Might as well play My Last Words in its entirety haha. Id like to add:
Hook in Mouth
Liar
Mastermind Intro
And im sure there are still others. David Ellefson sees the bass guitar as the "glue" between the guitars and the drums, and this is why he is such an amazing player, especially for Megadeth. He can play alongside every other instrument in the band, and by himself.
I used to play with a pick because I wanted to sound like Dave but then a couple weeks ago I switched back to fingers. Imo Cliff burton is overrated, he was a badass bass player, but we see more from dave ellefson than we ever saw on Cliff, so from my part, Dave is number 1.
@briands1993 primus? maybe ...but slayer? are you fucking kidding me? this is the guys notes for every song: E string 0 0 0 11 0 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 0 1 1 1 loooool
@illyas1 That's what you say, actually Araya's lines are more complex than what you think, and playing at that speed and singing at the same time, not everybody can do it...
@illyas1 Araya serves the low foundation and vocals. While it's certainly more impressive to do complex and grooving lines like Ellefson, that's just not Tom's thing. Each bassist has their take on the instrument, and neither of them are better or worse because of it.
go and see some of very megadeth video... u can clear see david play something like my last words or bad omen fingerpicking... I don't really think he is bad with fingers..
@MrGul "some of very old megadeth video.." sorry... I mean I remember I was watching to the old video with kerry (1984??) and there you can see that he plays with his finger or in a live at san francisco (in 1987 I think) he plays some parts with fingers like the intro of my last words but there are others... fuck my english xD
Cliff Burton,David Ellefson,Steve Harris Top 3.Those things that are said about Tom Araya well he is a ncie basist but Slayer songs have really easy bass tabs he is more of an inspiration overall not just as a basist
Don't forget that Ellefson played finger on KIMB, he started off as a finger picker and evolved to a pick because of Megadeth's intensity. Cliff is good, but he is highly overrated in my opinion, David is the best and most creative.

For those of you who claim that I'm bashing David Ellefson, I'm not. I love him as do I love Cliff. Good music is good music. No matter whether it's Megadeth or Metallica. Cliff Burton and David Ellefson are both excellent bassists and they are both far too unique in their own ways to compare.
lmao. And here I was thinking there was no way you could be more ignorant than you possible were but you've proved me wrong. Kudos =P. Please name one other effect Cliff Burton used and please describe your logic as to how effects make songs more melodic. If you need some examples, go watch Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) on a cello and Master of Puppets didn't use any effects. Neither did fight fire with fire, only the intro of For whom the bell tolls and neither did he on Lepper Messiah. Troll xD
Chosen Ones and My Last Words are always my favorite songs to play. Peace Sells and Dawn Patrol, however cool, are easy as balls to play, as in, you can easily learn then on your first day of bass.
We shouldn't have this pick vs fingers argument. Both have qualities that the others lack, that is why I am proficient in both. If you want a clear rich sound, use pick. If you want more controllability and a deeper sound, use your fingers. No reason to fight over a piece of plastic. Play whichever makes your song sound better.
Cliff is the better Metal Finger Player, Dave is the best metal Pick player. I believe that Dave can't play Battery with his fingers, and Cliff would never player Holy Wars or Poison Was the Cure with a Pick. IMO
@RockGTA well, i think Steve Harris is a legend too, but Cliff's technique was a little bit more complex. But with no doubt, Harris is one of the best(if not THE best) metal lyricist of all time. imo peace bro
five magics, peace sells, dawn patrol, take no prisioner, my last words, well every bass line from this guy totally blows my mind away, hes a god of bass
@SitotiKurton well may b they let ppl saying Cliff is the best and so on, in their head and lower their expectations. I hav been playing 4only 3 years bro, and if i can do it, any1 can.
@MasterofKnees this is true but killing is my business... and business is good, and peace sells came out in 85 and 86 making ellefson younger than cliff by 2 years when those came out... just saying.
btw I do like cliff burton I'm not trying to be a wanker or anything, I just realized it myself and thought I would share.
@MasterofKnees Thats Unfair you all know damn well that if cliff had lived he'd low them all out of the water just listen to and of his stuff before or during metallica he was insane but i love them all and shit happens for a reason it was just his time to go simple as that
@kipster808 Unfair or not, it is a true statement. Nonetheless, we all have opinions, I just prefer Ellefson, while you prefer Cliff, which I easily understand due to him being a freakin' mind blower aswell.
