If he were still alive, I would have loved to see Gould at the piano while Dutoit conducted. Glenn could hum the melody, no piano needed, while Dutoit grunted the accompaniment.
i feel that this brilliant performance might be similar to that when he costarred with Antoni Wit/Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra at Chopin Anniversary Concert on Feb 27th 2010. i think that his performance is not depends on conductor.
There are just so many levels to Kissin's finger power. Probably my favorite concert pianist. He must put so much thought into shaping and color (the emotional perception - scary, heavenly, anger, sad, etc). I do like Dutoit's conducting. I've listened to him with Argerich, Yuja Wang, Kissin, etc.
I like the way the orchestra sounds with him.
I usually prefer Concerto 1, but this is Kissin..and it's always wow.
It's bad enough conductor's just get the rep as "the guy who waves the baton to keep the beat" even though they do so much more than that, but now he can't get into the piece like the performers do? Blame the mic guy if you're all uptight about a "HM!" as he down-strokes an intense part.
Wow, what razor-sharp phrasing Kissin gives this and without the hurried, metronomic brutality of many so-called performers. It's like a revelation hearing this... everyone says the 1st concerto is better than the 2nd but now I"m not so sure. This performance gives the 1st concerto a real challenge. I can't imagine Chopin himself would have performed this any more crisply and fluidly than Kissin has... Bravo!
i hate how critics have slandered the reputation of Chopin concertos. calling them 'lightweight' or just plain bad. it almost kept me from giving these a chance to hear. glad i dont listen to the so called experts, they dont know shxt
'tangwenxing' mentioned Glen Gould as making a lot of sounds while playing. I do not hear what is noticed and noted here; but watching Evgeny's mouth and throat, that would be where it came from. He looks spastic and retarded like a Down's Syndrome case half the time. But to me, the "voicing" of the piano he produces is the best available, clear and precise, and sublime or ecstatic and everything in between, as Chopin provided. Listen to the music, and it will be music that you hear.
the REAL IDIOTS here are the YT commentators who are calling the CONDUCTOR a "director", and who are calling Charles Dutoit, a world class conductor, an idiot
@zzzzzzzzzz202 That's right, like the herd which calls a piece "a song" or starts applauding before the last notes of a piece have sounded or worse in the middle of a masterpiece. Just a sign how the naive herd, without any notion whatsoever, lacks the slightest education and destroys the very piece of art in a brutal way.
lol the director makes the noise that sounds like he's shitting. his uhmm doesn't do any contribution to this symphony but he just thinks that it can help get other people's attention on him. what a jerk
Dammit Dutoit! It sounds like the big bad wolf is conducting. I know he's a good musician, but you've got to contain your enthusiasm. It might have come out better if he injected it in the conducting instead of the grunting.
somebody should shoot the conductor!!! He umm several times during the concert to " remind" the crew to follow his direction. To be honest he did not have to do that by making a sound, that just ruined everything.
PONGAN ATENCION DESDE EL MINUTO 1:48 Y VERAN QUE EL SONIDO QUE PARECE UN GRUÑIDO O UN TARAREO PROVIENE DE UN GRUPO DE VIOLINES Y NO DE LA BOCA DEL DIRECTOR , SI SE FIJAN BIEN Y ESCUCHAN CON CUIDADO VERAN QUE SON LOS VIOLINES EN PRIMER PLANO Y NO EL DIRECTOR . ADEMAS SI ESE SONIDO VINIERA DEL DIRECTOR ESTO HUBIERA PROVOCADO LA RECHIFLA DEL PUBLICO Y LA SUSPENSION DEL CONCIERTO
This is the first time I've ever heard the conductor's utterances rise above the sound of the orchestra. It is not uncommon for pianists playing solo to sing along or make moans or grunts, but this is a first for a situation where the orchestra is involved, for me.
@manonsky my Grunt Meter recorded 20 grunts by someone on stage, close to a mic. I welcome submissions of grunt counts that differ from mine. How Evgeny was able to perform with that idiot is a great credit to Evgeny.
If you really enjoyed this, Kissin is performing this again with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Festival Hall on the 6th of October 2010 at 7.30. Tickets can be booked on 020 7840 4242. And no, im not advertising for the LPO, im just passing on the message for those who would enjoy!
@manonsky It most certainly is NOT your imagination. He is a typical egomaniac - acting out the music, titillated by his 'greatness,' and treating these great orchestral musicians as if they know less than nothing. Notice how hardly anyone is even looking at the idiot. It is one thing to enjoy music to the fullest - which is its main purpose, but when one goes to the extreme that this 'conductor' does, it is revolting.
Where is this from? Saw this at Carnegie Hall. I don't think anyone can touch Kissin in this concerto right now. It is to Kissin's great credit that he has clearly restudied the piece since he was a boy and produced a much greater performance than his earlier one, which was itself great.
I think this is form the Verbier Festival in Switzerland in July 2009 (Verbier Festival is for young talented musicians, and performers look young on this stage). The concert hall is far from perfect (it's a big tent, so you can hear the raindrop from the ceiling if it's rainy outside), but Kissin is quite reachable. I was there at this very concert (if this is the one from Verbier), and could shake hand with him right after the concert. He is really a great talent...
lol shut up about chopin's concertos being bad, he was just a kid when he made them, so they are quite rooted in the common practice
