I like this little machine for my event photography business on the street. I don't want to bring my Macbook pro or my white macbook outside because someone would try to steal it.
so, i would get this because its light, cheap, and could be tossed around.
I love my Mac and love using my iMac for all my indoor work. Acer PC will be for printing pictures and selling it. That's it....
Have done and will continue to do so every time I go abroad. It's really at its best when all you need to do is update online stuff (TheAcerGuy) and chat on Skype. I've taken it to London and Budapest so far and it hasn't missed a beat.
the benifit is a lot you an install software for a start log out = log in as root get access to more software basicly it is the xfce menu i use ubuntu now so i cant realy help
Just by turning the computer on... if you have the XP version, yours doesn't have it. The 'smart start' is just the default gui for the Linpus Linux model.
Oh ok thats what it is. I have the XP version and ran through every file and option trying to figure out how to bring it up. I was on a wild goose chase thanks!
I have been wanting a laptop for 2 years and my parents were planning on getting me one for graduation next year but this is so small and cute and am going to europe this suimmer and want a laptop so I have about 207 dollars so I am going to save up for this. It has alot of memory and is sooo cute and little. I'm gonna give it to myself for a birthday present.
does the mouse pad not have the ability to click simply by tapping the pad itself? I notice that he uses the click button for each click. I've gotten very used to being able to just tap the pad. This is something I HATE about macbooks.
The Aspire One I used here was a pre-production one and it had a few things that weren't quite there yet...
Since I did this video I bought one for myself (the same Linux model) and can confirm that you can click by tapping on the pad and you can also scroll with the pad by moving your finger up and down to the right of the pad itself.
I just saw a 120GB version on the Home Shopping Network. Comes with a 6 cell battery (5 hour battery life). XP Operating System. Current price is $499.00
I'm almost sold on this machine . . . but wary about Linux and applications compatability. I've had problems opening MS Office files with Open Office, particularly database files which I use a lot. I also use many other apps. I found the XP version at just £30 more than Linux, should I go for it ? Also at present I can't seem to find the 6 cell battery version.
ssd = solid state drive, very low numbers mem. wise.. maybe 8-16gigabytes at the most, and hdd = hard disk drive you can top out at 160 gigs on this machine, linux has the ssd and windows has hdd......go windows i say, because of the memory and XP is reliable..
hey i'm not so good with computer tech can some one help me.
I want a laptop that is cheap, portable (under 10") good for media, with a decent bettery life. It also needs to not lag when i'm running heaps of programs.
Is this the one for me? If not, give us some reasons and some other notebooks on the market. Thanks
man its so small and portable i'm so glad that you make this kind of videos it helped me so much of leaning or this small netbook than you for taking the time and making video's like this it helps people like me ;)
Quick question. I might of overlooked it, but is there a built in Microphone within the Aspire one? I'm currently getting the XP/160gb/1gb version, and want to know if I would have to buy a separate microphone on the go.
yes, its built in, but i was watching an earlier video, and a review said that the mic in the acer aspire picks up the fan alot, and very loud. you can always go get a new one if its bad..
when i bought my acer aspire one, it came set up as the normal windows xp interface, but i want the acer inspire one...do you know how i go about changing it?
It's not an interface, it's a whole different OS (Operating System): Linpus Linux. I won't bore you with technical stuff, but put simple it's a free OS that is based on the larger and more famous Fedora Linux.
The Acer One ships in two versions, the Linpus version with 512MB of RAM and a 8GB SSD harddisk (powersaving and faster on paper, although the one in the Acer One is actually slower than the normal one), and the Windows XP version with a whole GB of RAM and a regular 120GB SATA diskdrive.
Thank you for your videos, i really enjoy watching them :) It's like looking over the shoulder of a friend presenting his newest gadget :) Very nice! Especially from 0:30 to 0:32 "THE ACER GUY" :)
I just ordered my A110L in white, looking forward to play with it :)
no all webcams on every model of aspire one (4 types of models) are the same webcam, mayb you packed a little bit more info on ur ssd/hdd then his because this aspire one isnt his he borrowed it, so it should be clean with nothing extra on it. mayb thats the reason for the slow-down, plus overheating could lag.
