Cliff didn't quit; he died in a car accident in 1986, then Newsted was there from 86 all the way up to 2001. That's 15 years! That's what sucks the most about it; he played for Metallica for 15 years and then walked away like it was nothing. They haven't had a hard time keeping a bassist, I mean McGovney wasn't even there when Metallica
