  • was just getting interesting.

  • if you ditch classical music, you ditch rock too.

  • the audio on this is really good.... that or they've got some really nice sounding cellos. Maybe both.

  • You're right, something has got to change but it certainly is NOT the music.

  • The problem with the classical music scene isn't the music. It's the attitude that's associated with it. Within the last century, it's become somewhat of an stuffy thing that stuckup elitist's love to call their own. The music is wonderful, there is no denying that fact. Personally, as a young teenager I did tons of ecstasy and really enjoyed it but the high is nothing compared to the high I get when I listen to a Beethoven or Brahms symphony.

  • :D,... exelente este maestreo lo esperamos por aka por cartagena para sus cocniertos sera un honor escucharlo gracier

  • Giving examples like this - isn't it typical the student would simply copy? Is this what his teacher, Rose, did?

  • Oh, so what you propose the student do then, just ignore everything she's is told?

Thaht way she would not just copy and would not be her teacher's clone so to speak.

But just one problem, why the hell did she even turn up for the masterclass?

  • AHHH THATS SUMMER LUV YA ^^

  • I'm always very scared of masterclass like lessons. Still, its awe inspiring hearing the interpretations from people who have had much more experience playing music than yourself, and it might positively influence your own interpretation if taken the right way.

  • There is no doubt Hoffman is a fine cellist/teacher. But what good does it do to spoon-feed an interpretation to a student? Oh that's right, they win jobs! Now u see the problem?

  • Oh, Mr. Hoffman is a very musical man, he was just speaking of his idea about the piece. I'm sure the cellist here doesn't mind much :]

    (I am the cellist haha)

  • You are so lucky to be learning with him!!

Btw, i find that he positions his cello higher than most people, do you find that as well?

  • hahaha =) thats awesome i really enjoyed your playing

  • He's just demonstrating to the student how to use a wider variety of color in the music, not imposing his own interpretation.

  • What problem? So the teachers should just say "I don't wanna spoon feed you my interpretation, so let's just not do anything otherwise you will end up copying me, you are dismissed."

Ha, what a resposible and enlightened teacher that would be.

  • Classical music certainly is not dying, on what basis are you claiming it is? Interest in classical music in teenagers is growing, i can quite comfortably talk about classical with my school mates as if we are talking about pop music. Well, maybe that's not the case in the states, where peoples' ears are filled with rubbish music from the media, they hardly ever get the chance to even get to know classical music, let alone like it.....

  • Name ONE living classical composer that's a house-hold name. I rest my case..

  • Certainly i can't, however can YOU name any jazz/folk composer that's a house-hold name? Hmm Jazz is the only other genre other than classical that i think is worth studying in the teritary level. "Folk" music, due to its very natural, are just simple tunes passed orally amongst the general populatoin. Now if you were to teach folk music at conservatories academically (laughable as it may sound but for the sake of argument), it would no longer be "folk" would it?

  • In the jazz realm Chick Korea has more name recognition than any classical composer today.

The Kronos Quartet, Turtle Island, Mark O'connor, Bela Fleck, Yo-Yo Ma all make a very good living playing what u call "rubbish music".

  • Since when did i ever say those music are rubbish? I said those genres arent appropriate for teritary level studying.

In any case, i DID say i agree jazz is the only other genre of music aside from classical that is worth serious studying. But certainly not for folk and rock as you have suggested in your previous posts.

Read what i said properly please.

  • philip glass

  • good one

  • SO. Classical music is a staple. It's the basis for everything else that comes after. It's much more beautiful than crazy rock music on the cello. Why are you saying to lean away from it? If you want to rock go ahead but ditching classical is simply absurd.

  • @celloWiz10 I love tempting the thought, she gets so mad when you tell her she's not worth anything.

  • @AlamoCityCello I am so saddened by this post of yours. I have watched many of your videos and think you are great! No musicians "dwell" on old music so that we can get it perfect. We play it because it is the most beautiful expression of human emotion and life. Because Beethovens 9th is old, it should never be payed in a concert hall? Because Bach is ancient we should never play the cello suits? You surely cant believe that, or you dont yet appreciate classical music.

  • @AlamoCityCello And it is funny you mention Yo-Yo. You do know he has recorded THE ENTIRE cello repitiore right. He has played everything. If you look at all his concerts over his life and all his recordings. How many metallica covers does he do... how much pop does he cover. Yo-Yo does have it figured out. He is bringing the beautiful music of the past to modern day listeners. I am all for playing "new" stuff, but to ignore classical music because it is old is simply foolish

  • How about learning some NEW REP? Do you really have to dwell on the 18th 19th century to the point of "perfection" The time would be better spent learning something NEW ie.. jazz/folk/rock. Classical music is dying a slow death because too many musicians are living in the past. Go to Yo-Yo's website and see how LITTLE classical music you'll hear! If things don't change soon, most pro-orchs will close in the next 20 years. Yo-Yo Ma has figured this out, have you? WAKE UP FOLKS!

  • As for rock..... Imagine rock music being taught at conservatories, haha, really, what CAN you teach them? There's no systematic, established teaching method for rock music. One hasn't got to "study" or "research" rock music deeply to be successful, simply because there's just nothing there....