@MasterofKnees just so you know i wasent meaning to bitch or anything it just makes me mad sometimes to see either one of them getting bashed in my book they are both gods on the bass. All that matters is that metal and rock music in general still is a relevant topic in today's world long live Rock-N- Roll
I'm only just lately starting to really notice the bass, elf is so great, its too bad the guitar overshadows everything so much in Megadeth but I'm really starting to appreciate the bass more lately. even little things like the dodododo before the "peaceeeeeee, peace sellllllllsssss", unreal
@ark1671919 the first megadeth lineup wasjust amazing... Poland Mustaine Samuelson Ellefson, and the second one was equally amazing Mustaine Ellefson Friedman Menza
@ral008 no, Dave's older stuff was also harder then anything Cliff had, and did i even mention Tom Araya?! another bassist that can make cliff look like a beginner
@ark1671919 You're very wrong about Tom Araya. Cliff was a beyond amazing bassist, a man capable of playing difficult basslines with ease and writing complex and intricate solos and bass parts. Slayer is good, and so is Tom, but I would in way consider him anywhere as near as good as Cliff. The bass in a lot of Slayer songs is really easy.
@johncerasi right and a hard song by Cilff wud b?! i've been playing bass 4 3years now and i can already play Anesthesia, his so called difficult song.
@ark1671919 um dude your wrong cliff would whip tom arayas ass at bass dave's an awesome bassist but not tommy boy slayer doesnt suck just toms not a good bassist
@mustainedv8 yeah wtf is ark161919 smoking? idk people seem to bag on metallica for everything even in the 80s, i only like the first five metalica albums btw
@ark1671919 Well I hate to disappoint you, I do play bass and quite frankly I'm pretty good. And that's not just me saying: people around me as well. People who use a pick aren't by default bad, but most are, there are some exceptionally well pick users out there, some use both (Mastodon, Dream Theater), however most use a pick 'cause they can't do anything else. People should develope their finger skills as well. Fingers give more versatility overall, yet pick has a certain sound to it.
@Direksone Finger, pick, slap, they all give a unique sound, not a big difference in osund betwn pik and fingers tho. and ppl start guitars off with fingers cause its easier 2 use fingers then pik(in beginning stages), considering its a part of ur body and regularly used. Picks give u easier speed on1string and Fingers allow easier string skipping. both hav advatages and disadvantages. and Cliff is still a overrated turd
@ark1671919 Very true, well depending on your settings a pick and finger can sound very different, most bassguitar players have pretty high treble, then using a pick is like a rape to me (punk bassists have that sound a lot), but yea Cliff is very overrated indeed, he was pretty good, but he had more a guitar sound than bass sound, it was unique, but as a bassplayer myself: not really a sound a bassist 'needs'
Cliff may be overrated but he wasn't only know for being a bass player. He was a musician. His songs were beautiful. As far as being a metal bassist, David is a lot better but as a musician, Cliff's songs are timeless.
@DaveInVein actually this video itself has a lot of variety of bass line by Ellefson. Heavy, Fast, Technical, Melodic. Cliff not so much, try playing Take No Prisoners, i can already play everyhitng by Cliff and i'hve been playing for only 3years, which includes me starting off as a guitarist.
@ark1671919 My point exactly. As a metal bassist, I would take riffs like Davids over Cliff Burton but I fail to find the musical aspect of his lines. Cliff has more beautiful songs.. I personally would take a beautiful piece of music over a technically skilled song that lacks the musical aspect. David excels Cliff when it comes to being a Metal bassist, but Cliff is a lot more well rounded. I love them both but no reason to say that David was a better bassist.
@DaveInVein how cud u hav this 4 qualities: Heavy, Fast, Technical, Melodic, and still lack music?! Ellefson Is all rounded, not Cliff. Anesthesia 4most parts is a repetitive and gets less technical and melodic as is goes on 4 the repetitiveness and the only other good song by Cliff are Damage and Battery, which i wud give him credit 4 if he wasnt playing the exact this as the Rhythm guitar at all times, like a regular bassist, and their rhythm is never even hard, mostly just fast open strings.
@ark1671919 Cliff has way more Melodic qualities than Ellefson and I doubt that you can argue that any one is more technically skilled than the other. Seeing as your statement is pure bias, have a good day.
