in reaching distance as I type this, oddly enough.
"RIP Mr. Reed!"
Indeed, he'll be missed. I actually got The Devils soon after he passed---it's a dark horse of a film, but he's brilliant in it.

I've never seen The Devils. I'll check that one out!

In the dream sequence, was one of the mourners Karen Black as the old woman? This would explain Reed's emotional breakdown at the end of the film. Anyway, I saw this film on its initial release and the chauffeur still gave me the creeps as much as he did back then. Thanks for the post.
