Moscow not capital of Russia 1812. St.-Petersburg - capital. Napoleon hasn't broken, hasn't taken prisoner an army. It has come into an empty city. And ran in the autumn. Winter was afraid. But receding began to suffer defeats. Not from a cold. Napoleon clever. Napoleon receded in the autumn.
Napoleon had almost defeated Russia, he lost only because of the harsh winter which the Russians took advantage of. Damn those 10-foot pound Unicorns.
Napoleon didn't take captured, not one victory. Napoleon to Borodino has taken prisoner 2 persons - of the cook and the Cossack at which have killed a horse. Has given it the horse and has released. Borodino. Napoleon tells "Where the captured. Where a banner of regiments?". On capital to go боиться, writes letters on the world to Alexander. Quits till the winter. Loses again and runs. It is a pity Napoleon. He wanted to punish Alexander. Alexander has killed the father and Suvorov. But couldn't
@ostio543 I've got part 2 all planned out, for sakes alive I'm too lazy to film it cause it'd take forever like this video, and The Old Republic is eating up all my time.
You should make this into a movie and show it at cinemas, people would flock from all over the country to see it... bloody epic, Like, Sub and Favourite :D
This is so incredibly well done I dont know where to start. MAN! Reeally good! I wonder how you managed to make this. What editing program did you use?
LOL Historically Tchichagov was fooled by Napoleon and concentrated his army on an other front; the south-western side of the berezina river, where nobody was there. Tchichagov should have stayed commanding the russian fleet in the black sea. LOL
2 problems met by Napo(called the Little Gengis Khan by the Russians) and his army were:they didn't know how to protect themself against the cold conditions they met in Russia.Russians know since they are born which clothes, shoes they need. They also know what to eat to have energy.Another problem was there are swamps along the Berezina. This river goes outside her "bed"(like we say in French) and becomes 5 times larger than in summer. So it was VERY difficult to move quickly inside the mud.
Actually he came with 449,000 men and quitted with 120,000.
The funny thing is that out of the 380,000 men France lost in Russia, more than half died of disease while most of the 210,000 men Russia lost were killed in action.
@LeHappiste :) Napoleon wrote to the wife that Borodino at it 110 000 at Russian 120 000. Napoleon then said that at it was 100 000 at Russian 150 000. Before death he spoke 80 000 at Russian 300 000. You too are ill? You too suffer? You are angry? You are praised before the woman? Why?
This post makes no sense at all. Im not talking about the numbers, but your english. The two last questions lead me to think that you are quite uneducated. Please prove me wrong.
@LeHappiste you need to look deeper. Why they lost so many people because of the deseases, cold and hunger? because their supply lines were overstreched, constantly harassed by cossacks and partisans and because russian used scortched earth tactics. BTW by the time Nap reached Moscow he lost 200k (napoleon-series). You cannot fight stronger enemy in the field (Nap no doubt possed the strongest army) but you can outplay him in long term, that is what the Russians did.
@zzanek, Napoleon was foolish to think the Russians would surrender if he occupied Moscow for a short while. The Spanish didnt surrender when Madrid was taken, and neither did the Austrians when Napoleon entered Vienna in 1805. Prussians didn't give up when the French captured Berlin.
@Freez57fr well it was a pyrric victory for Napoleon. By taking Moscow he planned to spend winter there and force russian to surrender, but failed. Russians did not surrender, recruited more troops, burnt everything that could have been eaten around Moscow and forced him to retreat. War is not only a battlefield but also the smart use of terrain, environment and resources
For the information of everybody, take note there are NO hills along the Berezina. This river is in the actual Belarus and I go through this country and on the Berezina river bridge 4 times a year(wy wife was born in Belarus). What I may also say,it's that I can imagine how the french soldiers were feeling during these terrible days of end november 1812.The winters are SO cold in Belarus and due to the fact the country is flat, the wind is often hard.Poor guies!!!!
@flemairemdy Well, considering this battle took place in November, it was just Autum, and the problem in this situation was that it was too warm, as the river wasn't frozen over, but just cold enough to kill anyone who waded in it to work on those bridges. Lot of irony in that retreat. Also, while I would have loved to have filmed the battle that resembled the acual battle, there is only one map with ground snow and a river in it, so I had to work with what I had.
I am from Belgium(a little town along the german frontier). One of my ancestors, called Jean-Gilles Lemaire was enlisted inside the Napoleon's army in 1804 till the Battle of Waterloo.I was not a fighting soldier but a "sapeur-mineur".He took part at the Russian Campaign but had the chance to survive. He was not in direct contact with ennemies and also knew what cold was because living into a village from Belgium with an altitude of nearly 700 meters and cold weather.
@GreybirdX If you press the "insert" or "delete" key (I can't remember which), it lets you take the perspective of a soldier or cannon, you can use the mouse wheel to select who you take the view of in that unit. If your taking the perspective of a cannon, you follow the cannonball when it's fired.
Army of Warsaw Duchy lost 30% of troops engaged in this battle. So I simply ask where is polish infantry fighting in the forest with Chichagov soldiers???
They managed to cross thanks to the rearguard troops fighting like lions.
The swiss and italian troops did really well here even if they were decimated and more.
the engineers bridge builders were dutch and had to wade into the river with ice floes flowing past to build 2 bridges 1 for troops civiilians and another for heavy stuff like cannons.
The french were noticeably lacking in their heroic performances in this heroic deed.
@zenoist2 The Cuirassiers were pretty damn heroic. Their charge let them beat back Admiral Chichagov's attack from the west bank. Despite that charge being conducted in less then "ideal" conditions, it probably saved the entire army. So I'd say the French did their part...just not with the bridge.
The best Napoleon total war videos i have ever seen! I've learn so much just watching it, and i'm french! And its' true, "C'est une Bérézina" is a saying! ("This is going wrong/ a defeat", ex: this cooking is a Bérézina!) Now how about a machinima based on the Egyptian campaign? :D
Wow, that was absolutely fantastic. A commendable work, itflak. Like, and added to favorites. Doesn't the Great Coat mod make it seem that much more epic? heh
