It pre-dates the Titanic. The Diode valve (US 'tube') was invented in 1904. Lee De Forest invented the three element amplifying 'tube' in 1906, and was granted a patent for his 'three electrode' tube in 1908. It would appear that, at the time, Mr De Forest had presumed that the effect was due to gas ions. It is stated that the tube was subsequently improved by Irving Langmuir, who removed the gas from the tube. The term 'triode' appears to have been adopted for this kind of device in 1919.
Just a crappy Apex Dvd Player and Cerwin Vega DX7s, the main power amp is a Harmon Kardon tube amp but the o1as do add a lot to the sound, Im amazed how good it sounds, the mid range is rich, and the highs are clear, but not sharp, There is no listening fatique at all, voices have a presence that must be heard in person.. YOu can hear vocalists get close and far from the mike, and other things, it is a up front in your face sound, very big soundstage very deep but smooth bass.
Most audiophiles use tube amplifiers. The physical construction of a vacuum tube and the voltage swing required in its operation fits nicely to human hearing.

That sounds as good as a modern stereo. It's amazing how well those tubes work.