Lmao? You do know that even in the 20th Century, You could turn off wah and (cliff burton ONLY used wah and distortion ^troll) it would still be the same song. It's amazing the technology we had in the 20th century. Btw, Something isn't easier with effects. Probably the most ignorant shit I've ever heard. His melodies aren't any more melodic because you add wah and "over 9000 effects." Perhaps you should take your childish logic to some other video.
If you listen the bass only track, you'll hear that Cliff's tone is quite shit (not that I hate Cliff, I love him and his the reason why I play bass) and his general technique wasn't very good - best example, hear Creeping Death's bass track on youtube.
Good point. Cliffs tracks were never mastered. Only remastered tracks sound good. However, Orion, Master Of Puppets, For Whom The Bell Tolls (<--- That song especially), and Call of Ktulu are ALL have excellent tracks. Btw, it was a lot easier to master tracks for David Ellefson/Megadeth than Metallica prior to And Justice for All. Thats a valid point but it only applies to certain songs that didn't emphasize bass. The four songs I listed, especially FWTBT is cleaner than Davids.
@TheBassistWW and about his technique, His technique was perfect. A lot of Cliffs fingerstyle cant be played by David Ellefson and his pick but alot of David's picking technique can't be copied with fingers. The one thing I love about Cliff is that although many of you see him as "Not as good as David Ellefson" He was 24!!!! He was an expert level musician at the age of 24!!!! He's accomplished more in 24 years of life than David Ellefson did his entire life and that is something you cant deny.
Listen, I can agree that he could've been WAY BETTER , if Cliff was alive now that I'm sure he will really be the world's greatest bassist in metal but Cliff is an awesome composer, with new things such adding distortion wahwah and doing an incredible bass solo, Cliff was creative and innovative and there was no other that was quite like him, but take a look at Cliff's live solo (Pulling Teeth) and compare it to David's live perfomance, I think Davids' better but that's just me.
NOP, the best basslines in megadeth are in the first two album, (SFSGSW doesnt have a very audible base) and in that period junior was also under 24. Still hard to say who's better... Oh wait i know who's better...
Lmao. So many people with opinions and bias and none with facts. Both were excellent bassists and expert level musicians. Regardless, I suggest you take some time to open your ears. I'll check DD Vern out.

@ark1671919 why do i always see comments regarding metallica in megadeth vids? and no clue of megadeth on metallica vids.... come on.

@ark1671919 Cliff suffers from RIP syndrome, sorry, but TOTALLY overrated... Dave is Much Better...

@ark1671919 "Bottles" your mind? It's mind bottling?
SIZZLEBIZZLE1982 11 months ago
@ark1671919 well there is one difference: David uses a pick, while Cliff maintains abou the same speeds with his fingers.
Direksone 9 months ago
@Direksone dude i play bass, and trust me the only ppl who complain about that r ppl who dont play bass or suck at it
ark1671919 9 months ago
@ark1671919 And you're implying what exactly?
Direksone 9 months ago
@Direksone not implying, saying!
ark1671919 9 months ago
@ark1671919 Well I hate to disappoint you, I do play bass and quite frankly I'm pretty good. And that's not just me saying: people around me as well. People who use a pick aren't by default bad, but most are, there are some exceptionally well pick users out there, some use both (Mastodon, Dream Theater), however most use a pick 'cause they can't do anything else. People should develope their finger skills as well. Fingers give more versatility overall, yet pick has a certain sound to it.
Direksone 9 months ago
@Direksone Finger, pick, slap, they all give a unique sound, not a big difference in osund betwn pik and fingers tho. and ppl start guitars off with fingers cause its easier 2 use fingers then pik(in beginning stages), considering its a part of ur body and regularly used. Picks give u easier speed on1string and Fingers allow easier string skipping. both hav advatages and disadvantages. and Cliff is still a overrated turd
ark1671919 9 months ago
@ark1671919 Very true, well depending on your settings a pick and finger can sound very different, most bassguitar players have pretty high treble, then using a pick is like a rape to me (punk bassists have that sound a lot), but yea Cliff is very overrated indeed, he was pretty good, but he had more a guitar sound than bass sound, it was unique, but as a bassplayer myself: not really a sound a bassist 'needs'
Direksone 9 months ago
@Direksone im so glad we finally agreed on something!
ark1671919 9 months ago
@ark1671919
Cliff may be overrated but he wasn't only know for being a bass player. He was a musician. His songs were beautiful. As far as being a metal bassist, David is a lot better but as a musician, Cliff's songs are timeless.