I found the "error" right after posting this; It was too much bright light behind me. Everything got bright but my face. Next day I didn't use lights in the room, and sunlight came inn from the window towards my face. Then the camera worked just as fine as the one in this video ;P Thanks for replying, though:)

CrossOver Games 7.1 officialy suports Warcraft, and a few other games. It is payware for linux.
With pure and free wine you should also be able to run warcraft, but be prepared for a lot of work and headaches while setting-up everything, as it may prove to be dificult (or even impossible, I don't know).
i compared the aspire one with the EEE 701 and its a bit wider...and even seems to be lighter, or better balanced than the EEE 701. wider is better coz the keyboard is much esasier to type on, the screen res is also much better than the EEE 701.
It's bigger than the 701, and smaller than the MSI Wind. I've never seen or used any of them, but it's bigger than the 900, which has the same keyboard as the 701, and the MSI Wind is a 10 inch laptop, so I would assume the keyboard would be bigger.
Well it has a better processor that is slower, but uses far less power, a bigger keyboard, and it is much less expensive. Downsides are it's hard to get your hands on now, it just went on sale today, and the only model for sale now has 512 MB RAM and 8GB flash.
The acer aspire one actually has a faster processor than the 900 or 701. The 901 has the same chip, but at a much greater cost than the one. The 1, MSi wind, and 901/1000 all use the intel atom at 1.6Mhz, while the 701/900 use the older slower, less reliable Celeron M based 800 Mhz processor
No, actually performance wise, the celeron processors in the 900 are FAR faster than the Atom chip. Even at such a lower speed rating, the processor is much faster, and is able to process more in less time, though it uses far more power as well. To be honest, the Atom chip is slow as hell, but for basic functions, it works, and it's slowness is not noticeable. Most laptop processors are roughly 10 times as fast. As far as reliability, I would vote for the Celeron, it's been tried and true.
No offense, I understand what you are trying to say. It was the same way with the G3/4/5 processors in the Mac's and the AMD chips to some degree today. From what understand the results have been opposite, but why would Asus dump the celeron then for there new line? The celeron is a celeron due to Intel refusing to pass it off as a pentium, I will never trust it. Atom still has a long way to go, but it's a good first step for intel to counter the Geode in the low end ultra low power market.
Sorry for the confusing posts :(, all I was trying to say is try both and see what you like. Kev has a good point, but I'd have to check his sources, but I'm pretty sure the Celeron consumes more power compared to the Atom. Just look at the Asus 900vs901. The Celeron is a low end chip. Atom is a new tech with draw backs. Both work fine for any netbook, but I'll stick with the Atom like every major company is in there newest entries... if you don't count HP, who uses Via and then installs Vista..
Sorry, I wasn't offended, just wanted to make sure everyone understood that the Atom chip is actually quite slow. That said, it's perfectly fine for Linpus or XP, just don't go trying to play Crysis on it :-)
Kev,I'm 100% with you. I bought the One at the beginning,it was too slow, even slower than my Eee PC 701. Late, I bought 900 with Mobile Processor. It is almost the same speed as the normal laptop. However, the battery run out quickly. I think Atom is desinged for netbook, that's why it is slower to save power. I also found some technical report with the same conclusion. I think both 2 machines have pros and cons. It depends on your choice. For me, I want 900. I will sell the one.
Kev, please don't mislead people. The Celeron 900 that is in the eee is far SLOWER than the 1.6ghz Atom. The reason for putting the celeron in the first eee is that it was cheaper and more available than the new and shiny Atom. Please read around before you say such big words.
the only bad thing about it, is that you cant put a permanent background! :(

or do you always have to use that mouse pad button?
i wish laptops just remove the mouse buttons and add in touch sensitive mouse section of the mouse pad to click...
immovable units = longer life span, don't you agree?
eliden 3 years ago
Yes you can double tap. The one I used for the video was a clunky pre-production model. The one I bought for myself afterwards happily double clicks.
Hear you about the mouse button. Didn't Apple just do that? Too many right-click legacies from the PC to undo?