DaveInVein 9 months ago
@DaveInVein actually this video itself has a lot of variety of bass line by Ellefson. Heavy, Fast, Technical, Melodic. Cliff not so much, try playing Take No Prisoners, i can already play everyhitng by Cliff and i'hve been playing for only 3years, which includes me starting off as a guitarist.
ark1671919 9 months ago
@ark1671919 My point exactly. As a metal bassist, I would take riffs like Davids over Cliff Burton but I fail to find the musical aspect of his lines. Cliff has more beautiful songs.. I personally would take a beautiful piece of music over a technically skilled song that lacks the musical aspect. David excels Cliff when it comes to being a Metal bassist, but Cliff is a lot more well rounded. I love them both but no reason to say that David was a better bassist.
DaveInVein 9 months ago
@DaveInVein how cud u hav this 4 qualities: Heavy, Fast, Technical, Melodic, and still lack music?! Ellefson Is all rounded, not Cliff. Anesthesia 4most parts is a repetitive and gets less technical and melodic as is goes on 4 the repetitiveness and the only other good song by Cliff are Damage and Battery, which i wud give him credit 4 if he wasnt playing the exact this as the Rhythm guitar at all times, like a regular bassist, and their rhythm is never even hard, mostly just fast open strings.
ark1671919 9 months ago
@ark1671919 Cliff has way more Melodic qualities than Ellefson and I doubt that you can argue that any one is more technically skilled than the other. Seeing as your statement is pure bias, have a good day.
DaveInVein 9 months ago
@DaveInVein goodday 2u2, btw i;ve most green thumb
ark1671919 9 months ago
@DaveInVein you can easily make melodies with over 9000 effects and wah pedals :) ellefson can do that without any
rockonabc1 9 months ago
@rockonabc
DaveInVein 9 months ago
@DaveInVein All famous Cliff Burton bass lines riffs or solos are all made from wah and effects. You're retarded :D
Maybe you should just gtfo since this is a Megadeth video...or go smoke Cliff Burton's ashes?
rockonabc1 9 months ago
@rockonabc1
Btw, Cliff accomplished in 3 Albums what David Ellefson couldn't do in a lifetime. No denying that. Go spit your ignorant logic somewhere else.
DaveInVein 9 months ago
@DaveInVein That doesn't make him any better, he's dead and the wah effects was only an good idea.
rockonabc1 9 months ago
@DaveInVein
If you listen the bass only track, you'll hear that Cliff's tone is quite shit (not that I hate Cliff, I love him and his the reason why I play bass) and his general technique wasn't very good - best example, hear Creeping Death's bass track on youtube.
TheBassistWW 9 months ago
@TheBassistWW
DaveInVein 9 months ago
@TheBassistWW and about his technique, His technique was perfect. A lot of Cliffs fingerstyle cant be played by David Ellefson and his pick but alot of David's picking technique can't be copied with fingers. The one thing I love about Cliff is that although many of you see him as "Not as good as David Ellefson" He was 24!!!! He was an expert level musician at the age of 24!!!! He's accomplished more in 24 years of life than David Ellefson did his entire life and that is something you cant deny.
DaveInVein 9 months ago
@DaveInVein
TheBassistWW 9 months ago
@TheBassistWW
Ooh btw, do you know the bassist from muse. Listen to him, he sounds very similar to both Ellefson and Cliff.
DaveInVein 9 months ago
@DaveInVein
NOP, the best basslines in megadeth are in the first two album, (SFSGSW doesnt have a very audible base) and in that period junior was also under 24. Still hard to say who's better... Oh wait i know who's better...
DD VERNI! (overkill) best bass lines out there
redevil993 6 months ago
@redevil993
Lmao. So many people with opinions and bias and none with facts. Both were excellent bassists and expert level musicians. Regardless, I suggest you take some time to open your ears. I'll check DD Vern out.

Its a shame his signature only looks like his Custom Shop peavey bass,
His custom one is wired differntly and is neck through with an all maple neck =/
I think maybe slightly differnt pickups too? I think his are custom wound,
its still a beast bass though! Love Dave Ellefson, Rust in peace the whole album is bass mastery
